Baptism in the Holy Spirit: Déjà vu All Over Again

The Charismatic Revival of the 1960s and 70s had its beginning on Sunday, April 3, 1960, when Rector Dennis Bennett announced to his St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Van Nuys, California, about his being baptized in the Holy Spirit. Newsweek and Time magazines featured articles on Bennett’s experiences,

The resultant controversy and press coverage spread the Holy Spirit fire from the Episcopal Church to the Lutherans, Presbyterians, Catholics, Methodists and most other denominations.

The end result is that at its highpoint one-quarter of American Christians were tongue-talking, spiritual-gift using believers.

But sadly, the charismatic fires have been dying out over the last ten years, but I feel the Holy Spirit is about to change this:

Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away (apostasy) comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition. (2 Thessalonians 2:3 NKJ)

The Apostle Paul just echoed the words of Jesus when our Lord said – “many will fall away and will betray one another and will hate one another.”

Several years ago, I felt the Lord say to me: “If believers are not warned and prepared for the End-Times, 50 – 70% of American believers may fall away.”

Why so many?

Because the End-Times will be so tough and the deceit will be so mind-boggling for any American believers who are lukewarm and who live their spiritual lives under the influence of the Laodicean spirit, which is the prevalent spirit over most American churches right now.

Thus, because the Lord is gracious and merciful, I feel He will soon send a second Charismatic Revival to stir up us American Christians. There will be an extreme emphasis on talking in tongues, prophetic words, discernment and healing.

We absolutely need these gifts for the days ahead!

P.S. I believe whole churches who are a part of the Reform tradition will be changed in a blink of an eye by the Holy Spirit to tongue-talking, prophetic churches.

Does God Ever Let Us Down?

Another believer and I recently listened to the Christian song, King of My Heart. The words of the chorus – “You’re never going to let me down” – prompted a discussion between us.

“Those words aren’t always true,” said the believer.

“Really?” I said, not having a better answer at that moment.

“Those words certainly haven’t been true for me!”

Then, the believer proceeded to list various times how God had let the believer down. Most of these were financial disappointments with a couple of unexpected family deaths tossed into the mix. Our conversation died after a few minutes.

I returned to my work, but I spent the next few days meditating over the words of the song before I came up with a better answer.

So, does God ever let us down?

YES!

That is, God will always let us down if we view Him through our uncrucified American mindset which believes God is our Sugar Daddy in the sky who will keep us from any hardships or disappointments while we live here on earth.

Jesus warned us ahead of time about this when He said: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Brother Yun gives a pick-up-your-cross-daily point of view in his biography, The Heavenly Man:

Once I spoke in the West and a Christian told me, “I’ve been praying that the Communist government in China will collapse, so Christians can live in peace.”

“This is not what we pray!” said Brother Yun, a Chinese house church leader. “We never pray against our government or call down curses on them. Instead, we have learned that God is in control of both our lives and the government we live under. Isaiah prophesied about Jesus: ‘The government will be on His shoulders.’

“God has used China’s government for His own purposes, molding, and shaping His children as He sees fit. Instead of focusing our prayers against any political system, we pray that regardless of what happens to us, we will be pleasing to God.

“Don’t pray for the persecution to stop. We shouldn’t pray for a lighter load to carry, but a stronger back to endure. Then the world will see that God is with us, empowering us to live in a way that reflects His love and power.”

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. (Romans 8:28 AMP)

Once, we give our lives to the Lord, we become clay in the Potter’s hand. He uses every disappointment, affliction, persecution and whatever to mold and conform us into the image of His Son. The Father’s desire is that we might count everything else in our lives as rubbish when compared to knowing His Son.

So, does God ever let us down?

No!

None of us will stand before Jesus at the Judgment Seat of Christ and accuse our Father of letting us down. This won’t happen, but sadly, many of us may be shown how we have let the Father down.

My Irish Story

catholic-falls-road-belfast-northern-ireland-antrim-county-january-area-murals-have-become-65750008

My roommate Tony and I enjoyed laughing in the midst of our financial struggles. I remember walking to Hy-Vee Grocery Store one morning and seeing a dead pheasant lying next to the road.

“Hey, we might be able to make a stew out of that bird,” said Tony.

“Really?”

