Prayers for America (9/21/2017)

11160680_10202970551704040_6853963304935390655_n

The Lord carried the prophet Ezekiel to a valley of death and sat him down there. All around the prophet were dry human bones scattered everywhere. The Lord said to Ezekiel –

Son of man, can these bones live?” (Ezekiel 37:3)

Ezekiel wisely answered –

O Sovereign LORD, you alone know the answer to that.” (Ezekiel 37:3 NLT)

Then, the Lord said to Ezekiel –

“Prophesy to these bones, and say to them, ‘O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! ‘Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: “Surely I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live.” (Ezekiel 37:4-5)

The dry bones represented Israel and its dead hopes while the nation was in exile. The prophecy revealed God’s plans to restore Israel and His people.

My prayer today:

Lord, raise up believers who are anointed by You to prophesy life to the cities of America, especially San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, Portland, and Seattle.

What do you think and has the Lord spoken to you today?

Join with me on Thursdays to fast and pray for America.

Inside Israel

SHUK

The Shuk in Jerusalem

Once again, it’s time to hear from our sister in Jerusalem about what she is witnessing there as a believer in Yeshua. Put your prayer shawls on and pray for Israel and Sister J. Now here she is —

Greetings with grace and mercy in The Blessed Name of our Lord, Yeshua h’meshiach.

May HE be glorified and blessed and may HE anoint my small offering that you may be encouraged and blessed.

Rosh h’shana is here, beginning on Wednesday at sundown.  How in the world did the beginning of the Fall feasts creep up on us so quickly?

Tourists are already flocking into Jerusalem from all over the world. Among them, many are Christians who come to attend one of any number of prayer conferences and convocations held during the hagim (holidays). Rosh h’shana is the first.

The Scriptural commands concerning Rosh h’shana are as follows:

“Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a sabbath-rest, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation.  You shall do no customary work on it; and you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord.” (LEVITICUS 23:24-25)

“And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work. For you it is a day of blowing the trumpets.  You shall offer a burnt offering as a sweet aroma to the Lord: one young bull, one ram, and seven lambs in their first year, without blemish.” (NUMBERS 29:1-2)

Also, I personally believe that PSALM 81  is a deep revelation of this feast day. Perhaps, it was written as a worship and meditation for this holiday, which in the Hebrew is called Yom Teruah ‫יום תרועה ” or literally “the blowing of the shofar.

“Blow the trumpet at the time of the New Moon,  At the full moon, on our solemn feast day.  For this is a statute for Israel, A law of the God of Jacob.” (Psalm 81-3-4)

So, why in the world is Rosh h’shana (or the “head of the year”) celebrated as the Jewish New year when the Scriptures clearly tell us that the first day of PASSOVER is to be the “head of the year” for us??

I have no idea!

I have mentioned this many times in the past and have asked many rabbis. I have read a number of commentaries (thank you google) and find no reasonable or convincing answer. TRADITION in this context seems to me to have overruled God’s command, but I will leave that one to others as far as this letter is concerned.

The signs of the fall feasts are in the air.

Since the first day of this month of Elul, which will change to the month of Tishrai at Rosh h’shane, the wonderful blasts of the shofar (ram’s horns) have resonated early in the morning in the synagogues. The horns can be heard throughout the neighborhoods, calling the people to prayer and repentance in preparation for these 3 fall feasts: Rosh h’shana, Yom kippur (the day of atonement) and finally Sukkot (Feast of tabernacles).

I love the shofar blast. It sends chills down my spine, Somehow, it is not quite earthly, or perhaps it calls to mind the call from heaven, a sound bridge between heaven and earth.  I LOVE IT!

As I ride the bus and train early in the morning, there is a new crowd.  Those on their way to the Western Wall of the Temple in the Old City for early morning prayers while those heading to work are reading and praying through the Psalms or other prayer book portions, seeking to prepare their hearts.  In many cases, they do it in sincerity.

When I get off of the train at the shuk to continue my way to work. This is now my exercise walk, which takes about a half hour. It adds extra prayer and worship time for me. Many local tourists are crowding the coffee stands and bakeries for an early morning snack.

It is a long standing tradition for the secular, or the inquiring, to visit the old synagogues in the area of the shuk during this season of repentance, to learn and to taste what they normally distain. Perhaps it’s not unlike the crowds that often attend church at Christmas and Easter only.

