Tuesday’s Prayers for Prisoners (7/14/2015)

http://www.markpedder.wordpress.com

If you watch the above video which shows the Don Bosco slum in Manila, you’ll soon learn that not every prison is made of steel bars and jail cells. Some are built out of poverty and garbage.

Without ever hearing about the King and His kingdom, these slum dwellers will live their whole lives as prisoners to poverty and the kingdom of darkness. Then, they will die and – most likely – go to Hell.

Do we even care?

Today, I prayed:

Lord, destroy my apathy and help me to share freely and give generously to the poor. (Based on 2 Corinthians 9:9)

Join with me on Tuesdays to fast and pray for prisoners in Asia, according to Hebrews 13:3.

Why Asia?

1. 4.4 billion people live in Asia.

2.. 85.4% of world’s unevangelized people live in Asia. (Unevangelized means they may have heard the gospel but have no understanding on how to respond.)

3. The world’s three largest non-Christian religions – Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhists – are based in Asia.

4. Of the 37 countries of the world that are less than 10% Christian, 32 are in Asia. Of the 14 countries, that are less than 2% Christian, 12 are in Asia.

5. 85-90% of unreached people live in Asia. (Unreached means that they have never heard the name of Jesus.) (Operation World: The Definitive Prayer Guide to Every Nation)

Do We Still Cast Out Demons? (Part 5)

dolly sad

John the Baptist languished in prison and his spirit was at its lowest ebb. He sent two of his disciples to Jesus to inquire if Jesus was truly the Christ. Jesus answered by saying:

Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them. (Luke 7:22)

Jesus did not give a four-point sermon on why He was the Christ, but instead, He pointed to His acts, demonstrating that the kingdom of God had arrived on earth. He was the King of Kings and the Head of the kingdom of God on earth.

The two disciples of John the Baptist were satisfied with Jesus’ answer and departed.

Jesus then spoke about John the Baptist and his ministry. He stated that John was the messenger who prepared the way for Jesus and He added:

“For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist…” (Luke 7:28-a)

You have to remember that Abraham, Moses, David, Elijah, Elisha, Daniel, and all of the prophets were revered by the Jews. Thus, when Jesus ranked John the Baptist at the top of the list, His words flabbergasted and astounded every listener.

Yet, the second part of Jesus statement was even more amazing –

“…but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than John.” (Luke 7:28-b)

When Jesus stated that the lowest member of the kingdom of God – the one who got in by the skin of his teeth – was greater than John, Jesus was not referring to a person’s eternal rank or position. This could not be the case because all of the Old Covenant’s prophets’ positions for all of eternity were already set in place by God’s word. No one can ever usurp their positions in the kingdom of God.

So, what was Jesus referring to when He spoke Luke 7:28-b?

Inside Israel

The Shuk in Jerusalem

The Shuk in Jerusalem

Once again, it’s time to hear from our sister in Jerusalem about what she is witnessing there as a believer in Yeshua. Put your prayer shawls on and pray for Israel and Sister J. Now here she is …

Greetings dear brothers and sisters,

May each of you be finding His joy and His peace in the midst of whatever you are walking through.  (Thinking of the scripture to “Count it all joy…”) May The Lord be blessed and glorified in and through you, and may you be blessed and encouraged today.

I was hoping to write sooner then this concerning a Holocaust survivor named Ruth who is in her 90s.  I wrote to you a number of years ago about a unique problem that some here. I first ran across it when it so suddenly afflicted another of our survivor patients.  It seems that there is a syndrome among this dear group.

So many of them who survived such terrible things during the World War II were able to make their way to Israel afterward and amazingly begin new and very productive lives.  So many who had lost everyone married, started families, and went on to leave a legacy that is a true wonder.  But a hidden horror lurked unknown inside them until they began to reach an advanced age. Many of them who seemed to be fine and had much to show for their productive lives, very suddenly were plunged back into the horrors that lived in the recesses of their minds.

I once wrote to you about this when Kala came to the Doctor’s office looking unusually tired and stressed.  When I asked her what was wrong, she said, “All of Noah’s family visited me all night…his parents, aunts and uncles, children…”

But you see, they had all been slain in the Holocaust camps.  I was horrified as I watched this lovely, well-respected dentist retreat into a closet of horrors.  That was when I found out more about the nature of the Holocaust. Some horrors results lie dormant for a lifetime.

Now Ruth is suffering and I ask for prayer for her. Her story is different.

