Tuesday’s Prayers for Prisoners (9/6/2016)

David Yonggi Cho, founder of Yoido Full Gospel Church in Seoul, South Korea, has been a powerful influence in my life. It wasn’t because of his teachings, but because of a statement he made in an interview for Charisma Magazine over twenty-five years ago.

The interviewer asked Cho, “Will America ever have a church as large (830,000 members) as Yoida Full Gospel Church?”

“No, I don’t think so,” replied Cho, “because I don’t believe Americans are willing to pay the price in prayer that it would take to build a church like Yoido.”

His words acted as a slap-in-the-face challenge to me and has continued to spur me on over the years.

Cho himself was not converted from Buddhism to Christianity by a powerful church service, but instead, his altar was a bed he laid upon, dying from tubuculosis as seventeen year-old. Each day, a twelve-year old girl stopped by his bedside and read the Book of John to him. The young girl’s words angered Cho, but he was too weak to resist.

Finally, the words of John came to life for Cho who then gave his life to Jesus and was healed.

Now think about this for a moment: One twelve-year old girl touched one life that touched millions of people in Asia and also spawned the cell group movement in the West and America.

My prayer today:

Lord, pour out Your Spirit on millions of children in Asia so that these youths can evangelize billions of people and turn a continent from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to Christ.

Join with me on Tuesdays to fast and pray for prisoners in Asia, according to Hebrews 13:3.

Why Asia?

1. 4.4 billion people live in Asia.

2.. 85.4% of world’s unevangelized people live in Asia. (Unevangelized means they may have heard the gospel but have no understanding on how to respond.)

3. The world’s three largest non-Christian religions – Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhists – are based in Asia.

4. Of the 37 countries of the world that are less than 10% Christian, 32 are in Asia. Of the 14 countries, that are less than 2% Christian, 12 are in Asia.

5. 600 million people live in abject poverty in the slums of Asia.

6. 85-90% of unreached people live in Asia. (Unreached means that they have never heard the name of Jesus.) (Operation World: The Definitive Prayer Guide to Every Nation)

Thursday’s Prayers for America (9/1/2016)

If I stood on a stage in front of 10,000 believers, and said, “I have some answers to help you, your family, your neighbors, and America, are you interested?”

I’d guess that 10,000 believers would say, “Amen, brother.”

If I next said, “Here’s the deal — we’re going to loosen the chains of wickedness on people, unyoke them, set all of the oppressed free, and break every yoke of bondage here in America. Not only that, we’re going to help the hungry, the homeless, and the poorly clothed members of society. And listen to this: people will receive revelations from heaven and many will be healed. Are you still interested?”

I’d guess that 9,500 believers would say, “Amen, brother.”

Then, if I said, “And this is how we will do this, we’ll fast one day a week. Are you still interested?”

I’d guess maybe 10 to 15 people would say, “Amen, brother.”

My prayer today:

Lord, help us American believers to stand once again in Your ways, and to ask You for grace to travel on Your proven paths to victory, and then walk on the paths, not caring about our flesh. (Based on Jeremiah 6:16)

Tuesday’s Prayers for Prisoners (8/30/2016)

If Jesus continues to tarry in His return to earth, we will all die and then appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ. In that appearance, we will receive our legacy (or rewards) from Jesus. What we receive is what we will get for all of eternity. There are no second chances or do overs for us believers.

So, if you’re satisfied, then “pip, pip, cheerio” and continue on your merry way.

But I’m not satisfied.

And even more than that, I fear the Judgment Seat of Christ.

You see, I know I haven’t done enough for the 4.4 billion people of Asia, ninety percent of whom do not know Jesus and forty percent have never heard His name.

What will I answer when Jesus asks, “Larry, why didn’t you do more for Asia? Don’t you love Me?”

I would hate to have those words haunting me over and over throughout eternity.

My prayer today:

Lord, forgive us American believers for our cold love and help us to remember the prisoners held hostage by the kingdom of darkness in Asia as though in prison with them. (Based on Hebrews 13:3)

Thursday’s Prayers for America (8/24/2016)

Recently, the Lord convicted me that my life was filled with lukewarmness. I was wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked. I was a part of the Laodicean Church and didn’t know it.

As you can imagine, this wasn’t one of my finer moments, but I repented and asked to be shown how to change.

The Holy Spirit led me to the Beatitudes:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven;

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted;

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth;

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled;

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy;

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God;

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God;

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. (Matthew 5:3-11)

I believe we Americans need to embrace these verses and learn how to walk in their truths.

My prayer today.

Lord, convict us American believers of our lukewarmness. Show us we need to buy gold from You, that has been refined in the fire, and white garments to cover our nakedness, and eye salve to anoint our eyes so we can see how much we need You. (Based on Revelation 3:18)

Although I pray for the Jews and Gentiles to become the one new man as stated in Ephesians 2:15 on Tuesdays, there’s another revelation to be seen in that verse. It is a template or pattern which can be used for disagreeing groups, such as black and white Americans.

My prayer today:

Lord, I pray that You might create in Yourself one new man in place of black American believers and white american believers, thus making peace between the two races. (Based on Ephesians 2:15)

How many of us can honestly say we’re willing to give up our eternal salvation for the sake of our kinsmen? Willing to go to the eternal Hell in their place? The Apostle Paul wrote —

For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. (Romans 9:3)

Although I felt the Lord wanted me to make a commitment on this verse, I just couldn’t do it. Just the thought of even speaking the words as a prayer to the Lord was too frightening for me. I battled over this verse for months.