“Actually, I’m trying to make up my mind whether I’m that desperate yet.”

Humor helps during bad times, but we were also serious prayer warriors, who believed God could use us to advance His kingdom. Each morning, we waited on the Lord to discover how He wanted us to pray.

Once, we felt He wanted us to pray for Northern Ireland and its violent unrest at the time. We began praying in tongues, waiting on the Holy Spirit to show us a clear direction on how to intercede for the war-torn area. I then had a vision in which I saw bodies of young people piled in heaps on the streets of Belfast, thousands of them. All had their lives snuffed out by the continued violence between the Catholics and Protestants.

The vision so disturbed me I could do nothing but weep. Tony and I eventually prayed as best we could to stop this vision from happening in Ireland, but we had no peace about it. I also felt there was an important prophetic word for Northern Ireland within my spirit, waiting to be given.

I went to my bedroom afterward and prayed, asking the Lord to give the prophecy to some well-known preacher. Who would listen to me? As soon as I prayed the words, I knew it was a bad idea so I repented quickly.

“Lord, show me how to speak the prophecy to Northern Ireland,”  I prayed. With those words, peace settled over me.

The Lord impressed me to visit a Catholic church near the campus two days later. I walked in the door and asked if anybody knew someone in Northern Ireland. They all laughed, but one lady suggested I should talk with a secretary in the basement.

I went to the secretary. She did not know anyone in Ireland, but she knew the name of the Catholic Charismatic leader in Des Moines.

“Maybe that person knows someone in Ireland,” she said.

The next day, I phoned the Catholic Charismatic leader.

“I don’t know anyone in Ireland,” she said, “but my husband knows the head of the Catholic Charismatic movement in England.”

Her husband came on the line and gave me the phone number.

I phoned the number in England early the next morning because of the six-hour time difference. The leader’s wife answered and told me her husband was attending a meeting in London. I explained to her the reason for my phone call.

“Funny,” she said, “but I’m looking at the exact person you need. His picture is on the cover of a book.”

She gave me the information.

I sat down at the kitchen table and wrote the prophetic word for Northern Ireland, and then mailed it to the leader in Belfast.

This whole experience was by faith and after dropping the letter into the mailbox, all of my faith dried up. Every doubt in the world hit me. Who did I think I was anyway? A nobody. A failure. I didn’t even belong to a church. No pastor would ever vouch for me. The Irish leader would take one look at my name, my handwritten scrawl, and laugh. But even in the midst of these doubts, I knew enough to run to the throne of grace, asking for grace and mercy to help me through this trial of faith.

Two weeks later, the phone rang on a Sunday afternoon.

“Hello,” I answered.

“Larry, I’m Cecil Kerr from Belfast, Ireland. I’m calling to thank you for the prophetic word you sent me. Our prayer group had been waiting for just such a word. We are already praying it into fruition. So, from all of us, we thank you for your obedience to the Holy Spirit.”

We talked for a few minutes and then said our goodbyes. I fell on my knees and wept, realizing how big God is and, by comparison, how little I am. To think God would use me, to pray for such a far off place, which was going through such desperate  life and death struggles, opened my eyes to the greatness of our God. Nothing is impossible for Him.

If there had been a contest for the two most insignificant Christians in America at the time, Tony and I had a chance of winning. My truck had been repossessed. Tony’s car needed a tire. We had no money and AT&T disconnected our phone the very next morning.

God never seems to be bothered by such trivial things as our insignificance in the world.

The above took place in 1995. The peace treaty between the IRA and Great Britain was finally signed on Good Friday, 1998, and continues today.

Tuesday’s Prayers for Prisoners (10/4/2016)

How many men had young David faced in battle before he faced Goliath? Not one.

Yet, he was not overwhelmed by the enormous odds facing him on that day. He knew God was for him and figured it didn’t matter who confronted him because his God was more than enough to win the battle.

My prayer today:

Lord, raise up young Davids in Asia who do not look at the Goliaths of poverty, communism, Buddhism, Islam, paganism, atheism, and whatever, but who only look to You, the Lord of hosts, and know the battle is Yours and You will give them victory. (Based on 1 Samuel 17:45-47)

Join with me on Tuesdays to fast and pray for  prisoners in Asia, according to Hebrews 13:3.

Why Asia?

