Prayers for California to Wake Up (1/29/2019)

The prophet Amos lived just ten miles outside of Jerusalem. He was a sheep breeder and a master shepherd and definitely not a professional prophet. But the Lord told him to travel to Bethel and prophesy against the Northern Kingdom – Israel.

Amos obeyed and traveled there to point out the many calamities, droughts and famines the Lord had brought upon Israel because of their many sins. Yet, the nation refused to listen to Amos about repenting and returning to God. Then, Amos proclaimed –

Therefore, thus will I do to you, O Israel; and because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God. (Amos 4:12)

Forty years later, Israel met God as the Judge. His guilty verdict against Israel was carried out by Assyria. The nation was erased and led into captivity. It wasn’t until 1948 – twenty-six hundred years later – that Israel became a nation again.

O California, you are much younger than Israel was when it rebelled against God. But you are more accountable because you have millions of Bibles, thousands of churches, Christian TV and radio stations, memories from the Azusa Street Revival and houses of prayer in all of the major cities. So, California, what’s your excuse?

California repent or prepare to meet your God!

My prayer today:

Lord, have compassion on California, raise up hundreds of prophets to speak Your warnings to the cities of California before allowing Your judgments to fall on the state. (Based on 2 Chronicles 36:15)

Join with me on Tuesdays to fast and pray for California and the West Coast.

Politicians, False Prophets and Jesus (Part 6)

Global Warming

Two years after his An Inconvenient Truth documentary hit the movie theaters in 2006, former Vice President Al Gore spoke at the New Baptist Covenant Celebration in Atlanta.  “Global warming is not a political issue,” Gore told a crowd of approximately 2,500 paying attendees. “It is a moral issue. It is an ethical issue. It is a spiritual issue.”

Gore repeated his views that increasing amounts of carbon dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere was causing a global climate crisis. He used four Bible verses to justify his spiritual issue assertion:

Then He also said to the multitudes, “Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it is.55 And when you see the south wind blow, you say, ‘There will be hot weather’; and there is.56 Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern this time? 57 “Yes, and why, even of yourselves, do you not judge what is right? (Luke 12:54-57)

“The evidence is there,” Gore said. “The signal is on the mountain. The trumpet has blown. The scientists are screaming from the rooftops. The ice is melting. The land is parched. The seas are rising. The storms are getting stronger. Why do we not judge what is right?”

Robert Parham, the executive director of the Baptist Center for Ethics referred to Gore as a Baptist prophet and added, “Prophets are unacceptable because their truth is inconvenient.”

Jesus said that we should judge prophets by their fruit. So let’s do that, okay?

First, if Al Gore is a true prophet, the truths he proclaimed in his ground-breaking documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, should be accurate. Are they?

Not really. Almost all of his predictions have failed so far. A judge in England went so far as to demand that nine untruths in the documentary be changed or a syllabus provided for the teachers, in order for the documentary to be shown in the nation’s school classrooms. Gore and his group caved in and provided a syllabus. Others have suggested even more errors than just nine.

Second, money, and lots of it.

Gore earns between $100,000 and $150,000 per speech. His wealth is estimated at almost $300 million dollars. Although his royalty earnings from his books and film projects are pledged to his nonprofit, Climate Reality Project, he has successfully leveraged himself as a climate activist and received invitations to be involved in numerous lucrative deals over the years.

Third, scriptural justification.

Gore’s use of Luke 12:54-57 to justify his spiritual issue assertion has nothing to do with his theories on global warming. He could just as well have used, “Balaam rose up in the morning and saddled his ass” because it’s just as meaningless to his cause as the verses in Luke.

Fourth, hypocrisy.

Isaiah, Jeremiah, Elijah, Elisha and other prophets of God, not only preached what Israel needed to do to avoid calamitous judgments, they also lived in the righteous ways they expected others to follow.

But a critic of Gore said, “Al’s a limousine liberal, a tiresome pedant and climate alarmist who lives a jet-setting, carbon-profligate lifestyle while preaching asceticism for everyone else.” He lives in an oceanfront six-bedroom, $8.9-million villa — the exact place where he predicted the water would rise twenty feet when the ice in Antartica melts.

Okay, is Al Gore a prophet?

Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. (Matthew 24:11)

I believe Gore’s fruit shows that he is a false prophet on global warming. And if he is the point man who is at the forefront of the global warming movement throughout the world, what can we say about the others who are following him? At the least, I believe they are deceived and at the worst they are also false prophets and maybe even greedy hucksters.

It’s my opinion that God is still in control of the weather and that the global warming movement is an anti-God money scam.

You, of course, need to make up your own mind.

Global Warming

As a reminder: let’s look once again at what God said to the prophet Isaiah –

Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure” (Isaiah 46:10 NKJV)

These words were so important that He repeated them here and here.

Thus, if God was able to look into the future when He set the foundations of the earth, do you really think He would have given humans enough power – good or bad – to destroy the earth? Is the One who fixed the stars, sun and moon in the heavens and also created the earth and all of its organisms so naive to overlook any important point like this?

Of course not!

From the Book of Genesis to the Book of Revelation, only Joshua, Elijah and Jesus have affected climate conditions so far.

Joshua asked God to have the sun and moon stand still so he could finish his nation’s battle with the Amorites.

And there has been no day like that, before it or after it, that the LORD heeded the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel. (Joshua 10:14)

Elijah walked into King Ahab’s court and said, “As the Lord God of Israel lives, there shall be no rain or dew in Israel for the next few years unless I give it the word.”

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain…And he prayed again and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit. (James 5:17-18)

Jesus and His disciples sailed in a fishing boat across the Sea of Galilee to the opposite side. Jesus fell asleep. A massive tempest arose, causing large waves to wash over the boat. The disciples feared for their lives and awakened Him. Jesus stood up and rebuked the wind and waves. The storm immediately ceased and the sea was calm.

Jesus looked at them and said, “Where is your faith?”

And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!” (Mark 4:41)

Now, in the end-times, the two witnesses who will prophesy for one thousand two hundred and sixty days just before Jesus returns will be able to control some climate conditions.

The two witnesses have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy… (Revelation

Yes, mankind’s sins have caused droughts and climate problems over a single nation, but it has not been a global phenomenon since the great flood nor will it be again until God cleanses the earth with fire.

So, what’s the real problem with global warming?

Global Warming

Adam and Eve represented all of humanity when they lived in the Garden of Eden. Thus, when Adam and Eve sinned, their actions constituted a 100% rebellion by humanity against God.

Then because of Adam’s and Eve’s sin, Satan became the god of this age, the prince of this world and the prince of the power of the air.

Yet, even though Satan and a third of the angels replaced God and His holy angels in the spiritual governmental positions over the earth, this evil horde had limitations placed upon them by God. They were still His created beings and trembled before Him.

And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that Job has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person.” So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD. (Job 1:12)

So the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, Job is in your hand, but spare his life.” (Job 2:6)

And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” (Luke 22:31-32)

The Book of Job provides us great examples of the limits God places on Satan, but it also provides two Satan-created weather examples –

While he was still speaking, another messenger arrived with this news: “The fire of God has fallen from heaven [lightning] and burned up your sheep and all the shepherds. I am the only one who escaped to tell you.” (Job 1:12)

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, “and suddenly a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you!” (Job 1:18-19)

And also the Book of Revelation shows another demonic-created weather example –

He [the false prophet] performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven [lightning] on the earth in the sight of men. (Revelation 13:13)

So, can Satan cause weather related problems? Yes, but within the limits God places upon him.

And just so you know, we can expect more Satan induced weather problems in the days ahead because false Christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders, hoping to deceive mankind, even us believers. Some of these will most likely involve weather phenomenona.

What about man? Can he affect the weather?

Global Warming

What always encourages me when I look at today’s issues is what God said to the prophet Isaiah –

Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure” (Isaiah 46:10 NKJV)

Now, consider His words for a moment, which He repeated here and here.

Therefore, if we agree with the Bible, we then must believe that the Creator of heaven and earth saw all of today’s fuss and worry about global warming before He created the world and mankind, right? Yet, even so, He still went ahead with His creation, confidant that His counsel (plans and purposes) would be more than enough to withstand every problem in the future.

What were/are God’s plans?

Then God said, “Let Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) make man in Our image, according to Our likeness [not physical, but a spiritual personality and moral likeness]; and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the cattle, and over the entire earth, and over everything that creeps and crawls on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26 AMP)

Notice that God gave authority to mankind over all the animals on the earth, but not over  the weather, the various climates throughout the earth or over the solar system. This means He kept all of these in His own hands, right?

