Thursday’s Prayers for America (3/24/2016)

My heart and prayers go out to the suffering people in Brussels right now. May the Lord comfort them and may something good come out of this horrific calamity.

But at the same time, how many warnings do we American believers need before we take the words of 2 Chronicles 7:14 seriously and follow its directions:

  1. Humble ourselves before God…which usually means to fast.
  2. Pray
  3. Seek God
  4. Turn from our wicked ways…which means to repent.

Then, God will hear from heaven, forgive our sins, and heal our land.

My prayer today:

Lord, help us American believers to quit deceiving ourselves so that we become doers of Your word and not just hearers of it. (Based on James 1:22)

Thursday’s Prayers for America (3/17/2016)

“But to truly understand spiritual warfare, you need to remember: Satan was an archangel who understands the government of God. When he rebelled, he became the father of lies and there’s no truth in him. Everything Satan attempts to do is a lying counterfeit of what God does and how God governs.”

The angel glanced at me, making sure I was on the same page with him.

“Satan’s army wears protective armor just like Christians do, but the demonic armor is the exact opposite of God’s armor. Their loins are girded with lies; their breastplates are unrighteousness; their feet are shod with chaos; they have shields of fear; they wear helmets of eternal doom; and their swords are the lying words of Satan. But there is one important similarity common to both God’s army and Satan’s forces. Can you guess what it is?”

I shook my head.

“Unity,” he said. “Both armies’ success depends on unity. God’s army is unified through faith in God and love of God and the brethren. Satan’s forces are unified in their hatred of God and His followers – and – their fear of God, Satan, each other, and bold believers.

Thursday’s Prayers for America (3/10/2016)

As a Christian car salesman at a General Motors/Toyota dealership in Iowa, many of my Christian friends stopped to see me when they were ready to buy a new car. Now, can you guess how many of them purchased new cars from me? None. Zero. Zilch.

The usual scenario would go something like this:

The husband and wife would stop by the dealership. I would show them the cars, they would choose one. I then would give them every possible discount and rebate the dealership would allow me to offer them on a new car. When I asked them if they were ready to sign the order, they invariably said, “We need to pray about this.”

The next day I would see them driving a competitor’s new car.

I would call them up and ask why they bought from my competitor instead of me. The usual answer: “Your competitor beat your deal by $50.”

This happened so often that I sought the Lord in prayer. “Lord, why are You telling my Christian friends to buy from a pagan salesman, rather than from me? Don’t I always pay tithes and offerings on my commissions? What does the pagan salesmen give You?”

In a clear voice, I felt the Lord said to my heart, “They never asked Me and I never told them to buy from your competitor.”

My prayer today:

Lord, I pray that American believers – as they have opportunity – do good to everyone, but especially to those who are of the family of God so that at just the right time they will reap a harvest of blessings. (Based on Galatians 6:9-10)

Thursday’s Prayers for America (2/18/2016)

The movie, We Were Soldiers, stars Mel Gibson, Sam Elliott, and Greg Kennear. It tells the story about a battle, which took place in November 1965, during the Vietnam War.  Some 450 men of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, under the command of Lt. Col. Hal Moore, were dropped by helicopter into a small clearing in the Ia Drang Valley. They were immediately surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers.

In one specific movie scene, the 1st Battalion had been overrun by the North Vietnamese army. Soldiers were fighting in close-quarters, hand-to-hand, brutal fighting. Yet, in the midst of this battle, Joseph Galloway (Barry Pepper) who was a non-combatant newspaper reporter and neutral observer, lay on the ground, trying to protect himself from being killed.

Sergeant Major Basil Plumley (Sam Elliot) walked through the battle zone with a rifle in his hand and stood over Joseph Galloway. “You can’t take any pictures from down there, sonny,” said Plumley.

Galloway looked up. “I’m a non-combatant,” said Galloway.

Plumley tossed him the rifle and Galloway caught it.  “Ain’t no such thing today,” said Plumley as he turned around and walked away.

Galloway began firing the rifle at the enemy soldiers.

Like Galloway, this is where we Christians are in America right now.

