How to be a Radical Christian (viii).

But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you. (Matthew 5:44)

This is one of those divine ironies of scripture: loving your enemies while you are fighting them.

On the one hand, America must fight the Islamic Terrorists with everything that our armed forces can possibly muster up in order to protect innocent people in our nation and in other nations. It’s either fight or be slaughtered. The latter is not a viable option.

But at the same time, believers are called to love our enemies and pray for them. How can this be accomplished, right?

He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. (Luke 1:17)

If you’re old enough, maybe you remember the hunger strikes in Belfast, Ireland, during the 1980’s. That was when numerous IRA prisoners at the  British Maze prison made demands of the British government, and then went on hunger strikes until their demands were met. Margaret Thatcher was the Prime Minister; and she was not a weak-kneed leader. She refused to negotiate. The results were that ten young men starved. Many more were prepared to die, but then a miracle happened.

Parents of the remaining prisoners stepped in and had their sons hooked up to life support systems without their sons’ permissions. These parents loved their children too much to watch them slowly die. The hunger strikes ended.

Consider how much power parents have over young men. Children want to please their parents, especially in Middle Eastern Islamic cultures.

So, radical Christians need to pray and fast for the spirit of Elijah to come upon the parents of the Islamic terrorists so that these parents love their children enough to dissuade them from suicidal ventures.

How to be a Radical Christian (vii).

Blessed is he who considers the poor; the Lord will deliver him in a time of trouble. The Lord will preserve him and keep him alive, and he will be blessed on the earth. You [the Lord] will not deliver him to the will of his enemies. The Lord will strengthen him on his bed of illness; You [the Lord] will sustain him on his sickbed. (Psalm 41:1-3)

Looking at the Bible, the #1 way to be be blessed by your financial gifts is to obey the voice of God. If God tells you to give a person or a place, do it. You will always be blessed by your obedience.

The #2 way is probably different than what you have been taught. If you believe that you are automatically blessed for giving tithes and offerings to a church or a ministry, you’re wrong. There are no New Testament scriptures which endorse this theology. None at all. All of the scriptures that back up this teaching are in the Old Testament and refer to giving to the Temple or the Temple’s storehouse, and not a New Testament church.

But instead, all through the Bible, there are countless numbers of scriptures which promise a blessing for giving to the poor.

If I bestow all my goods to feed the poor…and do it in love, I will profit from this action. (1 Corinthians 13:3, written in a positive sense)

Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. (Luke 12:33)

And when he [Cornelius] observed him [the angel], he was afraid and said, “What is it, lord?” So he [the angel] said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.” (Acts 10:4)

He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, and He will pay back what he has given. (Proverbs 19:17)

Radical Christians will give radical-sized gifts to the poor.  They will do this in love and without calling attention to their deeds (Matthew 6: 1-4).  These unselfish acts will provide a measure of protection for themselves, their families, and their neighbors.

How to be a Radical Christian (vi).

And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” (Acts 19:15)

The number one rule in spiritual warfare is that a believer needs to be known in two places in order to have authority over demonic forces:  heaven and hell.

Being known in heaven comes with having your name written down in the Lamb’s Book of Life at salvation. This is an act of grace by our Lord, and has nothing to do with individual struggles or works. A believer’s authority is a part of the Christian’s makeup from his new birth onward.

On the other hand, being known in hell comes out of struggles, and then, eventual victories  over demonic forces that have influenced and controlled a believer in different areas of his life. If there are no victories, there will be very little authority over demonic forces.

For instance, I knew a man that was part of a prayer group. The prayer group began interceding against prostitution activity in his neighborhood, and the unclean spirit behind the activity. But the man failed to mention that he himself had a long standing problem with lust.

After a few days of prayer and fasting, prostitutes knocked on his door day and night, offering their services to him free of charge. It almost drove him over the edge. He withdrew from the prayer group.

In Part 5, I stated that a religious spirit empowers and guides the Islamic Terrorists. And the only way to overcome this religious spirit is for a bunch of Radical Christians to get free of the religious spirit that rules over our nation.

So, how do you get free of the religious spirit?

Most Christians will have to come out of their present churches in order to accomplish this feat.

How to be a Radical Christian (v).

And it was so, when the Philistine (Goliath) arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hastened and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. (2 Samuel 17:48)

The Philistine army was on one mountain. Israel was cowering on a mountain opposite the Philistines. A small valley ran between them. The ten-foot tall giant, Goliath, was dressed in bronze armor and was standing in front of the Philistine army, challenging Israel to a duel. He was armed with a sword, spear, and javelin. His shield bearer was standing off to his left and slightly in front of him, protecting him from arrows.