Whereas Kala and Noah believed in God, I have actually asked for prayer for her husband, Ya’akov.  He is the survivor who is so bitter toward God and claims, not to be an atheist, but to be a “hater of God” and a mocker as well. “Where was HE during the holocaust?” he spit at me.

Yet I hear his crying heart. I do not know the ways of God well enough to say more, but I do know HIM well enough to know that He is big and merciful enough to do more then I could imagine.

Ya’akov’s wife Ruth has been special to me over the years.  There was just something about her. When we went through our breast cancers together (even meeting at the hospital), I was able to encourage her and was endeared to her.

She has recently become severely clinically depressed. I did my best to reach out to her but did not realize that she is also suffering from the “Holocaust syndrome.”

On Friday, I asked about her and Ya’akov told me that she is just inconsolable.  “She tells him again and again ‘I am ALONE!  I have NO one!  They are all murdered!” he said. “And she also visits with them all night.”

Ya’akov tells her, “Ruth!  You have me!  You have the children and grandchildren. WE ARE YOUR FAMILY.”

But she just weeps and says, “No, you are not my REAL family!” And that breaks his heart as well.  He is 94.

I did not know their story as well as others (because of his bitterness) but he told me a few things. When she was young, she was on a train with her entire family, heading to the gas chambers.  As the train rounded a corner at high speed, she alone jumped out, surviving somehow. The rest of her family perished. Eventually she was taken in by a Polish Christian family who then cared for her. Undoubtedly she has heard of Him.  I would like to send her a copy of the Gospel of John in Hebrew.  Will you pray that this is done and received as well?  How deeply she needs His Love and healing and freedom and PEACE!

People seem more edgy again as we come down to the last 10 days of Ramadan.  Perhaps you heard of the major Islamic state attack in Sinai, the area relinquished to Egypt when the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt was signed.  The area is a hotbed of terrorism and extremism and now ISIS is working at staking a claim there, just as it has been doing on our northern border and in Gaza.  At the beginning of Ramadan there was a spate of 6 terror attacks, two resulting in Israeli deaths, and although that appears to have quieted down, people are alert.  Particularly since our schools are now out for summer vacation and our children are longing for fun.

This morning I heard a HUGE ruckus outside. The air was FILLED with the voices of children.  I went to the merepeset (balcony) and looked over at perhaps 150 or more little ones, probably 6 and 7 year olds. They skipped along behind leaders, and followed by security guards there to protect them.  They look so bright and sweet, all in little hats and backpacks with water bottles. The girls all pinky and the boys all…well…boys.

The “day-camp” program here is very different then it was back in the states.  Called khoog (the “kh” is like the sound you would make when you say an “h” and clear your throat at the same time.  It used to be represented by “ch” but is too easily confused with the “ch” combination in English).

These programs are often subsidized and can be really wonderful.  They are very creative and active and it was so much fun to see this gaggle of little ones bursting with joy, expecting to have fun.  It was a great opportunity to pray for them, an illustrated prayer request of sorts.

I had more to share but my husband has just called and said that he would be coming home early.  He is a barber/hairdresser and we have just entered the 3 weeks of mourning leading up to tisha b’av’ (the 9th of the month of Av on the Hebrew calendar). These are the days on which both the first and second temples were destroyed and many catastrophic events befell the tribes of Israel, both historically and in modern times.  It is the custom of some not to have their hair cut during this period. Thus, I will go and prepare for my husband’s earlier then usual arrival.

God bless you. Thank you for prayers. May His body continue to be built into His temple and may He be glorified.

Lovingly,

your sis J

Was That the Voice of God or Daffy Duck? (Part 4)

IMG_4287

Tina lined up the white cue ball with the black eight ball for a corner pocket. It was a straight on, can’t miss shot, with the game riding on the outcome. She slowly drew the pool cue back and then pushed it forward, striking the cue ball. It rolled across the green cloth, hitting the eight ball with topspin, sending both balls into the side pocket. She scratched, which meant she lost the game of spots and stripes to me.

“You’re so lucky,” Tina said, tossing her head back. “I hate making mistakes.”

I laughed, knowing luck played a major part in my victory because she was a more skillful player than me. The only reason I even played was to celebrate her nineteenth birthday after our lunch together.

“Well,” I said, “you had better get used to making mistakes if you’re going to walk in your calling and prophesy.”

Her blue eyes narrowed.

“No, I don’t have to make any mistakes.”

“Oh for sure,” I replied with a grin.