And now the seasons have indeed changed and the fall feasts are feasts of the ingathering and harvest, the abundance that God has provided is evident.  Grapes the size of plums, all colors and sizes, pomegranates, apples, the new tangerines (Clementine) – green skinned and tart – boughs of new still-yellow dates – dried figs and nuts. What abundance to thank God for!  And, the apples and honey, the symbol of Rosh h’shana.

“Shana tova omevorach omitokah.” (May you have a blessed and sweet new year) This is the greeting.  Honey cakes are baked (I bake mine with apples and almonds, sort of putting it all together) and shared.  Small gifts are given in thanksgiving.

Today I had an appointment at the hospital (Hadassah Ein Kerem) and some young religious girls handed me a lovely little box on which was written “shana ova” with a small honey cake inside.  What a nice way to lighten hospital visits.

And looking around the hospital made me think of you all again, wondering how I could describe this phenomenon that seriously defies words, wondering how I could fit it into a letter about Rosh h’shane, but the little gift cake bridged it for me, because Hadassah Ein Kerem IS a wonder indeed and not like any hospital you have ever seen.

It stands a fortress on a small mountain of its own, built into the rock. I have heard that it is built to withstand nuclear attack, which would not surprise me.  It’s history is worth reading, if any of you would take the time to google it.

It boasts Chagall windows (the famous artist Marc Chagall) and a piano in the main new entry way that someone is always playing. Sometimes an entire orchestra sits there to soothe the patients and doctors alike.  Yes, the patients and Doctors — Arab, Jewish, Druzim, Bedouin, Religious, Secular, foreign, Iraqi, African, and South American. Both doctors AND patients represent all of these groups and more.

The hospital is so huge that no one can find their way around it anymore. I’ve heard that even the doctors get lost if they have to venture into an area they are unfamiliar with, but a kind and friendly hand will always help you find your way.  It has a full service shopping mall, hotel, post office, bank, and heliport. It is a major research center and a leading medical university.

It is built above ground and below ground.  In my opinion, the workers there are kind. If you are ever here, I ENCOURAGE you to avail yourself of a tour of this unique place.  As I was weaving my way through it today, I was thinking how this place was a world within a world, a full service city. But you know what?  The people milling around in a leisurely manner are DIFFERENT.  Some are wearing pajamas, some have I.V.s in their arms and no hair (chemo), some are wearing face masks (transplants), some are pushing tiny Baby buckets loaded with newborn Babies, and others are pushing strollers where small ones are also receiving chemo.

AND MANY BELIEVING NURSES AND DOCTORS WORK HERE.  WHAT A PLACE!  And no one seems to take notice who is wearing a Jewish head covering or a Moslem one or bandages, or no head covering at all…hair or not.

But I’m digressing.  I DO get carried away because in my eyes I want to shout:  Come and see what GOD HAS DONE!

And that brings me again to Tamima Ben Tsvi.

I have spoken of her much over the years.  I love Tamima. Her name means “the simple purity of God.”  She was in the Doctor’s office where I worked several days ago, and we were speaking about our roots.

The newest secretary, Mirav had never heard Tamima’s story.  I was honored to hear yet another portion that I hadn’t heard before.  We had spoken often about her experience when Jerusalem was liberated.  She was very poor and her family lived in a small room built against the Old City walls.

So in 1967, when the fighting was fierce, it was often happening right over their heads.  She had told me that when she heard our soldiers entering the Old City, she ran out of her hiding place and followed them in.  With amazement I listen to her.  But this time I learned that her family was from Iraq and that they left forcibly and with nothing, although they had been wealthy there.  They traveled by foot. She was just a tiny child.

The winter that they arrived Israel was still destitute and they lived in tents, but it turned out to be the coldest and snowiest winters on record — that and the following one.  It was decided by the government that the children could not survive these winters in tents in such poor conditions. So all small children were taken to kibbutzim to be cared for.  Tamima did not yet know Hebrew but she learned by hearing and was warm and cared for during those 2 winters.  She spoke of the loving care given to the children by those who weren’t really much older than they were.  And then we spoke of the wonder of the country growing out of such beginnings.

The wonder of the abundance!