My prayer today:

Lord, open the eyes of us American believers, help us to see that we are not waging a war according to the flesh in our nation and to understand that the spiritual weapons that You have supplied us have divine power to destroy strongholds. But we have to use them now if we want to make a difference! (Based on 2 Corinthians 10:3-4)

Tuesday’s Prayers for Prisoners (2/16/2016)

Just when I think that I have China’s amazing Christian growth somewhat figured out, God throws a curveball into the mix. Who would have ever guessed that China’s state-controlled Three-Self Churches would undergo revival?

It wasn’t too long ago that I read Brother Andrew’s book, God’s Smuggler, for the first time and learned about the Three-Self Churches. All sermons were vetted by Communist leaders before pastors could preach them. No young people were allowed to attend services. So, only older people attended the services. Christians who met in underground churches, outside of the state-controlled Three-Self Churches, were branded outlaws.

Thus, the explosive Christian growth in China was through the heavily persecuted underground churches.

And now a revival is taking place in Three-Self Churches.

It sort of reminds me of the Charismatic Movement in the Roman Catholic Church which began at Notre Dame University and Duquesne University in 1967. The Pentecostals and other Charismatics were amazed that God’s Spirit could possibly enter Cathedrals and local parishes because they believed the buildings were religious deserts filled with pagans.

Yet, God moved and redeemed Catholics, not paying attention to our close-minded attitudes.

My prayer today:

Lord, forgive me for not believing that all things are possible with You. Therefore, I pray that you move camels through the eyes of needles in China and do other mind-blowing wonders which will cause us to be astonished at the depth of Your love for mankind. (Based on Mark 10:25-27)

Thursday’s Prayers for America (2/11/2016)

I felt the Lord whisper to my heart: “My church is a bunch of nice losers. They lay their hands on the sick and pray for them, but when they die, they aren’t mad at all. They don’t check themselves out to see what happened or what went wrong with their prayers and actions. They accept defeats and don’t think anymore about them.

“Now, Major League baseball teams are all filled with good players. Each player has to be one of the best in the world to make it to the Major Leagues. Losing teams have good players on their rosters, too. But after a while, losing teams’ players don’t mind losing because after all, they still receive their Major League paychecks and bonuses.

“But winning Major League baseball teams are different. They hate losing and will do anything and whatever it takes to win. They hate losing.

“I want My church to hate losing!”

This time the grief, which hit me, measured a ten on the Richter Scale. It was so bad my sister leaned toward me.

“Don’t you think you should go outside and get a hold of yourself,” she whispered.

If I had attempted to move, I would have fallen on the floor. Everything would have erupted out of me, making a bad situation much worse than it was. The grief lifted after a few minutes, but I sat on pins and needles for the rest of the funeral service.

My prayer today:

Lord, help us American believers to do all things for the sake of the Gospel so we may partake of its blessings. Help us to run the race with purpose in every step and to fight, not as mere shadowboxers who only beat the air. Show us how to win and to hate losing. (Based on 1 Corinthians 9:23-26)

Short Story: “A Day Late And A Dollar Short” (Part 1)

canstockphoto8794144

If you are reading this, then I’m dead and will forever remain sixty-six years old.

If you are a searcher, looking through the rubble for survivors or their remains, thanks for trying. I appreciate your efforts. If you are a looter who picked up my MacBook Air because you wanted it, consider the laptop a gift from me. I won’t need it anymore. But whatever your reasons, it makes no difference because I’m dead and just glad someone is reading my story.

Oh yeah, my name is Jackson Edwards.

Maybe I better get on with it because I’m drifting off more and more because of the pain.

It all began when my doorbell rang a few months ago.

Ding. Dong.

I hit pause on the TV remote and stood up. My sciatica and arthritis ached more than usual so I stretched myself, hoping to work out the kinks, before reaching for the doorknob. Halloween had passed two weeks earlier, but I still took no chances and looked through the peephole first. I saw my bearded neighbor standing in the hallway and opened the door.

“Monsieur Roberto,” I said with a lousy French accent.

“Si vou ples, Monsieur Jackson,” he said in his own second rate accent, pointing toward the living room.

“Come in, my Charismaniac friend.”