“No, I don’t have to make any mistakes. All I have to do is study the Bible, pray, and obey the Holy Spirit. If I do that, I can prophesy without ever making any mistakes. I know I can!”

I laughed and she slapped me on the shoulder. We returned our pool cues to the rack and left the Iowa State University Student Union’s poolroom. (Excerpt from The Hunt for Larry Who by Larry Nevenhoven, an Amazon eBook.)

Another big hindrance to hearing the voice of God is fear.

What if we make mistakes? What if we listen to the wrong voice? What if we end up following a cult? What if? What if?

Fear paralyzes Christians. It forces us to make the biggest mistake of all, which is doing nothing.

Such love [agape] has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced His perfect love. (1 John 4:18 NLT)

What are some other problems for hearing the voice of God for ourselves?

Thursday’s Prayers for America (7/9/2015)

dolly 13

In 853 B.C., Israel’s King Ahab and Judah’s King Jehoshaphat were working out a military alliance to fight Syria. Jehoshaphat agreed to Ahab’s terms, but also said —

“But first let’s find out what the LORD says.” (1 Kings 22:5)

King Ahab brought out four hundred prophets and asked them whether Israel should go to war against Syria or refrain from doing so. All of the prophets proclaimed that God was with Israel and Syria would be defeated.

Even though there was perfect unity among the prophets, Jehoshaphat asked —

“Is there not also a prophet of the LORD here? We should ask him the same question.” (1 Kings 22:7)

King Ahab replied —

“There is one more man who could consult the LORD for us, but I hate him. He never prophesies anything but trouble for me! His name is Micaiah son of Imlah.” (1 Kings 22:8)

Eventually, the prophet Micaiah arrived on the scene and proclaimed that the four hundred prophets had prophesied according to a lying spirit and not the Spirit of the Lord. Micaiah then prophesied the death of King Ahab and the defeat of Israel and Judea in the battle against Syria.

Both kings ignored Micaiah and followed the counsel of the lying spirit. The prophet Micaiah’s words proved to be accurate.

Today, I prayed:

Lord, send prophets to America who are willing to speak Your words no matter the cost to themselves, but also Lord, I pray for those who have spiritual ears, to listen and to understand what the Spirit is saying to our nation. (Based on Revelation 2:29)

What do you think and has the Lord spoken to you?

Join with me on Thursdays to fast and pray for America.

Do We Still Cast Out Demons? (Part 3)

dolly sad

What did the Jews do when a person was tormented by demons?

Now the Spirit of the LORD had left King Saul, and the LORD sent a tormenting spirit that filled him with depression and fear. Some of Saul’s servants said to him, “A tormenting spirit from God is troubling you. Let us find a good musician to play the harp whenever the tormenting spirit troubles you. He will play soothing music, and you will soon be well again.” (1 Samuel 16:14-16)

In Jewish theology, the scholars believed that everything came from God, even tormenting spirits. They had very little insight on Satan and the kingdom of darkness. Thus, soothing music was sometimes used to stabilize a tormented person. This was, in fact, the reason David was first introduced to King Saul.

The Jews also had exorcists who traveled from town to town. These men were basically fortune tellers, conmen, and magicians who put on a show and received money for their services. Spells and enchantments were uttered by them to heal sick people and to cast out demons.

It’s interesting to note that these exorcists did use a name to command the demons to leave people. As stated by Josephus, the historian, the name used by the exorcists was supposedly that of Solomon because the king wrote a book on magical healing and exorcism.

“In the name of Solomon, we command the demons to leave you!”

How successful were these Jewish exorcists?

A group of Jews was traveling from town to town casting out evil spirits. They tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus in their incantation, saying, “I command you in the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, to come out!” (Acts 19:13)

Obviously, the income for the Jewish exorcists had dropped quite a bit when Jesus and the apostles arrived on the scene. To compensate for their losses, the above group quit using the name of Solomon and began using the name of Jesus in their exorcisms.

What then happened to the seven sons of a leading Jewish priest named Sceva is one of the funniest stories in the Bible:

But one time when they tried it, the evil spirit replied, “I know Jesus, and I know Paul, but who are you?” Then the man with the evil spirit leaped on them, overpowered them, and attacked them with such violence that they fled from the house, naked and battered. (Acts 19:15-16)

Why did this happen to the seven sons of Sceva?