The wonder of the blessings!

The wonder of Israel just BEING again…after 2,000 years!

And so, as the shofar sounds loud and clear on Wednesday night and throughout Thursday. My prayer is that we will HEAR and HEED and LISTEN TO and OBEY the call from heaven;

TO REPENT.

TO REMEMBER.

TO BE THANKFUL TO THE LORD WHO KEEPS HIS WORD.

He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:24)

God bless you and thank you SO MUCH for your prayers,

Lovingly,

your sister J in  Jerusalem

Prayers for America (9/14/2017)

11160680_10202970551704040_6853963304935390655_n

The Apostle Paul was walking through the streets of Philippi, heading to a prayer meeting by the river. A young slave girl met him on the street and began stating, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.”

The words sound accurate, right?

And if this happened today, most believers would proclaim her to be a prophet. She would then be on TV, radio, writing books, and totally accepted by most churches.

Yet, nothing could be further from the truth because the slave girl had a spirit of divination and made her owners wealthy from her fortune-telling.

Paul was greatly annoyed by the words spoken by the slave girl. He didn’t want a lying demon proclaiming his ministry and then leading people down a wide path to Hell. He wanted the Holy Spirit to convict people of their need for a Savior, leading them to salvation.

My prayer today:

Lord, give American believers a love for the truth so that we are not deceived by Satan’s power, signs, and lying wonders. (Based on 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10)

Prayers for American Christians’ Eyes to be Opened (9/12/2017)

If you disagree with President Obama, you’re branded a racist.

If you agree with President Trump, you’re branded a racist and a sexist.

If you disagree with same-sex marriage, you’re branded a homophobe.

If you disagree with global warming (now called climate change), you’re branded as a denier.

Hey, what’s with all of this labeling?

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. (Ephesians 6:11)

This is a shaming strategy of Satan to shut the mouths of Christians from speaking truth and preaching the gospel to our neighbors, friends, and other Americans. We need to understand that this type of persecution will not go away and will only intensify in the future.

It’s up to each believer to determine his or her commitment now.

My prayer today:

O Lord, help believers to prepare our minds for action and to be sober-minded, setting our hope fully on the grace that will be brought to us at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (Based on 1 Peter 1:13)

What do you think and has the Lord spoken to you today?

If God Loves us, Why do we Still Suffer? (Part 5)

We Evangelicals major on talking about “being born again,” but do you know how many times our Lord spoke on this issue? Just one time. Period.

Yet, there are more than thirty instances in the four Gospels where Jesus cast out demons, gave power to His disciples to cast out demons, or taught about casting out demons.

Now, how is it that we Evangelicals can talk for hours about the importance of being “born again,” but yet, we draw blanks when it comes to casting out demons?

So that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes. (2 Corinthians 2:11)

Paul wrote the above verse in reference to a man who had committed sexual immorality with his father’s wife. The apostle recommended that the man be delivered to Satan for the destruction of the man’s flesh. Then, the man repented and Paul recommended the man should be accepted back into the fellowship.

But the important point is this: Satan has schemes and plans to destroy the effectiveness of us believers.

Okay, who benefits the most by us believers not being able to cast out demons? The Kingdom of God? Or the kingdom of darkness?

But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. (Matthew 12:28)

It’s obvious that if we believers do not understand how to cast out demons, the kingdom of darkness rejoices at our ignorance. Why? Because our power and authority in Jesus’ name bows impotent before the god of this world: Satan.

Oh dear! What should we do?

(The above is taken from my 9-part series, “Do We Still Cast Out Demons,” which can be seen in its entirety here.)

Christians suffer many needless defeats because we do not know how to use our authority to defeat Satan and his horde of demons. We need to remember that Jesus won the victory at the cross, but we still must enforce it.

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (James 4:7)

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith… (1 Peter 5:8-9)

As believers, it’s our responsibility to take authority over demons and cast them out. God will not do it for us because He has given us the tools to do it.

Mike Bickle has a great teaching on the authority of believers which can be seen as a video format or read in a PDF format here.

The king of Syria was upset that his war plans were continually being preempted by Israel. “Do we have a spy in our midst?” he asked.

“The prophet Elisha hears your secrets and tells the King of Israel,” an aide replied.

