Geezer Up (Part 2)

Any syrupy ideas I might have had about jail were erased when the door banged shut to my holding cell. The five young men who sat on the bolted down metal benches, which lined both sides of the cell, followed me with their dark eyes as I sat down in the far right corner. A stainless steel toilet without a lid stood next to a small sink in the middle of the back wall. No privacy here, I thought.

“Hey, old white man, what terrible crime have you committed that the police would lock you up with five MS-13 homies charged with murder?” asked a young man covered with tattoos and wearing a white tank top.

My ears perked up with the mention of MS-13, also known as the Mara Salvatrucha. It’s the most violent gang in the United States with its members known for their cruel murders and merciless revenge.

“I preached the gospel of Jesus Christ to the LGBT parade watchers down in the Castro District. Some became angry and kicked me around like an old football. I was charged with a hate crime.”

“Did you fight back, old man?” asked a short young man with teardrops tattooed under both eyes.

“No, of course, not,” I replied.

The five laughed and slapped each other on the back as if my words were the funniest ones ever spoken.

“Old man, that is hilarious!” said the biggest youth with a large scar on his neck. “You preach the gospel to gays and lesbians. Then they beat and kick the crap out of you, but you don’t fight back. And you’re the one who gets charged with a hate crime. We MS-13 homies understand that type of justice. So, what happened to the gays who did this to you?”

I rubbed my baldhead and shrugged. “I don’t know, but I pray that God won’t hold their actions against them.”

The same youth leaned toward me. “Do you really think God cares about gays and lesbians?”

“Yes, and not only that, He cares and loves you, too.”

“Old white man, now you’ve gone too far.”

The five leaned back and closed their eyes, ignoring my presence.

I sat there, checking myself out. My broken nose hurt. My ribs were sore and all of the other bruises added to my suffering. Blood covered the front of my blue oxford shirt and khaki slacks. Yet, in the midst of my pain and bloody clothing, I wanted to jump and shout and praise God because He counted me worthy to suffer for His name.

“Lord,” I prayed softly, “thanks for giving a seventy-three year old geezer, like me, a second chance to be a part of the action and not allowing me to retire from Your kingdom work. And Lord, use me even more in the days ahead.”

The Lord reminded me of this prayer often in the days following it.

Prayers for Healing and Deliverance (1/24/2017)

2222

The first person I prayed for healing was one of my favorite aunts who was suffering from cancer. I was so positive that the Lord would answer my prayers, but yet she died a few weeks later.

Her death jolted my faith.

At the time, I had been saved for about four months and had been listening to Kenneth Hagin and other Word of Faith teachers. So, I assumed my faith was good enough to move mountains and heal cancer, but it wasn’t!

I ended up driving by myself from Iowa to northern Illinois to attend my aunt’s funeral. On the two-hour trip, the Lord encouraged me to keep on growing, studying, and trusting Him. AND to keep on praying for the sick whenever I had the chance.

This took place almost thirty-one years ago. I still remember the agony I felt in the car, the tears I shed, the failure facing me, and the decision I had to make — whether to keep on praying for healing of the sick or to join the Christian naysayers on the sidelines.

I decided to trust God:

And these signs will accompany those who believe: in My name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover. (Mark 16:15-16)

Over the years, I have seen a few miracles and many deaths, but I know this one thing to be true. At some point, heaven will pour out a greater anointing upon believers and death will be forced to let go of its grip on the people we pray for.

My prayer for today:

Lord, help us believers to honor Your word and promises as much as You do. (Based on Psalm 138:2)

Prayers for America (1/19/2017)

11160680_10202970551704040_6853963304935390655_n

Only believers can make a difference with our nation’s sin, in accordance with −

If my people who are called by My name humble themselves, and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)

This familiar verse is quoted over and over again, especially after a tragedy, but let’s be honest with each other, okay? We must be doing something wrong because it’s not working very well.