He laughed and walked into the living room and sat down on the sectional. I followed and sat on the opposite side of the coffee table in the leather recliner.

“I don’t know where to begin,” he said, rubbing his hands together.

His blue eyes checked out the oak floor that his jogging shoes rested upon. Something bothered him.

“What’s wrong?” I asked. “Don’t you usually start with John 3:16 and work your way through the rest of the Bible when you come here?”

“Hey, man, I’m sorry if I’ve ever whacked you over the head with my Bible.”

“Just yanking your chain, Dr. Bob.”

He sighed.

“Okay, but I still don’t know where to start.”

“Why not at the beginning? It’s only 7 p.m. and we have all night.”

He nodded and rubbed his forehead with a hand.

“Do you remember four years ago when I told you about a vision a Christian woman had about a gigantic ocean wave hitting Japan? Do you remember that?”

“Vaguely,” I whispered, not being totally honest because I remembered the story quite well. In fact, I even did research on Google and discovered numerous other warnings spoken ahead of time about the tsunami.

“Okay,” he said. “Well, this same woman just had a vision of a nuclear blast hitting us here in San Francisco ─”

“Really?”

“Yes, and not only that, a prophet friend from Albuquerque called and told us a disaster would soon hit the Bay Area. He recommended we should pack up and leave now.”

“Hmm,” I said, leaning forward in the recliner. “What are you going to do?”

“Mary and I sold our condo today, furniture and all. We’re moving to an area near Tahoe.”

“What about your medical practice? And your two kids”

“My two partners bought out my share and we’ll homeschool our kids.”

Everything moved too fast to grab a hold of what he was telling me.

“Well, it’ll take sixty days or so for everything to close, right? So, we’ll have plenty of time to talk in the future.”

I stood up, hoping to end this uncomfortable conversation.

“No, sadly, we won’t. I made cash deals and sold everything for sixty cents on the dollar.”

I fell backwards into the recliner and shook my head.

“You took a four hundred thousand dollar loss on your condo?”

“I would have given it away if I had to.”

I opened my mouth and closed it. How do you challenge a person who is willing to turn his back on a fabulous way of life in the city he loved? I know I could never have done it. It had been too hard building a forty-year career in Silicon Valley to end up tossing it away. And a million dollar condo on Nob Hill? That would have been a laughable goal back in the days of my youth, living in the inner city of Oakland.

“Is this goodbye?” I asked.

He nodded and stood up, offering his hand to me. I stood and shook hands with him.

“Listen, Jackson, why don’t you come along with us? Mary and I really feel some bad things are going to happen in San Francisco and we don’t want anything to happen to you. We love you.”

“No way, I’ll take my chances here on Nob Hill,” I said, shaking my head. I winked my eye and added, “Just remember, my white Charismaniac friend, I’m still one of them jive-talking, hustle-or-die blacks from the inner city. We know how to survive.”

Bob turned and left. I never saw him again.

Dr. Bob’s declaration upset me so much I immediately rushed into the kitchen and made myself a cup of black tea. Coffee was my morning slap in the face, but tea was my meditative brew of choice. My former wife, an English gal from Liverpool, taught me this ritual in our four years of marriage.

“Jackson, you need a cuppa now,” she proclaimed whenever she noticed my neck muscles tightening.

I miss her, I thought, carrying my tea and a shortbread cookie into the living room. Too bad she wanted children. Oh well, women have never been hard to find for an ex-Stanford athlete like me. This time I just need to focus my 160 IQ on the right one.

I sat down in the recliner and sipped some tea.

Ring.

I looked at my cell phone and knew the call could not be ducked.

“Hi Mama.”

“Jackson, I missed you Sunday. Where were you?”

“Sorry Mama, I had a project.”

“On Sunday?”

“I was stuck with a Monday morning deadline.”

“Honey, I’m eighty-six years old and need some time with you, too. I won’t live forever, you know?”

“I know, I know. Maybe next Sunday, okay?”

Dead air space on the phone with Mama meant churning wheels inside her brain.

“Jackson –”

“Yes, Mama?” I replied, gritting my teeth.

“What’s wrong with you?”

“Nothing, Mama.”

“Don’t lie. Your mama always knows when something is wrong with you.”