If we have any doubts about who is in charge of weather, these should all be erased with the mentioning of one incident –

When Noah was 600 years old, on the seventeenth day of the second month, all the underground waters erupted from the earth, and the rain fell in mighty torrents from the sky. The rain continued to fall for forty days and forty nights. (Genesis 7:11-12 NLT)

A thousand years after the Great Flood, God made His covenant with Israel. He promised to give rain to the nation in its proper seasons so that Israel’s land would produce crops and its trees would bear fruit. These promises were  predicated on Israel following God and obeying His law.

But if Israel failed to follow Him or obey His law, God promised to withhold the rain from from falling on Israel.

Have you ever wondered why the Arabs and other nations didn’t take over the land of Israel before the Jews returned in significant numbers to it in the Twentieth Century?

Rabbi Kohen points out the land suffered an unprecedented, severe and inexplicable (by anything other than supernatural explanations) drought that lasted from the first century until the 20th – a period of 1,800 years coinciding with the forced dispersion of the Jews…

For 1,800 years, it hardly ever rained in Israel. This was the barren land discovered by Mark Twain. So-called “Palestine” was a wasteland – nobody lived there. There was no indigenous Arab population to speak of. It only came after the Jews came back…(Joseph Farah, WND, 11/21/2007)

Nobody wanted the land of Israel until the Jews came back because it was a wasteland. God then allowed rain to fall on Israel.

Okay? God is in charge of weather and climates. Period.

But what about Satan? Can he influence weather?

Inside Israel

Once again, it’s time to hear from our sister in Jerusalem about what she is witnessing there as a believer in Yeshua. Put your prayer shawls on and pray for Israel and Sister J. Now here she is —

“The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.” (ROMANS 11:26, 27)

Greetings with grace and mercy in The Blessed Name of our Lord, Yeshua h’meshiach, Jesus Christ, Messiah, The Deliverer …The Just Judge Who is The Author of mercy, Truth and grace.  May HE alone be glorified and blessed, and may you be blessed and encouraged.

It is the first day of the new year 2019 and I pray for your BLESSING as I write. It is the new year on what we refer to here as the ‘civil calendar’.

When we first arrived in ’94 we were taught that ‘we Israelis’ go by the Hebrew calendar here (this year according to the Hebrew calendar is 5,779).  The Gregorian New Year is NOT a ‘holiday for us’ and in those early years of our aliyah, it seemed as if it was sacrilege to even think about wishing anyone a good New Year. Our New Year was at Rosh h’Shana (ACTUALLY at Passover…but we will not get -back- into that again now).

Slowly over the years however, as aliyah has increased from Western nations, the western celebrations of New Year was less and less hidden.  The Russians, who, from Soviet tradition, celebrate the new year big time with trees and a sort of Santa Claus, were easier to shame than these haughty westerners. This year celebrating the western New Year seems to have burst forth in full bloom with even FIREWORKS in Tel Aviv. Although still not a holiday, about 20% of the country is said to take note.

As I listened to a discussion about this on the news, the commentator brought up an interesting point: “It personifies the tension that we live in here between being called (by God)  to be a nation and a people “set apart” (God’s calling) and wanting to have a place among the nations (the secular longing).

Numbers 23:9 Balaam spoke the words that Balak did not want to hear either:

For from the top of the rocks I see him, And from the hills I behold him; There! A people dwelling aloneNot reckoning itself among the nations.”

Nor do many Israelis wish to hear this, but God WILL have His way.

Every year since 1993, the Lord has given’ me a Word for the year. One that He will teach me from and bring to my attention as I read. I never know what it will be until He nudges my heart suddenly. This year’s word is DELIVER/DELIVERER.  I am excited to learn what He has for me with this.

I know from so many of you about the different narrow, trying places that your nations have found themselves in this past year.  I heard from a dear Alaskan friend this morning that another 5 or 6 earthquake shook them into the new year, bringing the number of aftershocks and other earthquakes to above 6,100 (!) since 30th of November when the 7.3 hit.  Now that is some pretty tangible reminder of SHAKING!

