Tuesday’s Prayers for Prisoners (4/7/2015)

Each Tuesday, I pray and fast for the nations of Asia, where 4.4 billion people live.

Why Asia?

1. 85.4% of world’s unevangelized people live in Asia. (Unevangelized means they may have heard the gospel but have no understanding on how to respond.)

2. The world’s three largest non-Christian religions – Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhists – are based in Asia.

3. Of the 37 countries of the world that are less than 10% Christian, 32 are in Asia. Of the 14 countries, that are less than 2% Christian, 12 are in Asia.

4. 85-90% of unreached people live in Asia. (Unreached means that they have never heard the name of Jesus.) (Operation World: The Definitive Prayer Guide to Every Nation)

After spending seven years in India and praying 5 to 10 hours per day with long periods of fasting, Praying John Hyde (1865 – 1912), had just one convert to show for his efforts.

Choi Ja-Shil (David Yonggi Cho’s mother-in-law) prayed tens hours each night for ten years and fasted for days and days, but had few results for her time spent crying out to the Lord for South Korea.

These are two examples of the dedication that is required to make inroads into Asian nations, where Buddhist, Hindu, Islam, or other religions have been around for thousands of years.

Today, I prayed:

Lord, I pray for the believers in India, North Korea, and the rest of Asia to be encouraged and that they don’t grow weary in doing good, knowing they will reap a harvest of blessings if they do not give up. (Based on Galatians 6:9)

Tuesday’s Prayers for Prisoners (3/31/2015)

Each Tuesday, I pray and fast for the nations of Asia, where 4.4 billion people live.

Why Asia?

The problems in India, Philippines, and all of Asia are overwhelming. Poverty, illiteracy, thousands of years of traditions, and so forth seem like too big a chasm to cross. At best, our efforts end up being what Mother Teresa described as “drops in the ocean.”

But yet, Mother Teresa added, “The ocean would be less because of our missing drops.”

Today, I prayed:

Lord, I pray that You open the ears of thousands of Americans to the cries of Asia so that our hearts are broken enough to pray and believe for You to save all of Asia.

Got Clean Water?

World Water day is tomorrow: March 22nd.

So, did you know that millions in South Asia are without clean water?

• 3.4 million people die each year from water-related diseases.

• Diarrhea is the second leading cause of death among children under five years of age in the world. The total number of deaths from diarrhea are more than malaria, AIDS, and measles combined.

Tuesday’s Prayers for Prisoners (3/17/2015)

Each Tuesday, I pray and fast for the nations of Asia, where 4.4 billion people live.

Why Asia?

My prayer emphasis was on the leaders of India and North Korea.

India is the second most populated nation in the world with 1.2 billion people and is the largest democracy in the world. North Korea has 24.9 million people and is a single-party Socialist republic. Both nations have corrupt governments where bribes and influence peddling are common practices.

India is ranked 85th on the Transparency Index out of 175 nations as compared to its neighbors Bhutan (30th), Bangladesh (145th), Myanmar (156th), China (100th), Nepal (126th), Pakistan (126th) and Sri Lanka (85th).

North Korea is tied with Somalia at 174th.

Just for your own information: USA is ranked 17th, tied with Ireland, Hong Kong, and Barbados.

Today, I prayed:

Lord, I pray for the political leaders and those in high government positions in India and North Korea to be saved and come to the knowledge of the Truth so that the people in these two nations may lead peaceful and quiet lives. (Based on 1 Timothy 2:1-4)

What If We Ate A Few Less Cookies This Year?

It’s one of those chilly evenings in February. You are watching television when the doorbell rings. You hit pause on the remote and walk to the front door, expecting to see the neighbor’s daughter selling Girl Scout Cookies. But instead of a girl pulling a red wagon filled with overpriced cookies, you are confronted by eleven million abandoned Indian children. Each child has a hand out, begging for help. Each looks desperate and malnourished. You blink your eyes and hope the nightmare scene in front of you will change.

I know. I know. This is unrealistic and will never happen on our front porches.

Yet, the fact remains that there are eleven million abandoned children between the ages of 4 years and eleven years of age on the streets of India. Most are abandoned by parents who can’t afford to feed them. These children don’t have the option of blinking their eyes and hoping their nightmares will end because they won’t…unless we decide to help them.

How can we help?

By sponsoring a child through Gospel For Asia’s Bridge of Hope program for only $30 per month. Gospel For Asia has helped 72,000 children so far and hopes to sponsor 500,000 children in the near future.