Then, one day, the Lord revealed that He loved me so much that He did this for me at the cross. Thus, I knew how Paul could make such a statement. The apostle achieved that same level of love in His walk with the Lord.

My prayer today:

Lord, give us American believers the same love for the Jews You gave Paul when he wished that he could be accursed and cut off from You for the sake of his kinsmen. (Based on Romans 9:3)

“Even if you win the rat race, you will still be a rat.”

God is not wiping his hands, fretting over who will win the presidential election. You see, it’s not Hillary or Donald who has the power to change America, but it is God and God alone.

My prayer today:

Lord, help us American believers to endure the 2016 Presidential Election race by looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith and who is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. (Based on Hebrews 12:1-2)

Thursday’s Prayers for America (8/4/2016)

My most memorable game was the one not played on October 17, 1989.

That particular Tuesday afternoon started out warm and sunny for the third game of the World Series. The newspapers labeled the Series, “The Battle of the Bay,” between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics. Yet all I cared about was that my beloved Giants had lost the first two games and needed a win.

Most nine-year old boys are fidgety bundles of energy and I was no different. My excitement erupted during batting practice.

“Who’s batting now?” I said, nudging Dad in the ribs with my elbow.

Dad faked a deep groan.

“Oh! Mark McGwire.”

CRACK!

“Wow!” I screamed, “Look how far that ball went. It must’ve gone a mile.”

“At least that far,” he said with a smile.

“Jeremiah, honey,” mom whispered in the way mothers always do at the wrong time in a young boy’s life, “you should go to the restroom and eat something before the game starts.”

“Mom, not now. The other Bash Brother will be taking his swings next. I want to see if he hits balls as far as McGwire just did. Please, Mom, please.”

“Jake?” said mom, calling in the heavy artillery to win her point.

Dad sighed and nodded his head.

“Son, as soon as Canseco hits, let’s run to the restroom and grab some food on our way back. Okay, son?”

“But Dad, what about Will Clark and Kevin Mitchell? I don’t want to miss them when the Giants have their batting practice.”

He raised his hands in surrender.

“Sorry son, we’ll have to take our chances. But don’t worry; we won’t miss any of the game. There will be nine innings of action.”

The players lined the first and third baselines when Dad and I arrived back at our seats. The PA announcer introduced the starting lineups for each team.

Then, it happened.

At 5:04 PM, the first tremors hit. A hush devoured the crowd’s enthusiasm. Here and there, I heard people say, “Earthquake!” And, “Lord, help us.”

The initial shaking commenced with rapid tremors and a deep rumble. Great waves of vibrations washed over us. I saw the press box out of the corner of my eye as it swayed back and forth like a palm tree in a hurricane. The electric power then went out and the stadium lights darkened.

I sat frozen in my seat as Dad and mom put their arms around me. But at that instant, I knew they could not protect me from the force causing the earth to shake under our feet. It was too big. Too powerful for Mom and Dad to fight off.

The shaking lasted fifteen seconds and then quit.

The crowd remained calm and quiet. Nobody moved. It was as if the people thought the slightest movement might cause the stadium to collapse on them. The players walked off the field and disappeared into the dugouts.

Minutes later, the umpires canceled the game and the PA announcer ordered the crowd to leave the stadium.

We later learned a 7.1 earthquake had hit San Francisco. The media at first estimated three hundred or more people killed, but this was later reduced to sixty-three. Forty of the fatalities occurred on Interstate I-80 where a double-decker portion of the freeway collapsed, crushing the cars on the lower deck. A section of the Bay Bridge also collapsed.

I sat in the backseat as Dad drove home. It was disappointing the game was not played, but even more than that, I wondered about the power behind the earthquake. Where did it come from?

Mom turned around and looked at me.

“Jeremiah, are you okay?”

“Mom, I’m wondering something.”

“What honey?”

“Where does the power come from that causes an earthquake?”

She thought for a moment.

“God, I guess.”

“God has that kind of power?”

“Yes, honey, He does.”

Even though we attended a Pacific Heights church, it had never dawned on me God had power, especially awesome, earth-shaking power. Power to destroy. Power to kill. Power that could not be harnessed by man.

If God is a God of power, I thought, I’d sure like to remain on His good side. I wouldn’t want Him to ever be mad at me.

Many people have prophesied about a supposed civil war breaking out in Christianity. But what these prophetic voices have failed to see is that the Church has been in a civil war for almost 2000 years between the Jews and Gentile.

My prayer today:

Lord, I pray that You reconcile the Jews and Gentiles both to God in one body through the cross and thereby destroying our hostility against each other. (Based on Ephesians 2:16)

Join with me on Tuesday’s to pray and fast for the one new man to finally come forth in the Body of Christ.

Thursday’s Prayers for America (7/28/2016)

“I don’t believe the race problems between white and black Americans will be settled for years and years, maybe fifty to seventy-five years, if ever,” said a friend during a recent discussion.

“Many years ago, the Lord gave me a vision of a black river coming out of the inner cities of America. The river consisted of black apostles and prophets going to the different parts of America to help free us from the spirit of religion. I still believe in the vision,” I replied.

“Well, you’re seventy years old…”

“Yes, I may be almost twenty-five years older now than when I had the vision, but I believe in it more today than I did back then.”

My prayer today:

Lord, help us believers who have prophetic visions for America not to lose heart so that we will eventually see the goodness of the Lord in our nation. (Based on Psalm 27:13)
