Prayers for America (4/6/2017)

One of my favorite prayers of all time was spoken by a slave woman whose husband was about to be sold off to another plantation at a slave auction. She prayed, “Lord if I could help You as easy as You could help me right now, I would.”

That simple prayer moved a ten-year old boy to borrow ten dollars from his dad and bid the money for the husband. The audience thought the bid was so ridiculous that no one else bid on the slave, even though the husband was strong and worth over a thousand dollars.

The young son paid for the slave and took him to the wife, giving the husband his freedom.

Our Lord is an awesome God who answers prayers.

My prayer today:

Lord, open up the hearts of American believers so that we have a love for Your truth. (Based on 2 Thessalonians 2:10)

What do you think and has the Lord spoken to you today?

Prayers for a Holy Spirit Revival of Senior Citizens (4/4/2017)

I was born in 1946.

This year marks the beginning of what we now call the Boomer Generation. It’s the demographic used to describe the post-World War II baby boom from its beginning in 1946 until 1964.

76 million of us were born during the Baby Boom Years. We now control 80% of all the financial assets, spend half of all consumer spending, consume 77% of all prescription drugs, and enjoy 80% of all leisure travel.

Our numbers include President Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush, President Donald Trump, Bill Gates, the late Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, Dolly Parton, Cher, Steven Spielberg, Sally Field, and countless others.

Okay, we Boomers have made money and lived for ourselves, but what is our legacy to the following generations? Have we, like King David, fulfilled the purposes of God for our generation?

I am ashamed to say that we have not.

My prayer today:

Lord, forgive us America’s senior citizens for not accomplishing pleasing works in Your sight. And awaken and strengthen us so what still remains in us of You and Your ways will help the generations after us to serve You. (Based on Revelation 3:2)

Prayers for a Holy Spirit Revival of Senior Citizens (3/28/2017)

“Honey, the Lord told me on the way home tonight how blessed I should feel to have a godly husband like you,” said Carol as we slipped into bed at the end of a long weekday.

“That may be true, but I’m going to shoot Fern,” I said looking at the ceiling.

“Sweetheart, what?” she said, her green eyes blinking in unbelief.

“After I shoot her, I might hang her by the neck, and then drop her over a steep cliff.”

“Dear, that’s not like you at all. You wouldn’t hurt anyone, especially my mom.”

“After today, I’ve changed my mind about a lot of things. I just might shoot her right between the eyes.”

We rolled over and fell to sleep.

This conversation actually took place in Glidden, Iowa, when Carol and I stayed at her mom’s five-acre farm. Fern was seventy-eight years old at the time, but don’t go thinking her age caused her to be a weak link in the local farming scene. Nothing could have been further from the truth. If anything, she still resembled a pioneer woman ready to hitch up a Conestoga wagon with a pair of oxen and head over the Rockies to Oregon.

Everything had been great between Fern and me up until that week. Her humor and intelligence made her a joy to be around, but all of the warm fuzzies ended when sweet corn season arrived.

Now, let me set the stage, okay?

The late July temperatures hovered near one hundred degrees with the humidity approaching tropical rainforest levels. No air conditioning. Ten zillion, pesty, ornery farm flies, and two acres of sweet corn. Carol worked for a company in Carroll, Iowa, and I had just finished detasseling for a hybrid seed corn company.

“Larry, would you like to help harvest some sweet corn?” asked Fern one morning.

“Sure, of course,” I said, not foreseeing any problems.

The next four days were an absolute “hell on earth” for me. The heat, humidity, and flies took their toll, but what pushed me over the edge were Fern’s drill sergeant’s tactics.

“Do this. Don’t do that. Be careful. Watch out. Grab this. Let go. It’s not that hot outside. Can’t you go a little faster? What’s wrong with you?”

She counted the number of pints of corn already done on the fourth day.

“We’ve already done one hundred and twenty pints so far, which is a record for me, but I know we can do at least two hundred pints, maybe even more.”

Her eyes gleamed with the possibilities of being listed in the Guinness World Records and the Prairie Farmer. That night I spouted off to Carol about offing her mom.

The next morning I crept out of bed at an early hour and tiptoed down to the family room. There I dropped to my knees on the carpet.

“Lord, what’s my problem? Why do I want to shoot a sweet, seventy-eight year old lady?” I prayed.

