Thursday’s Prayers for America on Friday (6/5/2015)

Dolly 77

America’s biggest problem is not President Obama or Vice President Biden or Senate Majority Leader McConnell or Minority Senate Leader Reid or Speaker of the House Boehner or House Minority Leader Pelosi or Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts or the Democrat Party or the Republican Party or the media or talk radio or the internet or ISIS or Global Warming and Climate Change or racial problems or the economy or whatever.

America’s biggest problem is God.

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (Hebrews 10:31)

Today, I prayed:

Lord, open America’s eyes to Your ways that will bring us true peace. Do not let them be hidden from us. Help us to understand that this is the hour of visitation by the Judge. (Based on Luke 19:42-44)

“Waa! Boo hoo! Everyone is picking on us Christians. Woe is us!”

I’m not totally ignorant to the problems we Americans are struggling with right now nor am I so hardhearted that I do not feel a little ticked off at the path our nation is treading on, but let’s put it in perspective, okay?

Let’s compare our problems with the ones believers are enduring in North Korea. Many of those believers are in prison, hoping to catch a mouse or rat or a cockroach to eat because they’re starving to death. Women believers in prisons are repeatedly raped and beaten. Added to all of this, they work twelve hours a day in horrendous manual labor jobs without proper clothing to protect them from the brutal cold temperatures.

And guess what?

The North Korean believers do not have Bibles to encourage themselves. All they have is a little strength to make it through each day because they have a quick glimpse of the King and know He’s worth it all.

Today, I prayed:

Lord, help us to hold fast and repent of our lukewarmness, which has caused us to be wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked before You. Give us the grace to purchase gold from You, refined in fire, so that we may enjoy Your riches and not our earthly ones. Clothe us in robes of white to cover our shame and anoint our eyes with divine eye salve so that we may see You and Your ways. (Based on Revelations 3:15-18)

On Sunday (May 3, 2015), Pam Geller, founder and president of American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) and Stop Islamization of America (SIOA), held a Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest in Garfield, Texas.

Two Muslims wearing body armor and armed with assault rifles attempted to defend Muhammad’s honor by attacking the event in hopes of killing as many people as possible. One policeman was wounded and both Muslims were killed. ISIS has now taken credit for the attack.

Since Sunday, Christians have either applauded or criticized Geller’s event.

WWJD?

Today, I prayed:

Lord, I pray that we American believers do not wage spiritual war as humans do, but rather, we use God’s mighty weapons to  knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments, and therefore, conquering evil by doing good. (Based on 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 and Romans 12:21)

I don’t claim to know the answers for racial relations in America, especially in light of the riots in Baltimore and Ferguson, but I absolutely do know the One who has all of the answers. His name is Faithful and True, Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Prince of Peace, Wonderful Counselor, Lord God of Hosts, Lamb of God, Creator, Savior, Master, Friend, and Jesus Christ.

Today, I prayed:

Lord, forgive us Americans for thinking we can handle the racial problems in our nation with more talk, more marches, more media coverage, more sound bytes on social media, and more of everything, except more of You. Open our ears to hear what You are saying to Your church in this hour because our only hope is You.

Thursday’s Prayers for America (4/16/2015)

Three days before His crucifixion, Jesus walked with His disciples on the road to Bethany, a four-mile journey from Jerusalem. He stopped at the summit of the Mount of Olives for a rest. The Temple and the city lay below Him in a panoramic scene.

Peter, James, John, and Andrew approached Him privately to ask about His prophecy concerning the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple. “When will these things happen and what will be the signs when these things are about to take place?

Jesus ignored the “when” part of their questions and spoke about the signs of what He termed the days of vengeance. The prophet Isaiah, many years earlier, had used a similar term to refer to the punishment of God’s enemies. A later prophet, Hosea, used the term: days of retribution.

The Lord specifically spoke about the destruction of Jerusalem with His disciples, which eventually occurred in 70 AD. We modern believers also look upon His words as being apocalyptic, or referring to the last days just before His return.

For the sake of this chapter, let’s view Jesus’ discourse as reported in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 22 in the same way the disciples did at that time, which was strictly about the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple.

Jesus stated that wars, earthquakes, and famines would take place and the disciples would be persecuted. But the disciples were not to worry because their persecutions would be opportunities for them to preach. Yet, when its enemies surrounded Jerusalem, the end was near for the city. The believers should then quickly flee to the mountains and not even return to gather their possessions.

Jesus specifically instructed the disciples to do something:

But pray that your flight will not be in the winter, or on the Sabbath. (Mathew 24:20)

But pray that it may not happen in winter. (Mark 13:18)

It’s interesting to note Jesus did not tell the disciples to pray that Jerusalem would be spared. That particular judgment had already been ruled on by the Judge and was an irrevocable one.

What Jesus did say revealed the compassion that our Lord has toward His people.

He placed the responsibility for the timing of the destruction of Jerusalem – as to season and day of the week – into the hands of the disciples. His reasoning for doing so was that He did not want to add bad weather or Sabbath travel burdens to the people’s woes.

What eventually happened is amazing.

The attack by Titus and the Roman armies began in late March 70 AD, and the final siege of Jerusalem ended in September of the same year. The disciples’ prayers were honored, as the attack did not occur in wintertime.

Is there something we can learn from this particular example of Jesus’ compassion?

For me, a light switched on when I read the verses because of my wife.

Let me give you some background, okay?

We now live in Temecula, California, which is half way between San Diego and Los Angeles. My job is in Temecula, but my wife works in a city thirty miles south of the city.

Can you envision a worse situation than my wife being stranded thirty miles away from our home if a massive calamity happened? It could be days or weeks before we would see each other again. Because of possible communication problems, we might not know if the other were injured or even dead. How horrendous would that be for us?