1. 4.4 billion people live in Asia.

2.. 85.4% of world’s unevangelized people live in Asia. (Unevangelized means they may have heard the gospel but have no understanding on how to respond.)

3. The world’s three largest non-Christian religions – Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhists – are based in Asia.

4. Of the 37 countries of the world that are less than 10% Christian, 32 are in Asia. Of the 14 countries, that are less than 2% Christian, 12 are in Asia.

5. 600 million people live in abject poverty in the slums of Asia.

6. 85-90% of unreached people live in Asia. (Unreached means that they have never heard the name of Jesus.) (Operation World: The Definitive Prayer Guide to Every Nation)

Tuesday’s Prayers for Prisoners (2/2/2016)

The above little boy hopes for something better by crossing his fingers. Yet, his future will remain bleak and hopeless unless someone proclaims the Gospel of the Kingdom of God to him.

…For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that He might destroy the works of the devil. (1 John 3:8)

But with 4.4 billion people and 85.4% of the world’s unevangelized people living in Asia, where will the laborers come from?

My prayer today:

Lord, the harvest is truly great, so I ask You, the Lord of the Harvest, to send out more laborers into the harvest fields of Asia. Bring the laborers from the north, south, east, and west. Call them out of the universities, colleges, tech industries, medical careers, and wherever into their divine destinies as laborers for You in Asia. (Based on Luke 10:2)

Join with me on Tuesdays to fast and pray for prisoners in Asia, according to Hebrews 13:3.

Lord, Help Me Love Democrats (Conclusion)

dolly 6

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” (Edmund Burke, 1729-1797)

Don’t you agree that the desperate times we now face as a nation demand a radical turning away from the things of the world so that we can focus ourselves on the mercy of the Father?

But what if our radical turning away is labeled extremism and unpatriotic by Christian leaders and other believers? Then what? Will we cave in to the pressure and follow the same-o, same-o path that we American Christians have trudged upon for forty years? A path that has continually failed to produce any fruit for our efforts.

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. (Colossians 2:8)

I believe the Rev. Jerry Falwell, the Moral Majority, Christian Coalition, other Christian conservative political groups, Christian leaders, and fellow believers that have embraced the American political system as a way to remove abortion and other sinful practices from our nation have been sincere in their faith, but also deceived.

We have ended up following human traditions and the elemental spirits of the world and not Jesus Christ.

I believe our only hope at this late hour in history is to turn ourselves one hundred and eighty degrees from our present direction, like Ninevah did at the words of Jonah. But even with this, there is no guarantee that America will be spared any of God’s upcoming judgments. Yet, we can at least have the same faith as the king of Ninevah.

“Who knows? God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.” (Jonah 3:9)

I believe we Christians need to:

  1. Fast and pray one day per week for our nation,
  2. Stay away from political arguments, which cause strife and division,
  3. And if the Lord speaks to our hearts, drop out of the political system altogether and not vote in the 2016 November elections.

What if every Christian in America listened to my words and followed them? Wouldn’t the bad guys take over America?

It is my sincere belief we would have a church filled with peacemakers who could minister to those embittered and disillusioned by the failures of our political system. And guess what? We shall be known as sons of God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. (Matthew 5:9)

Taco Tuesday Special! Free e-Book on Amazon.

Whats In It F Me1

If you have a Kindle,  Kindle Fire, iPad, Nexus, Galaxy, or any computer with Kindle apps on it, my e-book, What’s In It For Me? is free on March 26 and March 27 through Amazon.

Amazon Book Description:

Every decision we make in life, we ask ourselves: “What’s in it for me?”

Admittedly, we Christians hate conceding this question sprints across our cranial synapses before we make spiritual decisions, but it always does. For more mature believers, the answers arrive in nanoseconds. Younger Christians may struggle and wrestle within themselves for a longer period of time before making their decisions.

But the result is always the same: the what’s-in it-for me-question is answered before decisions are made.

For example, who would ever give his life to the Lord? Or who would travel as a missionary to a distant land? Or who would willingly become a martyr? No one would do these things unless the Lord offered us something better in return for our decisions.

Okay, what about giving hard earned money to poor Asians? What’s in it for me?