Now, standing out in front of the Israeli army was a fifteen year-old kid with a sling and five stones.  No armor. No sword. No spear. No javelin. No shield or shield bearer.  He was all alone; and he could expect no assistance from the nervous Nellies standing behind him wearing Israeli uniforms.

Goliath mocked and cursed David. Then David boasted about the Lord.

The Philistine giant and his shield bearer trudged forward, but what did David do? He didn’t walk. He raced toward his foe. And while he was running, he swung his sling around and around.

What do you think was going through the heads of the the Israeli soldiers as they watched the fifteen year-old kid racing toward the Terminator of that day? Probably something like this: “He’s a nut! He doesn’t have a chance. We are doomed.”

And yet none of the Israeli soldiers, including King Saul and David’s older brothers, had the courage to take David’s place. So, they stood and watched from a distance as David won the battle for them.

David’s running toward Goliath is a perfect illustration of how Radical Christians must help fight Islamic Terrorists. “What?” you say.

Not too many years ago, a well-known prophet prophesied what he saw was going to happen in California – death and destruction. He advised all Christians to move to safer states. Maybe, Montana, Utah, or Idaho.

Sadly, I agree with his visions about death and destruction in California and on the West Coast. But I disagree with his advice that we Christians should abandon ship and run for safety.

When the bombs begin exploding (and they soon will), Radical Christians must be set in place to be the Body of Christ, willing to reach out and help the hurting people, and to be leaders. This could be the church’s finest hour.

Jesus Ruined My Suicide

In 1985, I ran into a brick wall with my life. I needed thousands of dollars to start a publishing company and bail myself and my family out of debt. Every credit card and credit source was tapped out. There was nobody to turn to, not one drop of hope left in my tank. I was finished.

The one untouched asset that I had was a $125,000 life insurance policy …(to read full aritcle, click here.)

How to be a Radical Christian (v).

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”

And He said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’. On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 22:36-40)

Most of us Christians, even in times of rebellion,  love God. Why? Because when we gave ourselves to the Lord, He poured His love into our hearts. So in effect, our love for Him is His love back to Him, perfect in every way.

Now, loving neighbors as ourselves, that’s a different story. After all, there has to be some boundaries for our love, doesn’t there? No use in throwing our love-pearls before the swine, right?

So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself. (Ephesians 6:28)

The Greek word agape is translated into the English word love in Matthew 22:39 and Ephesians 6:28. And if you reread the two scriptures, you will notice an interesting point: we are to love our wives as our neighbors and as ourselves.

This agape type of love is different from the other Greek words translated into the English word loveeros (husband-wife love), storge (family love), and philia (friend’s love).  It is an unconditional love that cares not about the character flaws or weaknesses in the other person and does not require a reciprocal love in return. It is God’s love, hanging on the cross, and reaching out to all of mankind.

So, if you want to be a radical Christian, look at your neighbor and say to yourself, “If need be, I will lay down my life for you, just as I would for my wife.”

Love never fails… (1 Corinthians 13:8)

Would you have liked to travel along with the Apostle Paul on one of his journeys? Consider Silas’ experience in Acts 16: 11-40.

In the city of Philippi, Paul and Silas are doing some street ministry. Paul casts a spirit of divination out of a slave girl. Instead of being thankful for the girl’s deliverance, the owners are enraged and stir up the crowd against the two men.

Next, the city magistrates step into the melee,  rip the clothes off the two, beat them with cudgels, scourge them with a whip, toss them into prison,  and fasten their feet into stocks so that they can’t move.

Then, somehow, at midnight, Paul and Silas began praying and singing hymns. The power of God hits the place. Cell doors were opened. The jailer’s life was spared. The jailer’s household was saved. Paul and Silas were washed and fed. And then, returned to prison.

The next morning, the magistrates send some go-fors to release Paul and Silas from their cells. But what does Paul do? He says, “No way, Jose! We ain’t leaving this dandy place until the men responsible for putting us here come and say, ‘Pretty please with chocolate syrup all over it.’ Don’t even try to make us go. We ain’t moving!”

What do you think was going through Silas’ mind? He was bloody. He was sore. He was stiff. He was tired. And he might have been thinking something like this: “Paul is a radical nut! How can he possibly believe that those men will come here and beg us to leave?”

How? Paul had radical faith in God.

And radical Christians need this same type of faith to oppose Islamic terrorists.

But without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6)

How to be a Radical Christian. (iii)

For I am not shamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.  (Romans 1:16)

Have you ever shuddered or cringed a little when someone mentioned the name of Jesus to somebody? Maybe at work or at a ballgame. Maybe, you thought to yourself, there are proper places and times to talk about Jesus, but not here, and not now.