The king then ordered his army to go to Elisha’s hometown of Dothan, surround it, and capture the prophet.

Elisha’s servant arose early that morning and saw the Syrian army surrounding the city with horses and chariots. He ran to Elisha. “Alas, my master, what shall we do?”

Elisha answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

Then Elisha prayed and said:

“LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. (2 Kings 6:17)

My prayer today:

Lord, open American believers’ eyes so we can see that You and all of heaven’s armies are waiting to answer our prayers.

Spiritual Warfare in San Francisco (Part 7)

King Nebuchadnezzar reigned over Babylon (605 – 562 BC) and defeated all of his many enemies, including Assyria and Judah. The powerful king was a ruthless, ambitious ruler, but in 582 BC, he had a dream that frightened him.

Nebuchadnezzar called for his magicians, enchanters, astrologers, and fortune tellers to come to his court and interpret the dream for him. They could not do it.

Then, the king called for Daniel (also known as Belteshazzar in the Babylonian language). Daniel came and interpreted the dream by saying that the king would be driven from his throne by a unique madness, live in the fields, eat grass with the animals for seven years, and remain that way until King Nebuchadnezzar understood that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom He chooses.

Daniel then said:

“Therefore, O king, may my advice be pleasing to you: break away now from your sins by doing righteousness and from your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor, in case there may be a prolonging of your prosperity.” (Daniel 4:27)

The prophet Daniel’s advice to the king mirrored the words of John the Baptist and Paul the Apostle when both said, “Repent, turn to God, and perform deeds in keeping with your repentance.”

Daniel did not guarantee that King Nebuchadnezzar would be able to avoid God’s judgment by following his advice, but felt God might lessen His judgment against Nebuchadnezzar if the king repented.

Of course, we know by reading the rest of the Daniel Chapter 4 that Nebuchadnezzar turned a deaf ear to Daniel’s advice and went through a seven-year judgment, but in the end the king said:

Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are right and his ways are just; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble. (Daniel 4:37)

I believe the city of San Francisco is now in the same position as Nebuchadnezzar when Daniel spoke his prophecy and advice to him.

Prayers for America (7/20/2017)

11160680_10202970551704040_6853963304935390655_n

Flames and smoke engulfed the colonial home. On the second floor, the husband held his two-year old daughter in one arm while he kicked the window open. Glass exploded outward, falling onto the stone patio, twenty-five feet below. His wife crowded close to him.

“Help! Help us! Please help,” screamed the husband, looking over his shoulder at the flames burning through the bedroom door.

A neighbor quickly appeared on the patio below with a long extension ladder.

“Thank God. You’ve heard my pleas,” screamed the husband.

“Could you please answer a few questions first?” said the neighbor.

“Like what?”

“Are you a Christian? If so, what kind are you?”

“Yes, I’m a Baptist.” the husband proclaimed. “Please hurry.”

“Don’t worry,” replied the neighbor, “just a few more questions, okay?”

“Please hurry!”

“Do you speak in tongues?”

“No. The flames are coming through the door.”

“So far, I like your answers. Do you believe in dispensationalism?”

“Not sure. Hurry.”

“Hmm! That’s not good. It shows lack of study on your part,” said the neighbor, “Oh well, let’s move on. Are you a member of a missional church or the emergent movement?”

“Yes,” shouted the husband, looking over his shoulder at the flames climbing the walls.

The neighbor shook his head. “I ain’t helping someone who might believe the Bible is not the inerrant word of God,” said the man, turning and walking away with his ladder.

Of course, the above story is silly, right?

But we do this sort of thing all the time in our churches and think it is okay there.

I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some. (1 Corinthians 9:22)

For most of us, this first hurdle will be a tough one to jump over because we have spent our whole lives collecting Christian labels, much like a Boy Scout earns merit badges.

Our labels include: Baptist, Methodist, Assembly of God, Pentecostal, Charismatic, Catholic, Anglican, Dispensationalism, Reform, tongues, prophecy, Word of Faith, missional, emergent, Republican, Democrat, Independent, Conservative, Liberal, Red Letter, simple church, nondenominational, and thousands more.

But if you really want to help your neighborhood and city survive upcoming catastrophes, then you need to rip those labels off your Christian identity cards. These divisive labels will not save one person during a catastrophe, but instead they may hinder your preparation efforts.