I blew out a breath and then told her about Dr. Bob’s visit and his nuclear bomb revelation.

“Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!”

“You can say that again, Mama.”

“You need to return to church, son.”

“Mama, you know I’m not into that right now.”

“It’s time to put an end to that silly nonsense of yours,” she said. “Did you know Father Kerry has returned to St. Edwards?”

“Father Kerry, huh? I was an altar boy for him over fifty years ago.”

“He asked about you Sunday. Why don’t you give him a call?”

“Mama, please.”

“Okay, Jackson, but the church is the answer for your nuclear bomb worries.”

The conversation soon sailed into safer waters and focused on my two brothers and their families. My tea was cold when the call ended so I went to bed.

Thursday’s Prayers for America (2/4/2016)

In August 70 A.D., the Roman army under the command of General Titus, destroyed Jerusalem. Josephus stated that over one million Jews were slaughtered, most of them were unarmed citizens, and killed wherever they were caught. Pregnant women had their stomachs slashed open and their babies smashed against stones. Hundreds of Jews were burnt to death on the roof of the Temple as they cried out to God.

Where was God? Why didn’t He do something?

If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now, they have been hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you on every side, and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation. (Luke 19:42-44)

Almost forty years earlier, Jesus prophesied this exact event.

Then, in 66 or 67 A.D., a Christian prophesied to the Jerusalem Church. The prophecy reminded the believers of the prophecy by Jesus, warned of the soon destruction of Jerusalem, and advised every believer to pull up roots and leave.

By 69 A.D.,  every member of the Jerusalem Church heeded the prophecy and relocated to Pella (a city sixty miles northeast of Jerusalem) and other Transjordan cities. The Christian population was approximately one third of the population of Jerusalem.

Put on your thinking caps for a moment, okay?

These Christians were Jewish believers and loved their Jewish neighbors. They would have told their neighbors about the prophecies. As they left the city with their goods, everyone would have pointed at them and said, “They’re obeying the prophecies!”

This happened over and over again for nearly two years. It was a big deal! And a constant reminder to the people who stayed in Jerusalem.

Yet, even though the Lord was longsuffering and warned His people, most refused to listen to Him.

Now, fast forward to America of today.

I believe we will soon see the Lord warn His people in certain cities, telling them to leave, just like He did before the fall of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. We need to obey His words and follow His commands, without considering the material consequences of our obedience. Just go!

It may save our lives and will be a sign to the people who choose to stay.

My prayer today:

Lord, give us American believers ears to hear what the Spirit says to the churches so that we will be overcomers and eat from the tree of life. (Based on Revelation 2:7)

Thursday’s Prayers for America (1/14/2016)

The maturity level of most American believers is so shallow that if one describes 911 or Katrina as possible judgments of the Lord, we become offended and are quick to lash out with our tongues. “How dare you say something like that! Who do you think you are? A prophet? If so, you’re a false one,” we shout in unison.

The tumult continues until the person who has voiced such ridiculous beliefs is cowed back into his little box or his reputation shredded to pieces. This is what happened to Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson when they voiced their beliefs about 911.

What does the Bible state?

Is a trumpet blown in a city, and the people are not afraid? Does disaster come to a city unless the Lord has done it? (Amos 3:6)

We believers declare the Lord as the sovereign King over America, but when a 911 or a Katrina occurs, we quickly wrestle the divine scepter out of His grasp and place it in the hands of someone else.

But why do we assume the Lord, who is also our Judge, would not chastise America? Didn’t He use enemies and calamities to chastise Israel all throughout the Old Testament? Shouldn’t we expect to be treated the same as God’s chosen people?

Our immaturity resembles that of Jerusalem and Judah when Jeremiah prophesied to them −

Why then has this people slidden back, Jerusalem, in a perpetual backsliding? They hold fast to deceit, they refuse to return. I listened and heard, but they did not speak aright, no man repented of his wickedness, saying, “What have I done?” Everyone turned to his own course, as the horse rushes into battle. Even the stork in the heavens knows her appointed times; and the turtledove, the swift, and the swallow observe the time of their coming. But My people do not know the judgment of the Lord. (Jeremiah 8:5-7 NKJ)

Maybe it’s time for us to grow up before it’s too late.