Well, have you heard the tradition surrounding the apostle Paul’s last few moments on earth? Talk about bad timing and bad places.

Emperor Nero arrested Paul for insurrection and threw him into prison. The apostle’s first stay in prison had resulted in most of the guards and many in Nero’s household converting to Christianity. So this time, Nero made sure that Paul had little contact with people or visitors.

On the day of Paul’s execution, Nero allowed just a few spectators and only the most hardened, veteran soldiers to escort the apostle to the execution site, outside Rome on the Tiber River.

Paul was unfazed by his fast approaching martyrdom. He preached the gospel as he walked along. His words touched the hearts of more than one soldier; and they, too, were executed with Paul that day.

Just think, Paul so believed in the life-giving message of the gospel that he was willing to seal the fates of any last-minute converts to the same death that was pronounced over him: beheading.

Now, that is a radical love for the gospel.

And that is what every radical Christian must have. A love for the gospel that can only be extinguished by the death of the believer.

If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels… (1 Cor. 13:1)

Now, I wish that you all spoke in tongues… (1 Cor. 14: 5

I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all do. (1 Cor. 14: 18)

Once again, I can hear the groans and the shouts. “Not tongues. Anything but that trivial twaddle. I ain’t doing it. No siree – no tongues for me. Never!”

Okay, relax. Take a deep, deep breath. Hold it for a minute or so. Now breathe out. Continue reading.

Let’s return to the same scenarion as Part 2. Your family is staying at the luxurious Berverly Wilshire Hote (where Pretty Woman was filmed), just off Rodeo Drive in Berverly Hills, California. Your wife and daughter are enjoying the shopping spree, and you are carrying enough plastic to pay for everything.

Then, three Mumbai-type terrorists enter the hotel lobby, AK-47’s blazing away and hand grenades exploding. Chaos and confusion reigns as dead bodies hit the floor.

Somehow, you grab your wife and daughter, and hide in a first floor cafe. As you crouch behind a table, you hear the sounds of people begging for their lives and the lives of their children. But then, bursts from the AK-47’s lets you know that mercy is not a part of the terrorists’ makeup.

You hear their footsteps approaching the cafe. It will only be seconds before they enter the door. You look at your wife and daughter, tears are streaming down their faces; they don’t want to die. They want you to do something. Anything. Just do something.

Are you going to pray? If so, how?

Now remember, your mind will be a pile of mush. You will have thoughts about wishing you would have stayed home, or should have gone to Hawaii instead of California, or spending a nice sunny day anywhere but not where you are at that moment. Plus, the fear, not wanting your family to die, and total confusion.

How will you quiet your mind to pray at that moment?

Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can not be uttered.

Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. (Romans 8: 27-28)

Remember: Radical Christians do not care what others think. They swim upstream against the religious current.

How to be a Radical Christian (i.)

Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. (1 Corinthians 14:1)

Maybe your first thought is, “Yuck! Who wants this Pentecostal/Charismatic phoney baloney spiritual gifts-type of stuff. Not me!”

Relax. Take a deep breath. Now, continue reading.

Let’s say that you and your wife take your daughter to the mall. She is three years old and dressed up in just the  cutest Bambi t-shirt and jeans outfit. Everyone looks at her and smiles. She’s a doll and you adore her, and would do anything for her.

But because you were in a hurry when you left home, you did not use the restroom, and you need to go – now. You tell your wife.  She rolls her eyes and says, “Oh honey, use the one in Macy’s Department Store. We’ll wait here for you by the kids play area.”

You rush to the restroom, do your duty, wash your hands and leave. As you walk back from of the store, you see a flash and hear an explosion from an Islamic terrorist’s bomb. It knocks you down. Glass particles and debris are all over you.

Brushing yourself off, you run to where you wife and daughter were waiting. When you get there, you see bodies all over the floor. Somehow, you find your wife and daughter. They’re dead; blood all over them.

Now, what are you going to do?

Are you going to call the police? Or the doctor? Or your pastor? Or the funeral home? Or are you just going to fall down and cry?

You see, at this disastrous moment, you need the gift of faith, the gift of healing, and the gift of miracles to try and raise your loved ones from the dead (1 Corinthians 12: 9-10). And I guarantee that you would do anything to have these gifts at that time, wouldn’t you?

So, what’s stopping you from seeking the spiritual gifts? Pride. Bad teaching. Laziness. What?

Remember: Radical Christians do not care what others think. They swim upstream against the religious current.