Two thirds of the world’s population lives in Asia, with China and India accounting for approximately 60% of the total population. Less than 5% of Asians know the Lord and many have never even heard of Jesus. Thousands of Christians are imprisoned for their faith in China, North Korea, Vietnam, and Laos. Other believers are harassed and murdered. Millions now face starvation with no hope in sight and gendercide is being carried out against females in China and India.

So what’s in it for me?

What’s In It For Me? reveals how helping the least, the Asians,  may be the perfect insurance policies for our futures here on earth, especially those of us who live on the West Coast.

I believe this may be one of the most important books any believer will ever read.

Where’s Mom and Dad?

Although only five years old, I remember that particular September day.

It was the weekend of the Ogle County Fair which meant jumping in our 1951 Ford with my family and driving to the fairgrounds. Upon arrival, my sister went with her cousin to check out the fair. I stayed with mom and dad.

My parents first treated me to a hot dog and Nehi Cream Soda. Afterward, we walked around looking at farm exhibits.

Dad was interested in a tractor at one tent and talked to a lively salesman. Mom listened to the haggling and laughed at the two men. I stood there for a few moments, but the sounds of the fair tugged on my ears.

“Step right up and win yourself a teddy bear.”

“Get your ticket now for the tilt-a-whirl.”

“Hurry, hurry! Right this way!”

Without a word, I turned and followed the sounds. The crowd swept me along in its current to the carnival games and rides. Everything seemed so alive until a revelation dawned upon me: where’s Mom and Dad?

I backtracked to the tractor exhibit, but they were gone. I searched here, there, and everywhere. No parents. Finally, I stopped by a tree and cried. The thoughts of never seeing my parents again and wondering what would happen to me bombarded my mind.

Then, I heard a voice.

“Sonny, I’m here,” said Dad, leaning over to give me a hug.

My life began again at that moment.

This experience occurred years ago and lasted twenty or so minutes, but do you know in India there are 11 million abandoned children whose experiences never end? Little ones left to fend for themselves by poor parents who can no longer afford to care for them. 90% of these abandoned children are little girls.

Three million of these children end up living on the streets. A million or so of the little girls will end up in the sex trade with a life expectancy of 15 years of age.

What can we do?

Gospel For Asia’s Bridge of Hope offers us an opportunity to sponsor children, with 100% of our financial offerings going directly to help the children.

Like my dad on that day long ago, we can be a loving voice to these children which says, “I’m here.”

Where's the 23008

If you have a Kindle, Kindle Fire, iPad, Nexus, Galaxy, or any computer with Kindle apps on it, my e-book, Where’s the Kingdom of God, is free on February 19 and February 20 through Amazon.

Amazon Book Description:

What was the message Jesus commanded His disciples to preach?

If your answer is the “gospel,” then you are almost correct, but you have omitted three important words.

“This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14)

Jesus spoke about being “born again” one time. He barely mentioned the “church,” said nothing about the “Bride of Christ,” and talked little about “saving sinners.” His primary message was proclaiming the good news about the kingdom of God.

Yet, most of us understand little about the kingdom of God or its benefits for each of us.

Where’s the Kingdom of God? is written in an easy to read style which will give you an understanding of the most important kingdom in the world. The seventy-two footnotes will encourage you to dig deeper in your own study time.

So, if you are like me and are dissatisfied with our governments and social systems, then you need to read this book. It will offer hope in the one government and kingdom which will never let us down: the Kingdom of God.

If you have a Kindle, Kindle Fire, iPad, Nexus, Galaxy, a computer, or smart phone with Kindle apps on it, my e-book novel, Planning + Preparation = Survival, is FREE January 29 – 30, through Amazon.

Amazon Book Description:

What is the #1 statement spoken by individuals during large catastrophes?

“I didn’t think this would ever happen to me.”

Why?

They believed catastrophes always happened to someone else, but never to them. And if it did happen, they thought the government would arrive on the scene and rescue them before their cups of coffee turned cold.

If this is your present thinking, then allow me to say one word to smash your ideas to smithereens: Katrina. Yes, Hurricane Katrina, the watershed event when all of us should have learned to never again place our faith in governments to rescue us or our families from catastrophes.

Planning + Preparation = Survival is a no-nonsense book written to show Christians how to pray, plan, and prepare ourselves, our families, and our communities for possible natural and terrorist catastrophes in the near future.