(The preface from Common Sense 2016 by Larry Nevenhoven, ©2016, Amazon eBook)

Sneak Peak into “Common Sense 2016″…Also Known as the Obama Connection

Common Sense cover

It takes a few days before the “Look inside ↓” feature works on a newly published eBook. So, here’s a little glimpse into Chapter 4:

President Barack Obama said in his first inaugural address: “To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.” (43)

The words, “the wrong side of history,” have been a favorite cliché used often by President Obama, his administration, and the media. The phrase casts contempt on the opposition’s viewpoint and disqualifies its possible merits on the basis of civilization’s inevitable progress from darkness to enlightenment. It is a stinging “conversation stopper,” without any need for making an effective argument. A powerful piece of sound-byte logic. (44)

But what is the definitive standard, which President Obama or any politician uses, to determine who is on the wrong or right side of history? Intellectual insight? Public opinion? Scientific analysis? Computer models? What?

With one reliable exception, there are no definitive standards for foretelling the future with any degree of certainty or even how future historians will view our present day political decisions. History zigs and zags all over the pages of time. It seldom travels on a straight line from point A to point B. And historians? Scholars examine the past from numerous angles and through various microscopes without much scientific method involved in their analysis. Their judgments could just as easily be based on vagaries, quirks, and fads, rather than quantifiable facts. To think otherwise is foolish.

The one reliable exception is the Bible, which has proven itself accurate in foretelling the future for thousands of years. The Bible’s accuracy depends solely on one steadfast fact: the omniscience of God.

Since the Bible is our only reliable definitive standard, we need to check where America stands right now through the eyes of the only historian who really counts: the Ancient of Days. (45)

It is my firm belief that America is now under the Judgment of God and has been for more than forty-five years. This is due in major part to our lies and betrayal of South Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos during the Vietnam War, which resulted in the slaughter of more than three million innocent Vietnamese, Cambodians, and Laotians. (See Appendix A)

Yes, I realize many Christians may disagree with my views. Most are gazing at the horizon for signs of a future Judgment of God heading our direction, rather than thinking America has already fallen under His judgment. I believe they have been looking through rose-colored glasses and not correctly discerning the signs of our times.

In my eBook, New Wind Blowing, I describe how America’s urban woes, unemployment, abortion, confused leaders, droughts, illegal aliens, debt, and Islamic terrorism are curses linked to our national sins against God. And that these curses are a part of God’s judgment for disobeying His commandments. (See Appendix B)

I also relate in New Wind Blowing my belief that the 2008 Presidential Election was a plumb line event in which the Lord checked how our nation stood with Him. We sadly chose prosperity over posterity and the Judge signed America’s death warrant. (See Appendix C)

Do I believe we can throw ourselves on 2 Chronicles 7:14 and God will then heal America? I had slim hopes of this ever happening when I wrote New Wind Blowing. (See Appendix D)

But now, because of President Barack Obama, I have even less hope the Lord can heal all of America through a genuine repentance by believers. My guess is that our chances are about equal to King David’s odds of saving his child after the prophet Nathan prophesied the child’s death. (46)

So Manasseh seduced Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to do more evil than the nations whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel. (2 Chronicles 33:9 NKJ)

King Manasseh was the worst king in the history of Judah. His leadership example and executive sins moved Judah from the godly reforms of his father, King Hezekiah, into iniquity and rebellion. Even though Manasseh repented late in his fifty-five year reign, his contrition could not reverse the national damage caused by his sins. The Lord had already made up His mind about Judah and said to His prophet −

“Even if Moses and Samuel stood before Me, yet My mind could not be favorable toward this people. Cast them out of My sight, and let them go forth.” (Jeremiah 15:1 NKJ)

Jerusalem fell in 586 BC and the Jews were carried off into exile to Babylon. All of this came about because of King Manasseh’s sins.

Is President Obama America’s King Manasseh?

If so, it will not be so much for his stances on abortion and same-sex marriages because these sins were set in motion by other politicians before he became President in 2008. Therefore, what is President Obama’s major stumbling block?

It is his “wrong side of history” stance on Israel.