I know from dear friends in Great Britain how the tensions surrounding the Brexit battle have shaken and continues to shake their nation and leadership.  Those of you in South America, and actually, so many countries, have also shared struggles.

But between personal tragedies and nationwide disasters the testimonies of His Peace, His Deliverance and His Joy have rung clearly. “Founded upon The Rock!’  It is particularly poignant – real – when talking with some of you as loved ones pass through the eternal gates…and some of us draw near ourselves.  ‘We are founded UPON THE ROCK THAT CAN NOT BE SHAKEN!’

Even in the most uncertain, unstable Middle East.

And yes, in plain old life, we have certainly had our opportunities here to test where our feet are standing.  Probably most of you know that we are scheduled to have early elections on the 9th of April.  What a BELEGAN! (that wonderful Hebrew word that I have explained before meaning something like a virtual spaghetti of chaotic confusion!)

Yair Lapid has given the grandiose  promise that if he is elected the first thing that he will do is sell the Prime Minister’s plane.  Avi Gabbay, the leader of the Labor (left wing) party broke away from Tzippe Livni’s (ha Tunioa) party in a surprise move today while I believe THREE new parties have already announced their entry into the battle. Big names are running between political parties faster than the shuffling of a deck of cards (a strange metaphor for me to use, but appropriate).  It makes a kindergarten look like a peaceful island and it is embarrassing to me. The ultimate goal: Overthrow Binyamin Netanyahu!

One of our patients was in on Friday morning and my boss asked him who he was going to vote for. “ANYONE but Netanyahu! he spat. “We HAVE to get him out!

I perked up. “Who do you think could do the job Shauel?”  I asked him.

He turned to me. ”‘I have no idea but we have had enough of him! He doesn’t do ANYTHING! We have no peace.  We need peace! We need to give them a land of their own and just separate from them!”

Oh, he was angry.

“But WHO?” I pressed on. Give me one name?”

“I don’t know.  There isn’t anyone but there will be.”

Great logic, I thought.  “Let’s see…we gave them Gaza, green and flourishing, and got a hornets’ nest of Hamas terror.  We left Lebanon and got Hezbollah. Bibi has been able to tap dance through the incredible pressure that the world is putting on us. Do you really think that anything we give them would be enough?’  I asked.

“No.  They want it all. BUT ENOUGH OF BIBI!  SOMETHING HAS TO GIVE SOMEWHERE!”

Sounded to me just like the earthquakes in Alaska, the tension builds in the tectonic plates and suddenly it all shifts violently under our feet. Sudden change!  Like an earthquake!

Another change was announced here. One we have been hearing about suddenly came through the door.  I don’t pretend to understand it, nor do I really want to.  I am asking The Lord to help me understand it enough.

As of January 1, we have entered stage 2 (or 3 or 5??) on the way to having a cashless society.  We are now limited in cash transactions.  That’s an unsettling (earthquake) feeling for those of us hold-outs who do NOT use credit cards or bank transactions or automatic payments etc. etc. etc.  I was discussing the new law with our money changer this morning.  I have known Netaly since she was about 10.  Her father served in the army with my boss near the northern border more than 30 years ago.  Their last name is Goeli which means “my Deliverer.

When I told Netaly that I don’t use a credit card nor a smart phone she gasped.  I showed her my small Nokia cell phone and she looked horrified.  ‘Wow!  That’s an ‘antique!’ But how do you know about sales?  You can’t even get sale items unless you download the coupon on your smart phone. Especially with prices skyrocketing,” she informed me.

“I’m more concerned about paying our bills.  Our electric bill has not been arriving and when I finally get it, there are late payment charges tagged on.  When I call to solve the problem, they tell me which app to download.”

Catch 22. They are on their way to doing away with payment altogether (along with water, gas and every other utility.  This is no longer some weirdo conspiracy theory, it is at the door.  The VERY kind bank worker (there ARE no longer tellers because there is NO LONGER MONEY KEPT AT OUR BANKS. Our bank workers are there to help us with technical problems and transactions) told me oh so gently, that very soon I will simply HAVE to go cashless.

“So please tell me.  What happens when the world suddenly gets unplugged?  When the cyber umbrella falls?”

He smiled at me patiently. “That won’t happen.  It is all backed up in ‘the cloud.’”

