Whats In It F Me1

If you have a Kindle, Kindle Fire, iPad, Nexus, Galaxy, a computer, or smart phone with Kindle apps on it, my e-book novel, What’s In It For Me?, is FREE February 5 – 6, through Amazon.

Amazon Book Description:

Why should we care about Asia? After all, don’t we American Christians have enough problems without adding to our loads? So, what’s in it for me?

Two thirds of the world’s population lives in Asia, with China and India accounting for approximately 60% of the total population. Less than 5% of Asians know the Lord and many have never even heard of Jesus. Thousands of Christians are imprisoned for their faith in China, North Korea, Vietnam, and Laos. Other believers are harassed and murdered. Millions now face starvation with no hope in sight and gendercide is being carried out against females in China and India.

Okay, so what?

“Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.” (Matthew 25:40)

“Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are ill-treated, since you yourselves also are in the body.” (Hebrews 13:3)

“What’s In It For Me?” reveals how helping the least, the Asians and its prisoners, may be divine insurance policies for our own futures, especially us inhabitants on the West Coast.

This book may be one of the most important books any believer will ever read.

“Don’t You Judge Me, Ya Hear!”

dolly 13

“Don’t you judge me, ya hear!”

Right after hearing these words, our knees wobble, mouths dry out, and heads hang down. Then, we Christians slowly sink into our seats.

We’ve been body-slammed by the Matthew 7 catch-all retort used by the media, politicians, activists, atheists,  butchers, bakers, and candle stick makers who hope to justify ungodly lifestyles by using the words of Jesus.

Baloney!

If they hate God, dishonor their parents, murder, commit adultery or fornication, and tell lies, they have already been judged by the Word of God, specifically the Ten Commandments.

Furthermore, if they are involved in abominable sins, such as homosexualty, abortion, or cheating in business, they are also judged by the Word of God.

And guess what?

The verses in Matthew 7 are not a magic “Get Out of Jail Free” card, shielding people from their guilt. If they have committed any of the above sins, the verdicts have already been rendered. They’re guilty. No excuses, alibis, or flippant retorts will help alleviate the judgments against them.

Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye. (Matthew 7:1-5 NLT)

Jesus spoke the above words in Matthew to prepare us – the believers – for helping prisoners in the kingdom of darkness. They’re guilty and need our help. But first, we need to get rid of our own sins.

Our goal is to be able to demonstrate God’s love to them and say, “Friend, let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye.” Because every breakage of the Ten Commandments or abominable sin is just a speck waiting to be washed clean by the blood of Jesus.

Yesterday is gone. So, now is the time for us believers to prepare our hearts for today’s world.

Amazon Book Description:

What is the #1 statement spoken by individuals during large catastrophes?

“I didn’t think this would ever happen to me.”

Why?

They believed catastrophes always happened to someone else, but never to them. And if it did happen, they thought the government would arrive on the scene and rescue them before their cups of coffee turned cold.

If this is your present thinking, then allow me to say one word to smash your ideas to smithereens: Katrina. Yes, Hurricane Katrina, the watershed event when all of us should have learned to never again place our faith in governments to rescue us or our families from catastrophes.

Planning + Preparation = Survival is a no-nonsense book written to show Christians how to pray, plan, and prepare ourselves, our families, and our communities for possible natural and terrorist catastrophes in the near future.

Forty Years Ago Today, I Was an Affable Agnostic

dolly 911

On January 22, 1973, I was an affable agnostic, living in Louisville, Kentucky. The old river city, famous for horse racing and basketball, had a Southern Baptist church on almost every street corner. Yet, I was oblivious to the gospel.

And Roe versus Wade?

If I heard the names at all, I probably thought they were two middleweight boxers, appearing in a big match at the Louisville Gardens. I had no clue the names referred to a Supreme Court ruling.

And abortion?

I obviously knew what the term meant, but I would have never – out of a million guesses – believed that 55,881,922 babies would be aborted in the 40 years following Roe versus Wade.

