Judging Prophecies (Part 2)

Carol and I had steadily moved east, via UHaul Rental Truck, for nearly five years. Planting roots, meeting neighbors and never hearing the sound of a moving truck backing up to our door was now our main goal in life. Our rental home provided us with the perfect opportunity to accomplish all of this. It was a single story, three-bedroom home with plenty of space for us to settle down and enjoy ourselves.

Everything seemed perfect until Carol arrived home from work one evening.

“My sales position at the Virginia Beach Thomasville Store stinks,” she said, slamming her purse down on the table.

“Why?”

“The manager changed the commission schedule which we agreed upon when he hired me. This is not going to work for us. We need to hear from the Lord.”

The next morning, we sat in the family room, praying and seeking the Lord about the latest turn of events. We prayed in tongues and then waited to see if the Lord would speak to one of us.

“This is what I believe is going to happen,” I said, looking at her.

“What?” she said, glancing up from her Bible.

“A man is going to walk into the Thomasville Store and offer you a job. You need to accept it because the job offer is from the Lord.”

“No one knows me in Virginia Beach. How is this going to happen? Maybe we should pray a little longer.”

I laughed, knowing my wife was not an easy-peasy pushover when it came to prophetic words, especially an over-the-top one like this one.

“Let’s wait and see,” I said, standing up to search of coffee.

A sales recruiter from Haynes Furniture walked into the Virginia Beach Thomasville Store two days later. He talked with Carol for a few minutes and offered her a commission sales position at Haynes with three months guaranteed salary. Carol accepted the job.

Now, for a hypothetical possibility:

Let’s say that a man ran into your office on 911 and said, “I just had a vision of a plane flying into this building. Everyone here needs to stand up from their desk and run down those stairs as fast as you can go. This building will soon be on fire. Don’t think! Just go, now!”

(Just so you know: a few people did not show up for work at the towers on 911 because they felt the Holy Spirit wanted them to stay home. They didn’t know why, but they soon learned the answer.)

Sometimes, we judge a prophecy by waiting and seeing what happens and sometimes, we judge a prophecy by acting on it right away.

How do we know what to do?