Maybe we could eat a few less cookies this year and help Gospel For Asia reach its goal one child sooner.

Tuesday’s Prayers for Prisoners (2/17/2015)

Each Tuesday I pray and fast for nations where Christians suffer the worst persecution around the world. This week I am praying and fasting for:

India. 1.3 billion people with 59 million Christians.

The oppressive caste system is blocking social mobility. Economic wealth is unevenly distributed. A new Hindu government (in power since May 2014 and led by Hindu hardliner Narendra Modi) is radicalizing society. All traditions of Christianity are affected by persecution in India, but Christian converts from a Hindu background and non-traditional Protestant groups are suffering most. At the top level the influence of fundamentalist Hindus has increased. Hindu radicals have started monitoring Christian activity in much detail. Many of them have planted spies in churches. Reports on pastors and church members beaten because of allegations of conversion are frequent; sometimes Christians are even killed. (World Watch List)

Prayer Points for India:

For Christian converts to stand strong against those who are trying to force a return to Hinduism
That hatred against Christians instigated by radical political parties may end
That the new government of Narendra Modi will give Christians the freedom to express their faith without violence in every part of India.

India is the world’s largest democracy and the second most populous country, behind China. It is a highly diverse country, with a multitude of languages, cultures and religions. The social and political structures in India are largely determined by religion, caste and language. Despite India’s increasing presence in the global economy, the vast majority of the rural population remains impoverished. India is the birthplace of Hinduism and has the second largest Muslim population in the world, after Indonesia, with at least 14 percent of its 1.2 billion people claiming that affiliation…(The Voice of the Martyrs)

The lyrics for the song, I Have Decided to Follow Jesus, are based on the last words by an Indian man who along with his family converted to Christianity. His children, his wife, and he were executed for refusing to renounce their beliefs in Jesus. Lord, I pray for all of the believers in India who have decided to follow You, although they may wonder about their beliefs from time to time and may not have anyone to walk with them, I pray they will never turn back from following You. Who Will Tell Her?

How will the women in India call on the Lord in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard His name? And how are they to hear His name without someone preaching to them? And how can the ministers preach to the women unless they have been sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news to the women of India and South Asia!” (Based on Romans 10:14-15)

The greatest challenge for a woman in Asia today is to simply survive a normal lifespan. From birth — and even before birth — to death, a burden of oppression follows her through all the stages of her life, threatening her very existence.

Asian Women Face Unimaginable Challenges & Degradation.

Young girls throughout Asia are ravenously abducted and forced into a life of prostitution with every agonizing day one step closer to an early death from AIDS.
Widows in India bear the blame for their husbands’ deaths. They’re shunned by their communities, rejected by their families and forced into an inhumane lifestyle. Tens of thousands take their own lives just to end the pain.
Every year in India, more than 7,000 women are doused with kerosene and burned to death—by their husbands. The wife’s crime: an insufficient dowry.

It is no surprise that the suicide rate among women in India is up to 21 times higher than the world’s average.

These are but a few of the tragic conditions faced by millions of Asian women. They are trapped in a never-ending cycle of misery. Utterly without hope.

Yet today, in the midst of a hopeless situation, there is glorious hope.

Through the heroic efforts of 2,000 women missionaries who have dedicated their lives to bringing God’s love to the women of Asia, we can reach them. In many Asian cultures, genders rarely mix, so traditional male missionaries are severely limited in ministering to women. However, it is possible to send trained, dedicated women missionaries to reach the millions who still wait to hear that they are precious to Jesus.

After three years of intense training, GFA-supported women missionaries are driven by a passion: to relieve the pain and suffering of women in Asia by introducing them to the love of the Lord Jesus Christ. They heroically risk persecution, beatings and imprisonment to tell hurting women about a Savior who offers hope for eternity, and strength for today.

The lives of hundreds of thousands of Asian women are being transformed by GFA’s dedicated women missionaries, but millions more still wait.

Tuesday’s Prayers for Prisoners (2/3/2015)

Each Tuesday I pray and fast for nations where Christians suffer the worst persecution around the world. This week I am praying and fasting for:

Kenya. 46.7 million people with 34 million Christians.