Tuesday’s Prayers for Prisoners (7/7/2015)

We all think of J. Hudson Taylor, founder of the China Inland Mission, as a mighty man of faith, but that’s because we can look at his accomplishments on the mission field. Yet, in the mid-1800’s, he was considered a radical and an oddball by other missionary societies who even warned their people to stay away from him.

Why was Taylor considered a radical and an oddball?

Because he dared to evangelize and do missionary work in China far differently than the accepted practices of the other missionary societies.

Not long ago, a biographer said of J. Hudson Taylor:

No other missionary in the nineteen centuries since the Apostle Paul has had a wider vision and has carried out a more systematised plan of evangelising a broad geographical area than Hudson Taylor. (Ruth Tucker)

Today, I prayed:

Lord, raise up hundreds of radical oddballs for Asia who dare to trust Your ways and are willing to ignore the accepted practices of our day. Pour out Your anointing upon them and set them loose in the various nations of Asia.

Join with me on Tuesdays to fast and pray for prisoners in Asia, according to Hebrews 13:3.

Will God Judge America (Part 6)

dolly-335

We Americans expect spiritual John Waynes to arrive on white horses during our nation’s worst times and rescue us from imminent disasters. This has often happened in the past when men, like John Wesley, George Whitefield, Charles Finney, Billy Sunday, Billy Graham, and others, have called America away from the spiritual abyss.

So, is there still some balm in Gilead for America?

Let’s look back at the events of the 2008 presidential election.

At the Democratic Convention in Denver, August 25-28, 2008, the party selected the two most radical pro-abortion candidates in the history of America as its standard bearers: Senator Barack Obama and Senator Joseph Biden. Both were Planned Parenthood endorsed candidates.

The Republicans countered at their convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, September 1-4, 2008, with two pro-life candidates in Senator John McCain and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. Governor Palin’s refusal to abort her son, Trig, a Down Syndrome baby, focused America’s eyes on the abortion issue.

Soon after the Republican convention, the polling data showed a dead even race between Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin. This was a remarkable comeback for McCain who had lagged behind Obama in the double-digit percentage range for weeks.

McCain/Palin finally inched into the lead heading into the second week of the month.

Then, on September 15, 2008, Lehman Brothers filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection. The following day, the Federal Reserve authorized an $85 billion bailout loan for AIG. Financial news swirled out of control until the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 was enacted, which then established the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).

With the bad economic news, Obama/Biden surged back into the lead and McCain/Palin wilted on the campaign trail. President Obama eventually won with a landslide victory on election night.

Spike Lee, film director and producer, later declared: “God Himself ordained the financial crisis to happen when it did in order to propel Barack Obama to victory.”

Lee’s words have haunted me over the last two years. Was he correct?

There’s no doubt in my mind the Lord could have held back the financial crisis until after the presidential election, but He didn’t. Why not? I wondered. After all, if the financial crisis had not hit, McCain could have been elected president and the Supreme Court’s balance could have been shifted to the right by now, with a better chance of Roe versus Wade being overturned sometime in the near future.

When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you and surround you and hem you in on every side, and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.” (Luke 19: 41 – 44)

Why did Jesus prophesy Jerusalem’s death warrant on the first Palm Sunday?

… because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.” (Luke 19:44)

The Greek word episkope in verse 44 is translated into our English word visitation in most Bible translations. Yet, episkope does not imply a visitor stopping by for a friendly visit. Its true meaning suggests that God the Judge visits a nation, examining the people to determine whether they should be blessed or cursed by Him.

Yes, Jesus is the Prince of Peace, but He is also the stumbling stone and a rock of offense, whereupon people and nations stumble, falling to their doom.

Jesus’ prophecy was fulfilled in 70 AD when a Roman army under General Titus destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple, killing over a million Jews in the process.

It’s now my sincere belief that the 2008 Financial Crisis was a plumb line event, which the Lord allowed to happen to discover how America measured up to Him.

Was America looking straight up to Him and His ways or was the nation tilted off center, leaning in another direction? What did the plumb line event reveal to the Judge?

Lou Engle, leader of the Call, stated it best: “In this election, we have bowed our knees to Baal and chosen prosperity over posterity.”

I agree with Engle and believe our nation failed the test. And I sincerely believe the Judge has signed America’s death warrant. It’s just a matter of time until the execution is carried out.

So, in retrospect, Spike Lee’s words proved to be accurate.