So, when the light switched on that morning, I prayed the following prayer:

“Lord, I ask that You schedule my wife’s work and travels so she is at home when any massive calamities or terrorists’ attacks happen in California. I trust You to honor this prayer in the same manner You did for the disciples’ prayers about the siege of Jerusalem.”

There is no partiality in the Lord. What He did for the disciples, He will do for us.

(The above is an excerpt from my book, Planning + Preparation = Survival, an Amazon eBook.)

Today, I prayed:

Lord, teach us Americans how to pray so that we are not just beating the air with our words. (Based on Luke 11:1 and 1 Corinthians 9:26)

Memories Pizza, Indiana, Christianity, and How Not to Win Spiritual Battles (Part 4)

These are the specific verses relating to homosexuality: Leviticus 18: 22 – 30; 20: 13; Romans 1:26 – 27; 1 Corinthians 6:9; 1 Timothy 1:10; and 1 Thessalonians 4:3.

Yes, homosexuality is a sin, but what does that mean for us business people who are faced with the possibility of providing services for same-sex weddings?

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people — not at all meaning the sexual immoral of the world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler — not even to eat with such a one. (1 Corinthians 5:9-11)

In Chapter 5 of 1 Corinthians, Paul deals with what the church should do about a sexually immoral member in the Corinthian Church, but he specifically gives an exception to people who are outside the church. His words imply that we can associate with sexually immoral people, which has to mean that we can do business with them, right?

Now, maybe you consider gay couples who are planning to be married as enemies of Christianity. If so, what about these scriptures?

Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For He makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. (Matthew 5:44-45)

If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head. (Romans 12:20)

I can find no scriptures that justify Christian business people denying services to gay couples for their weddings.

You see, our businesses are in the world and have to participate as members of the world system. We are called to be witnesses in the world of the love, grace, and mercy of Jesus Christ our Lord to all people, not squishy, wishy-washy wimps who hide behind statements like, “It’s against my religious beliefs.”

Get a clue!

Jesus came to save the world, not condemn it and we are called to be like Him.

So, who is really behind the Christian businesses versus same-sex weddings wars?

Thursday’s Prayers for America on Friday (4/10/2015)

With a slew of statistics projected on the slideshow behind him, California’s state climatologist had a stark warning during a Thursday presentation on the severity of the drought…

“You’re looking on numbers that are right on par with what was the Dust Bowl,” said the climatologist, Michael Anderson…

On Wednesday, California Governor Brown met for hours with leaders from environmental groups, agricultural organizations and water agencies to discuss the state’s response to the drought. (LA Times)

I usually pay little attention to what politicians say because they tend to exaggerate for their own benefit and welfare. Yet, this caught my attention and stayed on my heart.

California is drying up. We desperately need water.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Lord is allowing this drought to happen right now to get California’s attention.

Today, I prayed:

Lord, I pray that You send Your light and truth to California so that these may lead us into Your presence to discover the true reasons why the drought continues in our state. Our hope is in You, Lord, and we shall praise You for Your answers. (Based on Psalm 43:3-5)

Jesus looked at the Word believers in His day – the Pharisees – and said, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red;’ and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.” (Matthew 16:2-3)

Looking at the riots that happened in Ferguson, the uproar from the religious freedom law passed in Indiana, and the general lack of character displayed by America’s political leaders, shouldn’t we understand something by now? God is not working like He did in past times because, for the most part, He is not using government leaders to deliver us from our problems.

We need to hear a new word from heaven now!

Today, I prayed:

Lord, forgive us American believers for holding onto our traditions and old ways, hoping to breathe life into dead bones that will never be raised from their graves. Help us to hear what the Spirit is saying to the American churches for today. (Based in part on Revelation 2:7)

We Americans love superstars, big names, and flashy heroes who model their greatness at all times because the rest of us feel so common and live such ordinary lives.

But the truth is that if we have given our lives to Christ, we are royal sons and daughters of an awesome King who created the world and owns everything. We are more than conquerors, are living stones, members of a chosen generation, part of a royal priesthood, members of His holy nation, and heirs of all things through Jesus Christ. And besides that, we have open access to the Father and His throne at all times.

In God’s eyes, we are the superstars on earth because we said “yes” to Jesus and His grace.

Today, I prayed:

Lord, I pray that You open our American eyes to who You are in us so that we do the works You did and greater works because You went to the Father. (Based in part on John 14:12)

Thursday’s Prayers for America (3/19/2015)

Do I like fasting?

Heavens no!

I like eating Oreo cookies, pizzas, French fries, ketchup, lemon meringue pie, spaghetti, sweet and sour pork, burritos, potato chips, donuts, and so on and so forth.

Why do I fast?

I know fasting works. Because of fasting, I have seen people healed of diseases and delivered from demons. I have seen oppressive attitudes removed from organizations. I have seen breakthroughs in my life and in others. Over and over again, I have seen the benefits of fasting.

Not only that, the Bible agrees with me:

“Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of wickedness,
to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke? (Isaiah 58:6)

Why do I fast for America?

I absolutely have no hope in America’s political leaders, in our government, in the direction the traditional church is heading, in our economic system, in our national defense, and in the readiness of believers for the days that await us in the future. We are in a free-fall with no parachute to cushion our landing.

Do I really believe I can make a difference for America with my fasting?

Jesus fasted, and thus, must have thought that He could make a difference for Israel with His fasting. I’m hoping to do the same for America.

Today, I prayed:

Lord, raise up believers in America who are willing to be Repairers of the Breach and Restorers of Streets to Dwell In so that the foundations of our nation are restored and the waste places rebuilt. (Based on Isaiah 58:12)
