“Are We There Yet?” (Part 10)

I’m a grace to the nth believer, by which I can’t think of a single way that a truly born again, new creation believer can lose his or her salvation.

Okay, with that in mind, our Hebraic Roots teacher, Pastor Bruce Dowell of Shiloh Messianic Congregation, said something last night that shocked me. “Do you believe every Christian will be invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb? Now, I don’t mean that some believers will lose their salvation, but rather, I mean some may not make the cut to be a part of the Bride.”

I sat there thinking, “Wow! This goes against most evangelical teachings that I’ve heard.”

Pastor Dowell quoted the verses about the ten virgins who took their lamps out to meet the bridegroom –

Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. (Matthew 25:2-4)

The Greek word mōros is translated into our English word foolish in this verse, but it also may mean: “godless or showing lack of reverence or respect for God.”

The same Greek word mōros also appears in Matthew 7:26 –

But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand”

Pastor Dowell then quoted Revelation 12:17 –

The dragon [Satan] was enraged with the woman [Israel] and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

What are the commandments of God? The Torah or the first five books of the Old Testament.

This morning as I studied and meditated on the marriage supper of the Lamb. I came across the following verses –

“Let us rejoice and be glad! Let us give Him glory! For the time has come for the wedding of the Lamb, and His bride has prepared herself — fine linen, bright and clean has been given to her to wear. (Fine linen means the righteous deeds of God’s people.) The angel said to me, “Write: ‘How blessed are those who have been invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb!”‘ Then he added, “These are God’s very words.” (Revelation 19:7-9 Complete Jewish Bible)

We believers have the responsibility of preparing ourselves. You see, we determine the level of godliness we choose to walk in.

And also:

Then, he said to his servants, “The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy…For many are called, but few are chosen.” (Matthew 22:8, 14)

The Bible states there are Kingdom levels that believers choose to walk in by our obedience to God’s commandments or Torah. These levels range from the least to great and the greatest. Will the least be allowed to attend the marriage supper of the Lamb?

I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to take the chance of missing the marriage supper, but rather, I’m going to learn more about God’s Torah and our Hebrew roots.

Thursday’s Prayers for America (11/5/2016)

IMG_0011

“Even the smallest stream believes it’s the one which fills the ocean.” (Country Pastor)

In my thirty years of being a Christian, I’ve been a part of the Charismatic Movement, the Word of Faith Movement, Prophetic Movement, God is Love Movement, Home Church Movement, and now the Hebraic Roots Movement. Each of these movements have helped to restore important truths to the Body of Christ.

Even though the jury is still out on the Hebraic Roots Movement, all of the other movements have had the same flaw in their makeups. Each believed it was the complete answer to all of America’s problems, rather than just being a needed piece of God’s restoration process for His church.

This flaw always ends up in a “We’re right and you’re wrong” attitude among the movements’ members, which no matter how you decorate it, is still pride.

My prayer for today:

Lord, I pray that American believers will all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. (Based on Ephesians 4:13)

What do you think and has the Lord spoken to you today?

Tuesday’s Prayers for Prisoners (11/3/2015)

(The above photo shows a living area at the end of a narrow, short tunnel. It is the only entrance into the slum dwelling.)

Almost 600 million people live in slum conditions in Asia with poorly built houses, almost no basic services, and limited access to clean water. Life is horrible for these slum dwellers, but what’s even worse, 95% of them will die without ever knowing Jesus.

For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? (Romans 10:13-14)

My prayer today:

Lord, unleash an army of believers who will go into the slums of Asia, preaching the gospel to everyone there and baptizing those who believe. I pray also that signs will accompany these preachers so that demons will be cast out, the sick will be healed, and new believers will speak in tongues and prophesy. (Based on Mark 16:15-18)

Join with me on Tuesdays to fast and pray for prisoners in Asia, according to Hebrews 13:3.

Why Asia?

1. 4.4 billion people live in Asia.

2.. 85.4% of world’s unevangelized people live in Asia. (Unevangelized means they may have heard the gospel but have no understanding on how to respond.)

3. The world’s three largest non-Christian religions – Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhists – are based in Asia.

4. Of the 37 countries of the world that are less than 10% Christian, 32 are in Asia. Of the 14 countries, that are less than 2% Christian, 12 are in Asia.