I thought about years ago, back in the 1970s.  We lived in a small Alaskan village facing Siberia.  People had generators, oil boilers, wood stoves, kerosene lamps etc.  One day our village arrived into the “modern world.”  THE ELECTRIC COMPANY PLUGGED US IN!  It was all spanking new and full of guarantees.

Everyone was in wonderland and everyone got rid of their old wood burning stoves…except us.  I remember the day that the lights went out in NYC and the city became paralyzed and panicked.  Here we were in a remote village where the temperature regularly fell to -40 below 0 with 80 mile per hour winds and people were going to DEPEND upon the electricity never going out. NOT US!  And yes, it happened (thankfully not for too long) that there was a glitch and the electricity went out, and our little house was wall to wall people when it did.  Back up wood stoves re-appeared quickly after that.

ONLY GOD CAN NOT FAIL! BUT EVERYTHING in His Word WILL come to pass…even…the uncomfortable parts.

So I told my banker that I believed The Scriptures and I wasn’t about to take a mark when the Cybernet crashes. There will be no way to buy and sell and feed all of the people on the earth without some easy ID that can’t be stolen or counterfeited. And then  the mark is introduced. I don’t mean to sound weird, but it just finally seems very POSSIBLE!

And since He did tell us about it, I believe it.   And interestingly the bank person may have thought that I was weird to not have a credit card or smart phone, he DIDN’T think that I was weird for believing the Scriptures.  Interesting!

SO WELCOME 2019!

With all of the unknowns, God has already been there and walked each path (yours and mine) and He knows how to keep each one of us, so I PRAY that our faces are upturned and our hearts are tender and hearing.

God bless and keep each one of you.  May He be glorified in us as we walk ahead.

Lovingly,

your sister J

Politicians, False Prophets and Jesus (Part 2)

Global Warming

It may be hard to believe now, but in the 1970s, the scientific community was concerned about the earth sliding into a new ice age. Studies show that 65% of the scientific papers written in that time period supported this global cooling theory.

The Smithsonian Museum even had one entire wall charting the cooling of the earth over the last sixty million years. The chart on the twenty feet of plastered fresco showed no significant warming periods in its downward arc.

But in 1988, NASA scientist James Hansen testified before Congress and presented scientific weather models. He stated, “I am 99% sure that global warming is upon us now.”

Hansen’s words propelled America and other nations to jump onto the global warming bandwagon. The UN then created the the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to provide a scientific view on climate change and its political and economic impacts.

The IPCC predicted severe heat waves, droughts, powerful hurricanes, the melting of massive glaciers at both poles, causing sea levels to rise between 11 and 38 inches, enough to swamp many of the cities along the American coasts.

These dire predictions moved forty-one nations and the European Union to adopt the Kyoto Protocol in 1997. President Clinton signed the protocol, but President Bush backed away from the agreement when he became president in 2001.

All of the global warming talk would have died out except for Al Gore appearing on the scene with his documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” in 2006. The former Vice President’s documentary won two Oscars, made him a multimillionaire and pushed Gore to the forefront as the spokesman for global warming.

Today, 97% of climate scientists agree that there is a global warming trend and that human beings are the main cause–that is, that we are over 50% responsible.

Oh yeah! What happened to the wall in the Smithsonian Museum?

It was painted over with a new chart, supporting global warming as a truth.

What does the Bible say about global warming?

Radical Democrats, Leftists and Socialists are our Thorns in the Flesh

Democratic National Convention

Have you ever wondered what was Paul’s thorn in the flesh?

There have been many suggestions, but my best guess is that it was the Jews, who constantly hunted him down and tried to kill him. The Jews certainly fit the description of a messenger of Satan who buffeted or treated him with violence.

Yet, look what the Apostle Paul wrote a year or so after he wrote his letter to the Corinthians:

For my people, my Jewish brothers and sisters, I would be willing to be forever cursed—cut off from Christ!—if that would save them. (Romans 9:3)

Even though the Jews may have been Paul’s thorn in the flesh, he loved them, felt they were his missionary field and was willing to die for them.

So, I believe we Christians need to look with Paul’s eyes at radical Democrats, leftists, socialists and others, who are trying to destroy the Christian heritage of our nation. We need to view them as our missionary field and be willing to die for them.

That is — if we want to love like Paul did, which if you think about it, is how much Jesus loved each of us when He took our places on the cross.

Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas. I am taking the holiday season off. See you in January.

Is the Upcoming Civil War our Prep for the End-times? (Part 9)

During the American Civil War, there were denominational church splits for Methodists, Presbyterians, Anglicans, Lutherans, Baptists and others. Today’s Southern Baptists are carryovers from the Baptist church splits of that era.

These denominational splits were the results of slavery. The northern parts of the denominations were against slavery while the southern ones were deeply embedded in the slave-owning society.

The main holdouts were the Quakers.

Although many American Quakers once owned slaves, they realized that slavery was a sin by the early 1800s and refused to have anything to do with it again. Not only were the Quakers anti-slavery, but they were also pacifists. These attitudes caused the Southern Quakers heavy persecution during the Civil War. Their land was stolen, their livestock taken, many were thrown in jail, and on and on, their troubles continued.

In the midst of the Quakers’ darkest days of persecution, Southerners joined the denomination and became known as War Quakers. Think about this for a moment: people joined the Quakers so they could share in the persecution. Only God could make something like that happen!

It’s my belief that the Lord used the Quakers as lights to the Southerners during the Civil War. Like the church of Smyrna in the Book of Revelation, the Quakers were tested for their beliefs, but they had spiritual ears to hear what the Spirit was saying to their churches at that time in American history.

Could this happen in today’s upcoming American civil war? Could God raise up groups that would go against the grain on one side or the other?

If we view the political landscape right now, a majority of Evangelical Christians lean toward the Republican Party. But most black American Christians have joined the remaining Evangelical Christians in the Democratic Party.

Depending on how the civil war might break out, we could easily end up having Christians fighting Christians, with each feeling they are obeying God at the same time.

It’s my belief the Lord is raising up believers right now who are waiting for the Lord to send them to LA, San Francisco, Portland, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York and other cities to raise up a standard for God in these places. Their loyalties will not be to political parties, denominations or sides in the civil war, but to the King of kings.

These groups of believers will suffer extreme persecution, but they will stand firm and force many to make a choice between God’s ways and man’s ways. But even so, this is according to scripture.

All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:8

Inside Israel

Once again, it’s time to hear from our sister in Jerusalem about what she is witnessing there as a believer in Yeshua. Put your prayer shawls on and pray for Israel and Sister J. Now here she is —

“When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests, the Levites, bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it.  Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure. Do not come near it, that you may know the way by which you must go, for you have not passed this way before.”  Joshua 3:3-4

Greetings, dear sisters and brothers,

May The Lord be seen, glorified  and blessed, and may you be blessed and edified toward Him alone.

I have been much impressed over the years by the fact that the prophets, the fiery prophets, prophesied NOT during times of great darkness but generally during times of spiritual prosperity.  Isaiah prophesied during the days that, among others, Hezekiah was king.   Jeremiah prophesied during the days of Josiah.

I could go on, but what struck me about this is that it is HARD to hear the message “repent or else” while we think that we are okay, especially  while we are seeking The Lord, praying, reading, obeying.  When it feels to us as if The Lord is blessing, hearing us and answering and we are walking in fellowship. Then all of a sudden, we hear rumblings of “Seek The Lord now or else!”

Sometimes we can feel uncomfortable, condemned and even get angry. “Who do you think you are?”

What a time we live in, and we CERTAINLY have not passed this way before!

I’m sure that it has been with horror that we have all read the reports of the California fires in Paradise. The descriptions remind me of nuclear war, people overtaken by flames and incinerated instantly.  It is difficult to grasp. Everywhere we turn there are reports of great human suffering and we don’t really know if it has always been this way. Or has social media accessmagnified it through bombarding us moment by moment. But no matter what, it is indeed snowballing before our eyes.

Here in Israel we are also experiencing nonstop fiery dilemmas.   I have described the fires in the South set by incendiary balloons and kites.  It looked as if it was going to burst forth into a full-fledged conflagration last week when some 450 rockets and missiles were fired at us from Gaza. One person was killed (ironically, a Palestinian man) when a rocket collapsed a building in our southern city of Ashkelon. There were quite a number of injured during the 1.5 or so days of fighting, which then suddenly stopped.

Yes, it was very intense.