Homegrown radical Muslims and militants crossing the border from Somalia are severely persecuting Christians. The government’s approach to pushing for an unbalanced secularist agenda also has an impact on the Kenyan church, as some of the agenda being pushed by the government contradicts with the values and principles of Christianity. Violence has increased in different parts of the country particularly where Islamic radicalism is high. The future of Kenyan Christians will continue deteriorating as long as the underlying issues are not properly and adequately tackled. The future of the Kenyan church appears precarious. The government’s stance towards religious institutions is becoming less and less positive and the church faces intensifying levels of persecution, especially from the militant group al-Shabaab. (World Watch List)

Pressing challenges for Kenya include high unemployment and poverty. Most Kenyans live below the poverty level of $1 a day. The country is also experiencing increased drug trafficking, expanding urban slums and growing populations of street children and AIDS orphans. Despite a declining infection rate, 500 people still die of AIDS every day in the country. Kenyans, by law, have freedom of religion. Nearly 50 percent identify themselves as evangelical Christians, up from 17 percent in 1960. The coast and northwest areas of the country have traditionally been Muslim, and Muslims are attempting to Islamize those regions and establish Shariah law. Muslims try to convert non-Muslims through financial inducements and violence. Converts from Islam to Christianity are subject to harassment, persecution and violence. Somali Islamic militants have committed acts of violence within Kenya’s borders at an increasing rate. Terrorists have attacked several churches in Kenya and have killed pastors and other Christians, including children. (Voice of Martyrs)

Prayer Points:

That growing persecution and violence toward Christians by al-Shabaab will decrease in 2015

That God would enable Christian leaders to reach out to those in the Muslim community

For peace and comfort for the families of Christians who were killed in 2014, including 36 quarry workers murdered in December outside the city of Mandera

Today, I prayed:

Lord, I pray for Kenyan Christians to not be slothful in zeal, fervent in spirit, serving You, and that they rejoice in hope, are patient in tribulation, and constant in prayer. I also pray that they bless those who persecute them and are not overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Based on Romans 12: 11, 12, 14, and 21.)

Friday’s Prayers for Prisoners (1/30/2015)

Each Friday I pray and fast for nations where Christians suffer the worst persecution around the world. This week I am praying and fasting for:

Qatar. 2.3 million people with 90,000 Christians.

Christian converts from a Muslim background and Christian migrant workers continue to be pressured. The state religion is strictly conservative Wahhabi Islam. While Muslims are free to worship in public, non-Muslim religious groups are restricted to private houses or designated places. Proselytizing is outlawed and those who criticize Islam are punished. Conversion from Islam to another religion constitutes apostasy, an offense which carries capital punishment. Qatar is one of the largest financial supporters of Islamic terrorism; it reportedly supports Islamic rebels in war zones. (World Watch List)

Expatriate believers are allowed to practice their faith openly, but Qatari Christians risk arrest or worse. Government policy strictly limits Christian gatherings. Proselytism of Muslims is forbidden, and merely causing a Qatari to doubt his or her faith is punishable by several years’ imprisonment. Expatriates have been expelled for evangelizing Qataris. Christians are treated as second-class citizens. Criticism of the Muslim faith or the ruling family is a crime. There were no known Qatari believers before 1985, but several have come to the Lord outside the country since then. Up until 2008, there were no churches for foreigners. Eight Christian denominations, which have more than 1,500 members living in the country, have been legally recognized and built or have been allotted land to build a church in the Mesaymir Religious Complex, widely known as “Church City.” Foreigners from smaller congregations may still worship privately, and all foreign churches are forbidden from advertising services or displaying religious symbols on their buildings. Lord, I pray that You send a new group of believers to Qatar who will turn the world upside down in that nation. (Based on Acts 17:6)

When Was The Last Time…

I watched the above video nine days ago, but I have been sick with a vicious cold since then. Yet, even when I tossed and turned with fever, I meditated on this video, especially these words:

We will live as strangers and pilgrims on this earth, with sacrifice, and commitment, and tears, and fasting, and touch the lost world with our lifestyle and commitment. (K. P. Yohannan of Gospel For Asia)

Now, I understand that not everyone will be touched by Yohannan’s words, like I was, but that’s only natural. A friend used to say, “If you throw a stone into a pack of wild dogs, the only dog that really pays attention is the one the stone hits. He yelps.”

Yohannan’s stone hit me. I yelped!

What do I plan on doing?

I am going to find as many people as possible who want to live as strangers and pilgrims on this earth. I don’t care if they are white, black, brown, Catholics, Lutherans, Charismatics, Baptists, tongue talkers, or whatever. I want to be with them to fast, pray, weep, and give so that a lost world can be touched by our lifestyle and commitment.

You see, at 69 years of age, I’ve run out of time and excuses.