5. 85-90% of unreached people live in Asia. (Unreached means that they have never heard the name of Jesus.) (Operation World: The Definitive Prayer Guide to Every Nation)

Inside Israel

The Shuk in Jerusalem

The Shuk in Jerusalem

Once again, it’s time to hear from our sister in Jerusalem about what she is witnessing there as a believer in Yeshua. Put your prayer shawls on and pray for Israel and Sister J. Now here she is —

Beloved sisters and brothers, Shalom!  It’s a joy to write to you – to think of you and to pray for you.  May we all grow in grace and in the knowledge of The Lord Yeshua h’Meshiach, Jesus the Christ. May what I share glorify Him and may He be blessed and may we all walk in only His Light.

How quickly things change.  As my husband celebrated his 70th birthday this week, it seemed a good time for some introspection.  I see that my life has reflected the contrasts that surround us − constant change as opposed to THE ROCK WHO NEVER CHANGES.  STEADY, STEADFAST, ETERNAL, UNERRING, ALLWISE GOD.  GOD ALMIGHTY, praise HIM. He never grows old or weak or dim of hearing, seeing and thinking.

The current situation literally FORCES me to stare at Him to maintain a semblance of balance.  Everything that we knew as true’\ for the 70 short years of our lives seems to be turning upside down.

Reflection always paves the way to thankfulness and gratefulness when we are His, and so it did today.

The train that I take home from work stops at the Institute for the Blind, and often many blind people get on or off there.  Today I was seated beside the door when a blind man stumbled getting on.  I reached out and took his arm and said “There is a seat here.”

“Where?” he asked.

“Here, sit, beside the door.”

I scooted over and he sat down beside me.  His kippa indicated that he was religious and I felt relieved that he knew I was female from my voice. He couldn’t see me and so he wouldn’t refuse a seat beside me.  Many religious men (or women) refuse to sit beside someone of the opposite sex so as not to be tempted.

I am so thankful to KNOW THE ONE WHO DELIVERS FROM SINFUL FLESH AND CLEANSES MY HEART and that I am free to NOT “beat my flesh” in an effort to keep sin at bay.  (Sorry, I’m digressing.)

The man beside me was middle aged and well dressed.  He began rustling through a brief case and shook his head. “Can I help you?” I asked.

“No…I was in too much of a rush…not patient…and I didn’t make proper order of my things.  It’s my own fault.”

We went on to discuss the preciousness of patience but I began thinking about how much effort it must take for blind people to organize things so that they can know where they can find them. Suddenly I found myself thinking about a testimony that I love: Blind Bartimaeus in Mark 10:46.  No one could stop him from crying out to The Lord, not humiliation or chastening. When The Lord said to him, “What would you have of Me?”

Bartimaeus said, “Lord, that I might receive my sight.”

I suddenly began to think more deeply than ever about what a world of darkness would be like, and I was overwhelmed with such a deep gratitude for the gift of sight.  Thanksgiving welled up in me and I began to thank Him for sight, for hearing, for all of the senses that He blessed us with so that we could experience His creation.  I was only two stops beyond the Blind Institute, so, no, I did not pray for the man right then to see him healed and saved, but I entered my apartment with a full heart.

With the slowing down of attacks (no, they haven’t stopped but are drizzling in at 1-3 daily right now), Israel has again been bestowed with the world’s award-banner of “aggressor”, “the cause of all evil,” “the stubborn, intransigent source of the Mideast problem,” and “the one who needs to give more to placate.” Although the most liberal and self-hating among us is still scratching his head, wondering how the international community could have come up with the latest “wicked-award” for Israel.

Nonetheless, we are left as a nation grappling with the pressure of the constant accusations.  They give way to ugly bickering within and blaming politically.  It all serves our ancient enemy well, to see the nation beaten from outside and inside.

Attrition is a tactic and a powerful weapon.

Here are some dictionary definitions:

Attrition:   the act of rubbing together;  friction; also :  the act of wearing or grinding down by friction :  the act of weakening or exhausting by constant harassment, abuse, or attack (a war of attrition); the act or process of weakening and gradually defeating an enemy through constant attacks and continued pressure over a long period of time.

Yep.  That describes it well.  That’s just how it feels and it is what I see written in the deepening lines on the faces of those around me.  Arafat said many years ago, that they wanted to wage a war of attrition against us.  So they are doing it.

“And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” (Daniel 7:25)

Is this the season that we live in?  Maybe. From my vantage point it appears so.  Nonetheless I think of His many promises HE has given to us, to give strength to the weary, and His exhortations to persevere till the end. I know that He is able to keep those who are His own who look to Him for that keeping.