The media and the politics appear to be in a free-fall at the moment.  Our Minister of Defense’ Avigdor Lieberman, resigned in the face of our government accepting a cease fire (again) with Hamas.  It appears most likely that we will have to go to early elections as the government is collapsing in the light of the pull out of Avigdor Lieberman’s party from the coalition form of government that we have.  Our word belegan (total mish mash of confusion and mess) seems to apply to the situation before us as Hamas laughs and states that “this has been nothing compared with what we have planned for Tel Aviv.”

And yet I believe that our leaders are not stupid. The rumblings in the north (Syria, Lebanon, Iran…) are serious.  There are plans going on of which we know nothing…

But I have always been arrested by the verse above in Joshua 3:3-4… Step back! Leave a space! You have never passed THIS WAY BEFORE!

Many people feel as if they know what will happen.  I do not.  One thing I do know:  This is much bigger than I am, and I can/MUST bring it all before The God Who IS bigger than ALL.  To do that effectively I need to heed the cry of the prophets to repent fully before our Holy God.

I am telling you nothing new, and nothing that you don’t know until this point, but I will lighten up. I DO have some local stories to share.

So here is a story:

Last night was Friday night, erevn Shabbat (the evening of Shabbat, when Shabbat enters.  Saturday night is motze Shabbat- when Shabbat leaves).  We have been blessed to have our younger daughter and family back in the land for the past more than 2 years already, and as they only live two blocks away, they join us for most erev Shabbat meals: the festive meal.

I have shared before a bit about our son in law who was born here, the oldest of 14 in a Haradi (ultra orthodox ) family from French Algerian background.  He is a sweetheart and I have learned a lot of traditions from him that are different from those that I was raised with in New York City, America.

Last night our 4.5 year old Granddaughter Maya said, “In the shuk today a man gave me a yummy birthday present.”  She smiled broadly.

“But Maya,”  I said, “It isn’t your birthday.”

Yitzhak (our son in law) said, “No.  But it was HIS birthday.  That is how you are SUPPOSED to do it.  You have to bless OTHERS when it is your birthday because you have gotten the BIG blessing of your life on the day when you are born.  You are already blessed with the biggest gift so you need to bless others on your birthday.”

Maya added, “Abba and I went to the shuk and this man gave me a bag full of sweet things and nice things and blessed me.”

I asked, “How old was this man?”

Yitzhak answered, “He said that it was his 85th birthday and he was handing out bags of goodies to everyone at the shuk”’

I smiled and thought of Meir Slama who was the first one that I knew of at my work who came to me with a beautiful box of expensive handmade chocolates and flowers and told me that it was his birthday. I was taken aback.

When we first made Aliyah, it was common to be on the bus and a girl or boy would pass around goodies and tell everyone it is their 16th or 18th birthday. I was so touched as they shared but I didn’t understand the depth of the tradition.

I thought back a few years and remembered again, older people at the shuk, passing around goodies and flowers on the occasion of their birthday. It began to fall into place.  “You need to bless people because you have been blessed with life.  They have it backwards in the west where people get gifts on their birthdays.  You have to GIVE.”

I remembered visiting Maya’s gan (pre-school) for her birthday party and remembered how our daughter had to bring 30 little gifts and packages to give to all of the other children.

Huh!  I think that I like this tradition.  At my husband’s birthday dinner, Yitzhak had told him that he should go around and give each one a blessing. It was a special time as he did just that and we were all edified.

It is a good tradition with its roots in truth, but it is still a tradition.

I  feel challenged today to cut away the nice things of my life and get to the raw part. Let God deal as deeply as He did the day that I met Him because the time is short. Even so, I have not passed this way before.

In my last letter I described the march of the young people from the south saying that they had had enough of “red alerts” and fires.  That was just a few short days before the whole south blew up into a full-fledged battlefield.  It was also just before our Mayoral runoff elections about which the word that was in my heart was either the sons of Greece or the sons of Zion (Zechariah 9:13).

The religious candidate won over the secular candidate.  How strange that that was all just one week ago.  It really feels as if it has been years!

May we be found in HIS Peace gazing at Him, abiding in Him, as time and this world continue to run.    And as it runs, may we sit at His feet.  And as we are at His feet may we sing blessing and honor and glory and praise unto HIM WHO ALONE IS WORTHY, Whose Name is The Word of God (Rev. 19:13).

Lovingly,

your sister J