From that particular January day to May 19, 1985, I viewed Roe versus Wade and abortion with detached apathy. Was I pro-choice or pro-life? My best answer would have been a quick shrug and a fast change of subjects.

But on May 20, 1985, just hours before I planned on committing suicide, I met Jesus on the bathroom floor. Just to think the Lord cared about a man who thought He was, at best, the equal of the Easter Bunny, still blows my mind today.

Because of my eternal about-face, I owe my allegiance to the Lamb.

Since that day on the bathroom floor, I have spent my whole life seeking to know and understand this man named Jesus. I still don’t have all of the answers, even after twenty-seven years, but I am sure of this much: Jesus hates murder.

And no matter how much we dress up Roe versus Wade and abortion by using guilt soothing terms like “pro-choice,”  they still refer to one thing: murdering babies.

I am not confused about this. Are you?

Amazon Book Description:

Deceived Dead and Delivered consists of two short novels, a prophetic allegory, and a few short stories, written especially for believers who are looking for answers to today’s tough questions.

In the first short novel, Pull the Plug, life was perfect for Chuck Brewster until that Easter Sunday in San Francisco when the angel arrived and opened Chuck’s eyes. From then on, Chuck’s new revelations stirred up nothing but trouble…or so his wife and family thought.

The second short novel, Deceived Dead and Delivered, takes place near the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where Daniel and Amanda McCord attend the progressive Jesus Is Love Community Church. Then one morning a new spiritual gift causes Daniel to realize, “demons suck,” and that his church has big problems.

The Great American Church Derby is a prophetic allegory which takes place in a Starbucks with two men drinking coffee. It offers hope to hungry believers who long for a church who truly walks in unity.

The book contains the above, and also a few short stories.

Fiction or revelations? You can decide for yourself after reading Deceived Dead and Delivered.

My e-book, “Prophecy 101,” is FREE Today. Get Your Copy Now!

Proph_101

If you have a Kindle, Kindle Fire, iPad, Nexus, Galaxy, or any computer with Kindle apps on it, my e-book, Prophecy 101, is free on New Years Day and January 2nd through Amazon.

Amazon Book Description:

Do you prophesy? If not, why not?

These may be questions you have not been asked before, or at least, not very often. But did you know that the Apostle Paul asked questions much like these of early Christians? He wanted all to prophesy.

Why?

Prophecy is a gift meant for each of us so we can help other people.(1 Corinthians 12:7 paraphrased)

The Apostle Paul knew the early Christians needed prophecy because of their perilous times. Famines, persecutions, wars, and even shipwrecks awaited many of them so they needed warnings from God. And one of the best ways to do that was through prophecy.

Okay, but what about today’s Christians?

On May 20, 1985, I planned on committing suicide, but a businessman spoke prophetic words to me which ended up saving my life.

As you can probably guess, I am fervent for prophecy and like the Apostle Paul, I believe all should prophesy. You see, just one prophetic word might change your life, a family member’s life, a neighbor’s life, or a stranger’s life. And who knows? Lives might be saved because you prophesy.

Prophecy 101 contains 58 simple lessons that I have learned over the last twenty-seven years on how to prophesy. The book is filled with scriptural and personal examples in a quick reading format.

So, do you want to prophesy? The decision is yours.

Christmas in Nashville With Red Hot Chili

dolly tree

Christmas in Nashville. Don’t the words evoke thoughts of Hank,  Dolly, and country in the grandest sense for the best season of the year?

Now, imagine spending Christmas in Nashville with no money, no jobs, no friends, no relatives, little gas in car, rent due, and no prospects in sight?

That’s exactly the dilemma, Honey and I found ourselves on Christmas Day, 1998. How did we end up in such a mess?

It all began a few weeks earlier in Louisville, Kentucky, the city we had just moved to in September. We had jobs and were settling into the city. But then, we felt the Lord said, “Go to Charlotte and be a part of a prayer community.”

We packed up and headed east.

The prayer group had its exciting moments, but then we felt the Lord said, “Go to Nashville.”