Following a particularly hot and dry Autumn, winter fell on us last week.  Floods still grip the center of the country with massive power outages ongoing for some four days now. I know that many of you are also experiencing extreme weather conditions where you are.

We are hearing from around the world of things similar to what we saw here this week with baseball sized hail in some places. An Air Canada plane was hit by lightning and forced to land in Cyprus while entire towns are under water.  As the earth sighs and heaves, and man staggers under the weight of it all, a dear local sister made this wonderful observation last week during the upsurge in terror:

‫”To say things have been tense in Jerusalem lately would be an understatement. Today, while waiting for my bus, I saw and heard something that lifted my spirits. I heard the music before I saw its source − a vehicle that looked as if it came straight out of the hippie era of the sixties with a pair of huge speakers mounted on the roof of its cab. When it was about a block away from where I stood, the light turned red. Out jumped about four young men (including driver) who began dancing in the street. I began to smile at the infectiously cheerful music and the sight of the young men dancing with wild abandon. All too quickly the light changed, the men jumped back in their van and drove up the street to spread their joy at another intersection. No, the music won’t solve the complex situation here but it did remind me of the resiliency of the Jewish people who have returned to their Land after thousands of years. They are here to stay.

‫    ” עם ישראל חי  (it says ‘Am Yisrael chai’ or the nation/people of Israel live!)

And that says it all really.  God’s plan…God’s purposes…God’s way…ALL for God’s glory.  I have no doubt that as we worship Him in the midst of problems, we will have all the strength that we need to walk all the way to the end….whether it is you or me…your path or mine…as long as we are on HIS path, He will do it.

Having so much more to say, I will close and begin dinner.  Work has been very difficult with the added stress. It takes a toll on people’s health and they often end up at the doctor’s office and in the waiting room.  May we each shine with His Light in the “waiting room” in which we serve, because we really ARE all serving Him in some “waiting room” or another.

Thank you for praying for this nation and its people according to His Word for His purposes, and thank you for remembering my family and the other believers here.

Lovingly,

your sis J

“Are We There Yet?” (Part 9)

The Two-Covenant Theology was pioneered in this century by the non-Messianic Jewish philosopher Franz Rosenzweig (1886-1929), and since elaborated by such liberal Christian theologians as Reinhold Niebuhr and James Parkes. This theory holds that the Jewish people were brought close to God by means of the covenant with Avraham (Abraham) and the Torah of Moshe (Moses), so that they have no need to “come” to the Father through Yeshua (Jesus) or anyone else, because they are already with Him. Accordingly, Yeshua’s word is not for the Jews, but for the Gentiles and is to be understood thusly: “I am the way, the truth, and the life; and no Gentile comes to the Father except through Me.”

The Two-Covenant theory enables the Jewish Community to live in apparent peace (from its point of view) with its Christian neighbors by alleviating the pressure on Judaism to downgrade Jesus, the New Testament, and Christianity; for a non-Messianic Jew can say, “We Jews have our way, Judaism; and you Gentiles have your way, Christianity. We will each serve God best by following the way provided for us. It is a manifestation of God’s grace that He has provided Jesus for you Gentiles and Torah for us Jews.” Thus Jesus can be held in high regard because His claims are not taken as posing any threat to the structure of non-Messianic Judaism. (Excerpt from Jewish New Testament Commentary by David H. Stern, 1992, Jewish New Testament Publications, p. 196-197)

However, this whole theory falls to pieces when you consider that Jesus (Yeshua) was a Jew and mainly preached His Gospel of the Kingdom of God to Jews. All of the early evangelism was done by Jews and focused on Jews with the message being, “Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Jesus.” (John 14:6)

Paul the Apostle stated:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” (Romans 1:16-17)

Jews and Gentiles alike need a Savior named Jesus (Yeshua).

If We Just Ignore Gays, They’ll Go Away, Right? (Part 7)

IMG_1797

In a back and forth discussion, the Pharisees stated that Abraham was their father, but Jesus hit them right between the eyes when He said, “You are of your father the devil [Satan], and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning…and the father of lies.”

Let’s put on our thinking caps for a moment:

Did God create a murderer and a liar when He created Satan?

You [Satan] were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you. (Ezekiel 28:15)

God created Satan as a perfect spirit being that was obviously given a free will of sorts. He eventually used his freedom to sin.

Plus, who could Satan have murdered when he was first created? Not God or the other angels who were also eternal spirit beings.  Man and other animals were not created as yet, leaving no one to murder at the time of Satan’s creation.