The Lord spoke to my heart after a long while: “You’ve given up on senior citizens. You think they just want to collect their social security checks and sit on porches, taking it easy until they die. You don’t believe I will use them in a move of My Spirit in America.” Then, He added, “I haven’t given up on them and neither should you. Repent of your attitudes.”

I repented before the Lord that morning.

Fern Fielder, a great mother-in-law (1920 to 2008).

The above event took place in July of 1997.

My prayer today:

Lord, breathe Your Spirit upon the senior citizens of America to bring them back to life so that they stand on their feet and become an exceedingly great army for Your glory. (Based on Ezekiel 37:10)

After Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, cell phone towers were downed almost immediately and electrical power outages blanketed the city. A few sporadic text messages squeaked out to people outside the city, but otherwise, the hurricane victims were shut out from receiving any communications about rescue responses to their plights. The victims were kept in the dark until rescuers showed up at their homes.

What little communications the hurricane victims did have, after Katrina hit, were with their nearby neighbors. Life and death decisions were hurriedly made without much insight.

The second communications dilemma of Hurricane Katrina was the lack of adequate communications after the hurricane hit. And if you think about it, it was a major miracle so few people died because of this.

All plans and preparations for upcoming calamities must address this second dilemma. It may well be a matter of life and death for many people.

…do not go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity; better is a neighbor who is near than a brother far away. (Proverbs 27:10)

Californians and other West Coast citizens are some of the worst neighbors in America. This is not due to being mean and unfriendly, but rather, many of us commute to workplaces far away. We leave early and arrive home late. Our time is limited for interaction with neighbors during the week.

When Saturdays roll around, it’s family time. We travel to see parents or go to beaches or Disneyland. We attend churches on Sundays, which are often miles away. We travel, travel, travel.

Most of us don’t even know the names of our neighbors next door or how many kids they have. This information can only be gleaned by spending time with them.

Okay, let’s assume a disaster strikes here in California or the West Coast.

A nuclear bomb hits the area. Your wife and child are seriously injured. Both need help right away, but the phones are dead, the streets are impassable, and the air is filled with screams. What will you do?

The obvious answer is to run next door to your neighbors.

What do you think they will say to a person they don’t really know? And how much energy will they really invest helping you when they themselves probably need help, too?

…You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22:39)

Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 7:12)

We Southern Californians need to make extra special efforts to know our neighbors. If this means breaking our present Saturday or Sunday routines, then let’s take a hammer and smash away.

“Train like we are going to fight.” (First Army maxim)

My prayer today:

Lord, help us American believers to use the time wisely during Trump’s presidency to build relationships with our neighbors so that we can be ready to show Your love to them during the dark days in the near future.

I was tired that morning when we parked the Honda next to Phil’s Jeep in Pamela’s driveway. The record seventy-degree temperatures and bright sunny skies did little to energize me. The previous seven weeks had ground me down with Pamela’s wasting away day by day. Her increased reliance on the morphine pump for pain had caused her body organs to begin shutting down. The end loomed near.

Jane opened her door and stepped out of the car. She walked in front of the bumper and stopped to look through the windshield at me, still sitting behind the steering wheel. She mouthed, “What’s wrong,” at me. I shrugged my shoulders and opened the door.

“Sorry, honey,” I said, stepping outside to walk with her. “I’m just tired today.”

“Me, too,” she said, placing her arm around my waist and leaning her head against my shoulder.

“No one should ever die on sunny days like this, especially seven days before Christmas.”

She nodded her head.

We walked into the house without knocking or ringing the doorbell. Formality had lost its meaning on us.

“We’re out in the kitchen,” shouted Phil.

Faye greeted us with hugs while Phil saluted from the breakfast nook table. The four of us were dressed in our normal garb of jeans and t-shirts with nearby sweatshirts draped over chairs, just in case the weather changed.

“I’ve made some coffee. Help yourself,” said Faye, pointing at the coffee maker on the black tile counter.

We poured ourselves a cup and sat down with them at the table.

“How’s she doing,” asked Jane.

“The hospice gal stopped by and told us that she’s slipped into a shallow coma and probably won’t wake up again. The end may happen today,” said Phil.

We chitchatted a while longer. Faye and Phil then left to do some Christmas shopping.