Thus, five days before Christmas, we arrived in Nashville with enough money to rent a studio apartment at the Residence Inn and buy a few groceries.

On Christmas Day, Honey cooked her famous chili for our feast. As far as presents, we had none  and couldn’t even afford to phone family.

To say the least, it was a long-faced holiday for us.

On December 26th, we had to move out, but where? We had no clues.

At 9 AM, I went down to the office for clean towels. The desk manager had just received a Christmas card for us with a check inside it.

Honey and I were so excited, but still we did not have enough money to continue staying at the Residence Inn. We prayed and felt the Lord wanted us to head back to Louisville, Kentucky.

On the way to Louisville, Honey phoned her former boss, asking if he needed a sales person at his furniture store. He said, “Yes and we also have a check waiting for you from the November sales period. You forgot to give a forwarding address.”

Both checks were surprises and allowed us to rent a place in Louisville.

So, why would the Lord supposedly make us jump through all of these hoops?

If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land (Isaiah 1:19)

Willingness and obedience needs to be our life styles, not an every so often event. And God knows just how to uniquely develop these life styles in us.

If You Build It, He Will Come

In the movie, Field of Dreams, a young Iowa farmer named Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) walked through a cornfield and heard voices saying, “If you build it, he will come.” Then, he had a vision of a baseball diamond.

Ray quickly told his wife, Annie (Amy Madigan), about his experience and that he wanted to plow up part of the cornfield and build a baseball diamond. She, of course, was skeptical, but agreed to his off-the-wall dream.

As Ray progressed with his expensive dream, he faced financial ruin. He and Annie talked about replanting the cornfield and giving up on the dream, but his daughter then saw a baseball player on the diamond. It turned out to be Shoeless Joe  Jackson, a dead baseball player idolized by Ray’s father.

From that point on, his wife and daughter were believers in his dream.

Because of hearing other messages from the voices, Ray traveled to Boston and Minnesota to invite two men to be a part of the baseball games. Both ended up coming to the baseball diamond.

Eventually, enough old time ball players, like Shoeless Joe Jackson, showed up at the diamond to play a game. When the game broke up, the players left the diamond and retreated into the cornfield.

Before leaving the ball field, Shoeless Joe Jackson invited the man Ray brought from Boston to go along with him. He accepted the invitation, but Ray also wanted to go. Shoeless Joe, restated the words, “If you build it, he will come.” Then, he pointed toward the catcher, still standing at home plate. It was Ray’s dad.

Ray then played catch with his dad on the diamond, something he had never done when he was a youngster and something he regretted not ever doing. In the background, headlights from thousands of cars could be seen heading toward the ball diamond.

Ray’s faith was vindicated.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17)

Field of Dreams is not necessarily a Christian movie nor do we ever know where the voices are coming from. Yet, the movie perfectly demonstrates how a believer should walk by faith and not by sight.

Ray Kinsella heard the voices, saw the vision, and believed in them. He did not know who the “he” was or how he could possibly afford to carry out the dream, but like a little child, he trusted and acted in the wisdom of the voices.

For me, as a new Christian, almost twenty-six years ago, I believed that the Lord told me I would own a publishing company and would be an author. At the time, I was the president of a small farm publishing company in Iowa.

Now, twenty-six years may sound like a long time until you realize it took eighteen years just to erase all of my marketing ideas, all of my writing ideas, and all of my publishing ideas. These skills took a long while for the Lord to crush and beat to death with my many failures and mistakes.

You see, He has a special plan, one which He reveals just a little bit at a time. Does His plan make sense to me? No, not at all. Yet, I have learned He is the Boss and can be trusted.

A recent conversation with my wife reveals how much I have changed over the years.

“How are your three books selling?” asked my wife.

“Sales are slow,” I said.

“Well, what’s your marketing plan?” she said.

I shrugged my shoulders. “I haven’t got a marketing plan.”

“Don’t you think you should come up with one?”

“I’m not the Boss,” I replied. “So far, the Lord has told me to write and I’m going to continue doing that. If He wants me to do some marketing, He’ll let me know.”