Thus, Jesus’ use of the words murderer from the beginning could not refer to when Satan was first created as a spirit being. But rather, it most likely referred to when the evil one sinned and became known as Satan. This probably happened sometime soon after Adam and Eve were created.

Jesus called Satan a murderer. Who did the evil one murder?

And the Lord God commanded Adam, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Genesis 2:16-17)

Without a gun, knife, or club, Satan murdered mankind by relying on God’s integrity to honor His word when he deceived Eve and caused Adam to rebel against God’s revealed word.

For your information: the deception by Satan did not negate Adam’s responsibility to obey God’s words because Romans 12:12 states that sin and death entered into the world through Adam and then spread to all men.

But still and all, we have to realize that the father of lies and the deceiver of mankind is a murderer.

Thursday’s Prayers for America (10/29/2015)

IMG_0011

The vibrant sounds of Mozart’s Piano Concerto Number Seven swirled through the Beacon Hill mansion’s ballroom. The fifteen females seated around the grand piano, listening to the maestro, had proper Brahmin names like Cabot, Coolidge, Forbes, Lodge, or Shaw. Each traced her ancestry back to the earliest Puritan settlers of Boston. This blueblood lineage insured their invitation to the social tea, no nouveau riche Johnny-come-latelies were among the invitees.

When the pianist completed the piece, he stood and bowed. The women showed their appreciation with warm applause. One of the ladies put her white-gloved hands to her mouth and said, “Oh, I would just do anything to be able to play the piano like that.”

The maestro turned and stared at her. His eyes exploded with fire.

“No you wouldn’t,” he said.

The crowd collectively gasped. All felt sorry for the woman who had been openly rebuked by the man’s insensitive words.

As for the lady, she sat stunned, paralyzed by his harsh eyes, tears rolled down her cheeks. Then, as if she remembered her privileged pedigree, she mouthed three defiant words at the pianist: “Yes, I would.”

“No you wouldn’t,” he said again, leaning over the piano toward the lady.

“Because if you really meant what you said, you would have been willing to give up your youth, your teenage years, and eight to ten hours every day practicing on the piano. You see, there is a price to sit on this bench. I’ve been willing to pay it, and you have not!”

Tuesday’s Prayers for Prisoners (10/27/2015)

The first time I heard the term “religious nut” was in the 1950’s when my mom spit those words out of her mouth. It happened when we shopped at Meiners’ Grocery Store in Forreston, Illinois. Mom picked a few items off the shelves and carried them up to the checkout. Lillian Meiners, the cashier, attempted to talk about the Lord to Mom while totaling the purchases on the cash register. It was a one-sided conversation with Mom saying nothing.

“She’s a religious nut!” Mom proclaimed as we walked to our 1955 Pontiac, parked outside the door.

From that day forward, Lillian Meiners personified a religious nut to me. I would often see her and when I did, Mom’s words popped into my mind. Lillian never knew my true feelings about her. It was one of those inner character assassinations I never spoke aloud to anyone.

Lillian’s name was filed on a forgotten corner shelf of my mind until late 1985. It would still be there covered with layers of dust and cobwebs except for the question I asked the Lord one morning during prayer.

“Jesus, why did you save me?”

A clear voice whispered to my heart.

“Because of Lillian Meiners’ prayers for you.”

His words shocked me, but a few years later, I talked with her pastor, Rev. Orin Graff. He told me Lillian was a diligent prayer warrior for kids who attended Bible Camp.

The first saint I am going to hug upon my arrival in heaven will be Lillian Meiners. I want to thank her for faithfully praying for an agnostic who always thought she was a religious nut. We can have a good laugh about my ignorance and how Jesus set me straight.

(Excerpt from The Hunt for Larry Who by Larry Nevenhoven, 2014, Amazon eBook)

“Are We There Yet?” (Part 8)

Señor Luiz introduced himself to our Brazilian Portuguese class at the beginning of my sophomore year at the University of Illinois. He stated that he was from São Paulo, Brazil, and looked forward to teaching us. He then went around the room, asking each student his or her name. When the student mentioned his name, Señor Luiz asked, “Would you mind if I called you  by the Brazilian Portuguese translation of your name?”

Thus, William became Guilherme, Mary became Maria, Edward became Eduardo, and so forth.

After I had told him my name, he said, “Do you mind if I call you Señor Lourenço?”

“I never liked the name Lawrence. So, if it’s okay with you, just  call me Señor Larry,” I said.

