Swimming Upstream: “Before Satan Kissed Jesus, What Happened?”

And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, belonging to the number of the twelve. (Luke 22:3)

The battle in Gethsemane was set. On the one side was God who became flesh so that the works of the devil would be destroyed (1 John 3:8).

On the opposing side was Satan, working through a puppet named Judas. Backing Satan up was a Roman cohort (300 soldiers) armed with swords and spears, and an armed crowd of officers and slaves from the Temple.

Jesus’ motley crew included eleven sleepy men with two swords (Luke 22:38).

As Satan and his group approached Jesus, something happened:

So when Jesus said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. (John 18:6)

The last thing Satan ever wanted to do was bow down before Jesus, and yet, he was forced to do just that as he approached Him.

Yes, Satan via Judas got up and kissed Jesus. Yes, the disciples fled in fear. Yes, Jesus was tried, convicted and crucified. And yes, Jesus rose from the tomb and sits at the right hand of the Father in heaven.

But before all this good stuff happened, Satan bowed down before Jesus. And guess what? Satan still bows down today before Jesus.

It’s just that the person Jesus lives within us.

Swimming Upstream appears at this blog site on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It’s  a little of this and a little of that, all written  to encourage and exhort believers in their Christian jouneys.

I wish we would all ponder on the implications of your last statement everyday of our lives. It is so awesome to think that the Spirit of Jesus lives in us, but at the same time, it serves to accentuate how many of us live in defeat because deep down we don’t believe His spirit could possibly dwell in our hearts, souls, and spirit. If we did, what does most Western culture have to show for it, more to the point, why does Western church have the efforts and success of some men at the center instead of the power, redemption and salvation in Jesus Christ?

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement through your recent comments.

I agree with what you said in one of them, that the Spirit of Christ is indeed stirring something in some people’s hearts and that points to the fact that there is hope, there will always be hope. What we must not forget is that of the three: faith, hope and love, the greatest one is love and without it the other two don’t count for much.

    God bless you Larry.

  3. Good message, Larry. The truth is that God has a plan and it will be done. The sacrifice of Jesus finished the work and believers now have the power over all things that come against us! Nothing can defeat a child of God. But the sad part is that many Christians lead defeated lives because they listen to the lies of the enemy instead of their God who destroyed his power!

We need reminders so that when the devil uses his schemes, we can stand in the victory and keep our eyes on Christ who will work all things out for our good.

  4. Good post. I love thinking about the power that is within us. But I’m also reminded that we must die to self, and this power isn’t for our own purposes (better job, bigger house, etc.) but instead for accomplishing the will of the Father. Isn’t that what Jesus was always about, with death of His own self as the end result? What a great example we find in Christ.