So, even if you speak in tongues three hours a day or can walk on water across the San Francisco Bay or can raise the dead by snapping your fingers or have memorized the whole Bible from Genesis to Revelation, be quiet and don’t mention it. Be the humble servant who is comfortable with just being a Christian.

Do not forsake your own friend or your father’s friend, nor go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity; better is a neighbor nearby than a brother far away. (Proverbs 27:10)

Prayers for American Christians’ Eyes to be Opened (7/18/2017)

dscf1526

Carol and I, along with our friends, Tony and Janelle, moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, in late 1997 to join The Watch of the Lord prayer ministry and to attend All Nations Church. Mahesh and Bonnie Chavda headed both ministries.

Each of us felt the Lord directed us to move there. Our billfolds lacked money and credit cards, but faith filled our hearts, believing God would somehow supply our needs.

We pooled out money together and rented a room with two double beds at the Charlotte Residence Inn. The room contained less than two hundred square-feet of floor space with a kitchenette, two beds, four chairs, table, and a bathroom.

A mortgage financing company hired the four of us as telephone sales reps on our second day in Charlotte. The company paid its employees on a biweekly basis, which meant our first paychecks arrived two weeks later. This posed a problem because we only had enough money for one week of rent at the motel.

Each morning the four of us gathered together and prayed for our finances, as in, “Oh Lord, help! HELP!”

We introduced ourselves to the church and ministry as soon as it was possible. The members said we were the answers to many prophecies spoken to the group about people moving from different parts of America to be a part of the ministry. Their words encouraged us, but our money still dwindled daily because of food and gas.

A couple from All Nations Church invited us to their home for a small group meeting and Christmas party on the last night of our motel rental. The four of us agreed not to mention our dire financial needs to the group, but instead, we were determined to trust the Father, according to Matthew 6:6 −

But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

The married couple lived in a beautiful new two-story home located in a picturesque area with tall pine trees. It had a large living room, three bedrooms, fireplace, two bathrooms, and large kitchen. A perfect place for four needy, soon to be homeless, believers like us.

The meeting began with Christmas songs and prayers, with the group then waiting on the Lord to hear His voice. The group leader broke the silence by turning to Tony and Janelle.

“Do you guys need something?” he asked, looking at them.

Tony and Janelle shook their heads.

“Not really. The Lord is taking care of us,” said Tony.

The group returned to waiting on the Lord, but the leader was not satisfied and again turned to Tony and Janelle.

“I just don’t feel good about your answers. What do you need?”

Tony and Janelle answered again in the same manner.

“The Lord is taking care of our needs. Thanks for asking.”

The leader would not quit. He continued to ask them what they needed.

“Okay, here’s the story,” Janelle finally said, “we’re out of money for rent and groceries starting tomorrow morning. We don’t know where we shall go or how we’ll survive until we get paid next week.”

How do you think these joyous, Christmas celebrating Christians replied to her statement? And remember: it was December and cold outside.

The group’s leader digested Janelle’s statement for a moment. He motioned with his hands.

“Let’s gather around these two couples and pray for them.”

Tony, Janelle, Carol, and I stood in the middle of the living room while ten Christians placed their hands on our shoulders and prayed. They cried out to the Lord with passion for our circumstances.

I cheated a little by keeping my eyes open and watching the group. Oh Lord, I thought, this looks like the sum total of their aid for our needs. If so, I feel like puking all over their carpet for their level of Christianity.

The rhythm of their prayers reached a crescendo and backed off, waiting for someone to speak.

“I see the Lord raining drops of gold on the four of you,” prophesied a woman. “And all you have to do is reach up by faith and grab what you need. Just reach up right now.”

The prayers ended and we sat down again.

What a convenient prophecy, I thought. They actually believe they don’t have to help us in our time of need because of the woman’s prophetic words. Shouldn’t someone ask how much gold we were able to cram into our pockets during the prayers? Why did the Holy Spirit unmask our financial needs? To reveal our lack of faith or to reveal the group’s hypocrisy?

Various Christmas cookies, fudge candies, sandwiches, chips, and potato salad kept the four of us busy after the prayers. We stuffed ourselves and then graciously said our goodbyes and left.