He nodded his head and said, “Sim.”

Now, most of us want to be called by the names given to us by our parents. It’s the names which our parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, teachers, and everyone have called us all through our lives. Our names reflect our family heritage and often contain the dreams and hopes pinned on our lives at our births by our parents.

For instance, my wife was named Carol, not Carole. She was born just after the holidays and her mom thought of her as a Christmas carol. Interesting enough, Carol went off to college, studied music, and became a singer.

Okay, what about New Testament names?

This may come as a shock to you, but almost every character in the New Testament has had their names changed. This is due to the fact that our New Testament has been translated from the Greek into the English language. All of the Hebrew and Jewish names have been changed into a Greek form of the same name.

The Greek name – Jesus Christ – was really Yeshua HaMashiach. Mary was Miryam. Joseph was Yosef. Matthew was Mattityahu. Simon Peter was Shim’on Kefa. James was Ya’akov Ben-Zavdai. John was Yochanan. T’oma was Thomas. Judas Iscariot was Y’hudah from K’riot. Saul or Paul was Sha’ul. Barnabas was Yosef or Bar-Nabba.

It was almost as if Señor Luiz went around to each New Testament character and asked, “Do you mind if I call you by a Greek name instead of your Hebrew one?” They, of course, said nothing because they were dead.

Sadly, the name changes removed the Hebrew-ness from our New Testament.

Thursday’s Prayers for America (10/22/2015)

Most people have seen the movie, Titanic, and its fictional love story about a poor boy, Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio), and a rich girl, Rose (Kate Winslet), on an ill-fated ocean voyage. The movie won the 1997 Oscar for Best Picture. Its box-office sales of over $1.8 billion rank it as the second most successful movie of all time, behind Avatar.

Hollywood created its own fictional heroes for the movie script, but on April 14, 1912, there were many real heroes. One of them was named John Harper.

John Harper, a thirty-nine year old widower and a Baptist preacher, was traveling to Chicago aboard the R.M.S Titanic on its maiden voyage with his six-year old daughter, Nana. He was scheduled to preach some evangelistic meetings at the Moody Church.

At 11:40 p.m., the Titanic hit an iceberg on the starboard side of the ship. As soon as Harper realized the ship was going to sink, he took his daughter to a lifeboat and placed her aboard. “Nana, I’ll see you again someday,” he said to her.

Then, while flares lit up the sky, he marched up and down the decks yelling, “Women, children, and unsaved into the lifeboats!”

At 2:20 a.m., a rumble arose from deep within the ship as it broke in half. Hundreds of people, including Harper, jumped into the 28-degree (-2 C) water as the Titanic slipped into its watery grave.

As soon as Harper hit the surface, he frantically swam from one person to the next, leading them to Jesus before the people succumbed to the icy waters and hypothermia. He asked one young man who clutched a piece of wood, “Are you saved?” The young man answered that he was not.

Harper tried to convince the young man, but the man refused to listen. Harper took off his life jacket and threw it at the man. “Here then, you need this more than I do,” said Harper as he swam off to other people.

A few minutes later, Harper returned to the man and successfully led him to Christ. Then, Harper attempted to swim to other people, but the icy waters were too much for him. “Believe on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved,” he shouted before he sank under the waters.

Of the 1528 people that went into the icy waters that night, lifeboats rescued only six. One of them was the young man who later recounted how Harper had led him to Christ.

Harper wasted no time swimming around in the icy waters talking about his Baptist credentials or the five pillars of Calvinism. He asked one question: “Are you saved?” He acted on what was the most important need at that tragic moment on April 14, 1912. Today, like John Harper, we must focus our efforts on what’s needed now.

Yes, there are those who are crossing their fingers and praying for a national revival. And if the Lord sends one, hallelujah, thank You Jesus, I will join in. But I’ve listened to prophecies about a soon-coming revival, which will wash our nation clean of sin for the last thirty years. It hasn’t arrived as yet. So, do we keep walking down the same path for twenty-five or ten or five more years, hoping for a revival?

Not me! I’m jumping off this path and walking on a new one.

(Excerpt from New Wind Blowing by Larry Nevenhoven, 2013, an Amazon eBook)

My prayer for America today:

Lord, I pray that we believers lay down every one of our plans, our hopes, our dreams, our visions, our prophetic words for America, which have ensnared us, so that we can run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith. (Based on Hebrews 12:1-2)

What do you think and has the Lord spoken to you today?

Join with me on Thursdays to fast and pray for America.