(An excerpt from New Wind Blowing by Larry Nevenhoven, Amazon eBook, published in 2008)

I wrote New Wind Blowing almost seven years ago, just after the historic election of an African-American man to the presidency of America. I believed then that we Americans could not repent enough to stop a massive Judgment of God from hitting America. Today, I believe it even more.

Maybe you disagree and even believe God will send us revival instead of His judgment. I hope you’re right, but can anyone really hope America will listen to a new generation of prophets who will speak messages of repentance?

I myself hold little hope this will happen and intend to spend little time on such an effort. Instead, I believe we Christians need to:

strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to and entangles us, and let us run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us, looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus…(Hebrews 12: 1-2 Amplified Bible)

No doubt, the appointed course of the race that is set before us will not be an easy one and we must prepare ourselves for it. (An excerpt from New Wind Blowing)

Will God Judge America? (Part 5)

dolly-335

Let’s study an example of the early Jerusalem church.

Jesus prophesied a Death Warrant for Jerusalem in 30 A.D.

The early Jerusalem church reacted to His prophecy by preaching and living the gospel of the kingdom of God. And as often as possible, they reminded Jerusalem of its errors.

Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ – this Jesus whom you crucified. (Acts 2: 36)

You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did. (Acts 7:51)

After Stephen’s death in 35 A.D., many Christians fled Jerusalem, but the apostles remained and continued preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God.

Even Herod’s cruel harassment of the church in 45 A.D. did not diminish its presence in the city. It continued to prosper in the midst of on-again and off-again persecutions for the next twenty years.

Luke’s account of the gospel was written in 60 A.D. His info came from eyewitnesses, probably the apostles. Thus, we know that Jesus’ Death Warrant prophecy was still resonating in the church at that time – almost thirty years later.

Then in 67 A.D., a Christian gave a prophetic word to the Jerusalem church. It reminded everyone of Jesus’ Death Warrant prophecy and warned of Jerusalem’s upcoming devastation. The prophecy advised all believers to flee the city.

By 69 A.D., Christians heeded the prophecy and left Jerusalem. So, when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem in 70 A.D., none of the Jerusalem church’s members perished in the siege.

We Christians need to follow the example of the early church. Like them, we are, first of all, citizens of the kingdom of God. Our American citizenship is secondary and temporary in comparison to our kingdom of God citizenship.

Our orders do not come from a president, a governor, or a mayor, but instead from a King. Whether we stay or leave a city should depend on Him, and not our personal fears or whims. And if we are staying, we need to heed the words Jesus spoke in His parable about a nobleman going to distant country:

“…Do business till I come.” (Luke 19:13 NKJ)

If we choose to stay, then we need to help reduce the pain and impact of the Lord’s upcoming tougher judgments on America so all can run with endurance the race set before us

What do I believe the Lord wants us Christians to do now?

First, the Vietnam War was a divisive conflict for America. On the one side were the doves, or anti-war groups, and opposing them were the hawks, or pro-war groups. The divisiveness from this war has continued forward into today’s America, and even into the Body of Christ.

So, we believers must check our hearts to see if we harbor any bitterness against America as a whole or against various anti-war or pro-war groups. If we discover bitterness in our hearts, these sins must be dealt with at the cross of Jesus Christ and forgiveness received.

Second, we Christians need to repent of our selfishness regarding the Vietnam War. Sadly, we have only cared about the pain inflicted upon us Americans. We have ignored the anguish suffered by the people of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.

Third, we Christians need to ask the Lord to raise up men, women, and groups that will go to the Southeast Asian immigrants in our communities and ask forgiveness for America’s lies, deceits, and broken promises to their native countries. Some Christians may even be asked by the Lord to travel as His ambassadors to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos to ask forgiveness of the people there.

Fourth, Christians need to stand in the gap and make financial intercession for our nation’s failure to keep its promises of aid to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos during the 1970’s. This can be accomplished by giving gifts of money to the poor and needy in these countries, many of who are still suffering from America’s broken promises.

Fifth, we need to seek the Lord to discover what other national sins, besides our treacherous handling of the Vietnam War, have caused abortion, illegal aliens, debt, unemployment, urban woes, drought, lackluster leaders, and Islamic terrorism to fall as God’s judgments on America. And we need to do it now!

Will this be tough to do? Yes, of course, but when has repentance ever been easy for a nation to swallow? (An excerpt from New Wind Blowing by Larry Nevenhoven, Amazon eBook, published 2008)

If we do the above, will we avoid harsher judgments by God in the future?

(Continued in Part 6)