Over the years, we have memorized the words and mouthed lip service to 2 Chronicles 7:14, but have paid little attention to the context of why the Lord spoke His words. If we look at verse 12, we will learn that verse 14 was an answer to Solomon’s prayer in 2 Chronicles 6:14-42.

In his prayer, King Solomon prayed about the possibilities of Israel being defeated by enemies, overcome by droughts, famines, pestilences, plagues, and sicknesses and asked the Lord to hear. To hear what? Prayers and supplications.

Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. (Daniel 9:3 NKJ)

In the days of His flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was He heard because of His reverence. (Hebrews 5:7)

Supplications are desperate, passionate, earnest prayers from the deepest part of our hearts, crying out to God for Him to intervene on our behalves. It usually includes weeping, crying, and fasting − that’s really what the verb “humble” denotes in 2 Chronicles 7:14.

My prayer today:

Lord, help American believers to return to You with all of our hearts, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning. (Based on Joel 2:12)

Thursday’s Prayers for America (1/12/2017)

11160680_10202970551704040_6853963304935390655_n

President Barack Obama said in his first inaugural address: “To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.”

The words, “the wrong side of history,” have been a favorite cliché used often by President Obama, his administration, and the media. The phrase casts contempt on the opposition’s viewpoint and disqualifies its possible merits on the basis of civilization’s inevitable progress from darkness to enlightenment. It is a stinging “conversation stopper,” without any need for making an effective argument. A powerful piece of sound-byte logic. (Excerpt from Common Sense 2016 by Larry Nevenhoven, © 2016, Amazon eBook)

America’s problem right now is not being on the wrong side of history, but being on the wrong side of the Word of God, especially in our nation’s treatment of Israel over the last eight years.

My prayer today:

Lord, help President Trump and his administration to move our nation back to being a staunch ally of Israel so that America will once again enjoy Your blessings. (Based on Genesis 12:3)

Thursday’s Prayers for America (12/8/2016)

Jesus’ plan for bringing forth the Kingdom of God on earth was to train twelve men as His disciples over a three-year timeframe. These twelve disciples were then directed to train others in the same way that they had been trained by Him. Then, the new disciples would train others. And so on and so on.

What was Jesus’ backup plans, just in case His plan A did not work?

He had no backup plans. Plan A had to work!

Did His plan work?

“These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also” (Acts 17:6)

So, after thirty-one years of walking with the Lord –albeit flawed at best – I have realized something this morning. My whole journey was specifically designed to destroy my Plans B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, and so forth; and then resign myself to accepting His Plan A for my life.

My prayer today:

Lord, give us American believers the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of You so that the eyes of our understanding may be enlightened to the hope of Your calling, to the riches of the glory of Your inheritance, and to the exceeding greatness of of Your power toward us who believe in You. (Based on Ephesians 1:17-19)

Tuesday’s Prayers for Asia (12/6/2016)

“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” (Mother Teresa)

On some days , when I don’t feel like fasting for Asia and its 4.4 billion people, Mother Teresa’s words encourage me to continue onward and add my little drop of faith to God’s plans for Asia.

My prayer today:

Lord, use my little drop of fasting to free those who are wrongly imprisoned, to lighten the burden of those who work for You, to let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people in the various nations of Asia. (Based on Isaiah 58:6)

Join with me on Tuesdays to fast and pray for  prisoners in Asia, according to Hebrews 13:3.

Why Asia?

1. 4.4 billion people live in Asia.

2.. 85.4% of world’s unevangelized people live in Asia. (Unevangelized means they may have heard the gospel but have no understanding on how to respond.)

3. The world’s three largest non-Christian religions – Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhists – are based in Asia.

4. Of the 37 countries of the world that are less than 10% Christian, 32 are in Asia. Of the 14 countries, that are less than 2% Christian, 12 are in Asia.

5. 600 million people live in abject poverty in the slums of Asia.