Jane and I drifted into the great room where I sat down in the recliner. My eyes closed almost immediately. A dreamless sleep engulfed me.

“Dylan, Dylan, wake up.”

I struggled to open my eyes and when I did, Jane’s head was next to my ear. She had whispered to me.

“What happened? What time is it? What’s wrong?” I said in rapid-fire bursts, straining to sit up.

“Shush. Listen.”

Someone was singing in a cherubic voice.

Jane pointed at me and motioned for me to follow her. We tiptoed down the hallway to Pamela’s room. We peeked around the corner and saw Pamela with her hands in the air, praising the Lord. I winked at Jane, not knowing what else to do.

“Dylan and Jane come in here,” Pamela said. “Don’t make me whistle, okay?”

A quick memory crossed my mind of Pamela putting her two forefingers in her mouth to form a shrill whistle. She had done it many times at our Last Chance meetings, which always made me laugh aloud at the ridiculousness of an eighty-four year old woman doing such a thing.

Jane walked to one side of the bed while I went to the other side. Pamela lay under the sheets, almost nothing left of her. The cancer had exacted its vicious toll on her muscles and fatty tissues. She reached out her blue veined hands to us. We gently held them in our own.

“The Lord is taking me home today,” she said with a big smile on her face, ” and I’m ready to go. I want to see Jesus and my husband Eldon. I’m so excited.”

What can you add to a statement like this? Nothing.

“But the Lord wants me to tell you two something before I leave.”

“Really?” said Jane, her eyes looking straight at me.

I shrugged.

“Yes, now listen up.”

We nodded in agreement, turning our attention to her.

“The Lord wants the Last Chance groups, like yours, to spread all along the West Coast, from San Diego to Seattle. He wants to use senior citizens as His last chance army to touch millions of people −”

“We don’t know how to do this,” I blurted out, not thinking beforehand.

“Shush! Of course, you don’t, but He knows how to do it. Fast and pray and He will show you.”

“Can you tell us more?” I asked, desperately seeking more details.

She smiled at my words and then gasped. Her eyes stared upward as she stepped into eternity.

We stood there for a few minutes, not saying anything or even moving, until Jane pulled the sheet over Pamela’s head.

“Well, what do you think?” she asked.

“I don’t have any answers,” I said.

“Then, Dylan, it looks like we need to fast and pray, right?”

I nodded.

Prayers for Healing and Deliverance (3/14/2017)

run

The female pastor walked to the pulpit and began the eulogy for my high school friend. I have no idea what she said because the Lord chose this moment to speak to me.

The Holy Spirit whispered to my heart: “My church is a bunch of nice losers. They lay their hands on the sick and pray for them, but when they die, they aren’t mad at all. They don’t check themselves out to see what happened or what they may have done wrong with their prayers and actions. They accept defeats and don’t think anymore about them.

“Now, Major League baseball teams are all filled with good players. Each player has to be one of the best in the world to make it to the Major Leagues. Losing teams have good players on their rosters, too. But after a while, losing teams’ players don’t mind losing because after all, they still receive their Major League paychecks and bonuses.

“But winning Major League baseball teams are different. They hate losing and will do anything and whatever it takes to win. They hate losing.

“I want My church to hate losing!”

(Excerpt from The Hunt for Larry Who by Larry Nevenhoven, ©2014, Amazon eBook)

My prayer today:

Lord, help American believers to fear You so that we will hate evil in all of its forms, including sickness and demonic oppression, and help us to rid ourselves of our lukewarm Laodicean attitudes. (Based on Proverbs 8:13 and Revelation 3:15)

Prayers for America (3/9/2017)

11160680_10202970551704040_6853963304935390655_n

“Run for your lives. There are too many Philistines! We’ll all be slaughtered,” yelled the Israelites.

The soldiers dropped their weapons en masse and fled the battlefield for the hills surrounding the area. Clouds of dust marked their scrambling footsteps, heading toward safety.

“Don’t leave us! Help!” cried the left-behind wounded soldiers, scattered about the field. Their pleas echoed off the backs of the retreating men because it was every man for himself that day.

Four Israelites remained in the middle of the battlefield. They formed a small square with their backs to each other and their swords pointing out at the advancing Philistine army.

“What’s the plan, my king?” shouted Eleazar over his shoulder.