“You know, you sure are a funny guy,” she said.

“Maybe,” I replied, “but I’ve a learned an important lesson over the years and that’s to wait on Him.”

I guess I’m a lot like Ray Kinsella because I believe that if I write, He will come.

Elijah, Come Out of Your Cave! Now! (Part 6)

Click on following links for earlier articles: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 and Part 5.

4 and 5.  The two witnesses.

And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for twelve hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. And if anyone wants to harm them, fire flows out of their mouth and devours their enemies; so if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this way. These have the power to shut up the sky, so that rain will not fall during the days of their prophesying; and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every plague, as often as they desire. (Revelation 11: 3 – 6)

Throughout history, people have speculated about the two witnesses mentioned in Revelation Chapter 11.

The early church believed the two witnesses would be Enoch and Elijah. Their reasoning was that both prophets were taken directly into heaven without first suffering death. Hmm! Maybe.

Many others think the two witnesses will be Moses and Elijah. In this scenario, it would then be a recurrence of the transfiguration with Moses representing the Law and Elijah the Prophets. Hmm! Maybe.

Still others believe the two witnesses will be the Messianic side of the Church and the Gentile side of the Church. Hmm! Maybe.

Since eschatology has never been my forte, I really have no clue exactly who the two witnesses will be, but I do know this: they will be Elijah-types of prophets. Why?

Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. (Malachi 4: 5)

Elijah does first come… (Mark 9: 12)

It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah… (Luke 1: 17)

Then if you look ahead to the end of Revelation Chapter 11, the seventh trumpet is blown and we see the coming of the Lord.

…The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever. (Revelation 11: 15)

As Sherlock Holmes would say to Dr Watson after explaining a mystery, “It was elementary my dear Watson.”

Thus, the two witnesses (also called prophets) have to be Elijah-types of prophets.

But once again, what really sets these two witnesses apart so that they are Elijah-types of prophets?

I’d Like to Prophesy, But… (Part II – 8)

This is a continuation of the nine-part series,  I’d Like to Prophesy, But…

Click on the following links for earlier articles: Part II-1, Part II-2, Part II – 3, Part II-4, Part II- 5, Part II-6 and Part 7.

Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ but do not do what I say? (Luke 6: 46)

Even every secularist knows that we Christians are supposed to love people. In fact, if believers point out that some acts are sins, such as homosexuality or abortion, invariably the secularists’ response is that we are not acting in love, but rather out of hate and hypocrisy.

You would think the only words which the Apostle Paul wrote that were of any value were contained solely in Chapter 13 of 1 Corinthians. But believe it or not, Chapter 13 is snuggled between two other verses:

But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I show you still a more excellent way. (1 Corinthians 12:31)

Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. (1 Corinthians 14:1)

Paul wrote the letter to the Corinthians twenty-five years after the first Pentecost. It was not written as a training manual with chapter and verse numbers like our present day Bibles. But instead, it answered questions and settled problems the church was struggling with at the time of the letter.

So, how did Paul handle the Corinthian church which was totally messed up with their use of the spiritual gifts? Did he tell them to quit prophesying and practicing the spiritual gifts until he arrived in Corinth and retrained everyone?

No. Absolutely not!

Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues. But all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner. (1 Corinthians 14:39 – 40)

Now, why would Paul encourage  the Corinthians to continue prophesying and using the spiritual gifts? The answer is simple.

And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. (Ephesians 1: 22 – 23)

Paul actually believed that Christ was the head of the church and that the Holy Spirit dwelled within the church. Thus Paul believed in the continuing ministry of the Holy Spirit, as stated by Jesus.

Now, if Paul believed in the spiritual gifts, wrote about the spiritual gifts, practiced using the spiritual gifts and encouraged others to use the spiritual gifts as a further work of the Holy Spirit, then why have so many pastors, leaders and theologians ignored the spiritual gifts, especially prophecy?

Once again, the answer is simple and can be given in a one word statement: prophets.

(Continued in Part II – 9)