6. 85-90% of unreached people live in Asia. (Unreached means that they have never heard the name of Jesus.) (Operation World: The Definitive Prayer Guide to Every Nation)

Tuesday’s Prayers for Asia (11/22/2016)

Do you need any heavenly rewards?

“And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. (Matthew 6:16-18 NLT)

But why Asia?

1. 4.4 billion people live in Asia.

2.. 85.4% of world’s unevangelized people live in Asia. (Unevangelized means they may have heard the gospel but have no understanding on how to respond.)

3. The world’s three largest non-Christian religions – Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhists – are based in Asia.

6. 85-90% of unreached people live in Asia. (Unreached means that they have never heard the name of Jesus.) (Operation World: The Definitive Prayer Guide to Every Nation)

My prayer today:

Lord, I pray to You, the Lord of the Harvest, to send out laborers into the harvest fields of Asia. (Based on Luke 10:2)

Thursday’s Prayers for America (11/17/20160

A few years ago, I heard a Mike Bickle cassette tape where Bob Jones told about one of his visions. In it, Jones was watching a baseball game between the Lord’s team and Satan’s team. It was the bottom of the ninth with two outs.

Love was at bat and Satan threw his best pitch. Love hit the ball into the outfield for a base hit. “Love never fails.” Faith came to bat and promptly hit a base hit. “Faith works with love.” The next batter was named Godly Wisdom. Satan threw him four straight balls and Godly Wisdom was issued a walk. “Godly wisdom does not fall for Satan’s pitches.” The bases were loaded.

A player named Grace walked into the batter’s box. Jones noted the batter was not much to look at and wondered about his ability to handle the tense situation. Jones also noted Satan’s team relaxed when they saw the weak-looking Grace stepping up to the plate.

Grace swung at the first pitch and Jones said he had never seen a ball hit so hard. Satan’s center fielder, the prince of the air, leaped to catch the ball, but the ball went through his glove, hitting him in the head, and knocking him to the ground. The ball continued its flight over the fence for a grand slam home run. The Lord’s team won.

The Lord turned to Jones and said, “Do you know why Love, Faith, and Godly Wisdom could get on base, but they could not win the game for My team?”

Jones shook his head.

“If your love, your faith, or your wisdom could win the game for you alone, you would think you had done it. Your love, faith, and wisdom can only take you so far, but then you need My grace to bring you home.”

Tuesday’s Prayers for Asia (11/15/2016)

During a prayer conference call for Business Men’s Fellowship in late September of this year, I had a quick vision.

In it, I saw a large passenger jet taking off from a major international airport. As the jet lifted off the ground and began to climb upward, an explosion blasted the jet to pieces, destroying it before it ever reached its cruising altitude.

The vision troubled me, but I didn’t say anything at the time to the other men on the prayer line. I sought the Lord on its meaning and prayed every which way for it not to happen.

Last night, on another prayer conference call, I felt the Lord revealed the vision’s meaning:

Now, whatever our feelings may be about President-elect Donald Trump, I have no doubt the Lord caused or allowed his election to happen at this time in our nation’s history. We can all argue our differing viewpoints, but Scripture states that He removes leaders and sets up other leaders.

As I prayed along with the other men last night, I felt the Lord showed me that one of the main reasons He set Trump in place was to help heal our nation’s relations with Israel. These relations have been severely strained under President Obama’s leadership.

I believe the vision reveals how Satan desires to destroy any efforts by our government to change its present policies toward Israel and the Middle East before they have a chance to be set in place. You see, God wants America to stand with Israel!

We need to pray and fast for America’s partnership and alliance with Israel to take place according to the Lord’s plans.

My prayer today:

Lord, help America and its government to submit to Your will and Your plans for Israel, and therefore to resist Satan and his evil plans to destroy Israel. (Based on James 4:7)

Join with me on Tuesdays to fast and pray for Asia, according to Hebrews 13:3.