King David nodded his head at the enemy. “Our God is for us,” proclaimed the king “Let’s continue fighting until all of these uncircumcised Philistines are either dead or retreat from the battlefield.”

The above fictionalized version of 2 Samuel 23:9-10 and 1 Chronicles 11:12-14 is a perfect snapshot of spiritual warfare. It depicts a few believers willing to trust God and His words to fight Satan and his demonic horde while the bulk of Christianity sits on the sidelines, watching from a safe seat.

No one can determine for sure ahead of time, which believers will stand with us in our spiritual battles. That depends on spiritual maturity and the mercy of the Lord. But we can prepare ourselves ahead of time by learning as much as possible about spiritual warfare.

Why is this so important?

Look what eventually happened because David and the three soldiers continued fighting after all the other Israelites fled the battlefield:

…The Lord brought about a great victory; and the people returned after him only to plunder. (2 Samuel 23:10)

(Excerpt from Storming the Kingdom by Larry Nevenhoven, © 2014, Amazon eBook)

I have no doubt that God has set President Donald Trump in the White House for His purposes and to allow Americans some time to prepare for the dark days ahead, but even so, the Lord needs some Davids to stay on the battlefield and fight.

My prayer today:

Lord, raise up American believers who will take up the whole armor of God, that they may be able to withstand the enemy’s attacks in the days ahead, and having done all, to stand and fight the good fight of faith. (Based on Ephesians 6:13 and 1 Timothy 6:12)

Prayers for America (2017)

11160680_10202970551704040_6853963304935390655_n

Is Israel important to American believers?

“The day is coming,” says the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. (Jeremiah 31:31 NLT)

The New Covenant, which believers enjoy today, was offered to all of mankind because of Israel and Judah.

But some of these branches from Abraham’s tree—some of the people of Israel—have been broken off. And you Gentiles, who were branches from a wild olive tree, have been grafted in. So now you also receive the blessing God has promised Abraham and his children, sharing in the rich nourishment from the root of God’s special olive tree. (Romans 11:17 NLT)

All of the blessings of the Old Testament and New Testament belong to Gentile believers because we have been grafted into a Jewish tree with Jewish roots. If we want, we can think of ourselves as “grafted-in Jews.”

Thus, we need America to honor its commitments and to bless Israel.

My prayer today:

Lord, remind President Donald Trump of his campaign promises for Israel and that he promised to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Place a wall behind him so he can only go forward to fulfill his promises.

Paul never glamorized the gospel! It is not success, but sacrifice! It’s not a glamour gospel, but a bloody gospel, a gory gospel, and a sacrificial gospel! 5 minutes inside eternity and we will wish that we had sacrificed more! Wept more, bled more, grieved more, loved more, prayed more, given more! (Leonard Ravenhill)

Prayers for Healing and Deliverance (2/21/2017)

run

If we go to a doctor and learn we have a terminal illness, what would we do next? Call City of Hope? Call Mayo Clinic? Book a flight to a Benny Hinn Crusade? Drive to the closest healing room? Call for a prayer meeting? What?

No one wants to consider these questions, but the odds are that many of us will face such situations during our lifetimes. Shouldn’t we at least prepare ourselves ahead of time?

Just so you know: I’m not against doctors, nurses, and hospitals. I’m not against Benny Hinn nor am I against the healing room ministries nor am I against prayer meetings.

In those days, King Hezekiah was sick and near death. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, went to him and said to him, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.'” (2 Kings 20:2)

King Hezekiah was thirty-nine years old at the time, had been king of Judah for fourteen years, and according to scripture “had done what was right in the sight of the Lord.” So, what did Hezekiah do after he heard the bad news?

Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall and prayed to the Lord, saying, “Remember now, O Lord, how I have walked before You in truth and with a loyal heart and have done what was good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. (2 Kings 20:3)

Hezekiah turned away from Isaiah and the other people in his room at the time and sought the Lord. He knew he had standing before the Lord because to the best of his ability he had walked in faithfulness to Him.

The result: the Lord added fifteen years to King Hezekiah’s life.

My prayer today:

O Lord, help us American believers to trust in You with all of our hearts, to not trust in our own understanding, to acknowledge You in all of our journeys, to not be wise in our own eyes, to fear You, and depart from evil so that we will have healing for our bodies and strength for our bones. (Based on Proverbs 3:5-8)
