Learning How to Pray Effectively in 59 Seconds or Less (Part 11)

IMG_0011

Friday, I prayed for the nation of Somalia. I had never studied or heard much about the nation before that day, except for reading a little bit about the Somalia pirates. So, even though I wrote a general prayer for Somalia in my article, this was not really how I prayed for the nation.

What I actually did was bow my knees on the floor and prayed: “Lord, give us Somalia.”

Then, a tremendous sorrow fell upon me. I wept, travailed, groaned, and grunted before the Lord for Somalia. It resonated all through me how much the Lord loved the nation and its people. I was overwhelmed by His desire to turn the nation from the power of Satan to Him and His ways. My heart was broken for Somalia.

To be honest, I have not had that type of passion in my prayers for years and years. In fact, it had been gone so long, I wondered if I would ever have it again. The reasons for losing my passion?  I am sure it revolved around apathy and compromise on my part.

But I am determined not to lose my passion again and now pray the following prayer for myself and others:

Lord, help me to never be slothful in zeal, to be always red-hot and fervent in spirit, so I can serve You Lord without apathy and compromise. (Based on Romans 12:11)

Prayers without fervent passion hinder the effectiveness of our prayers.

What are other hindrances?

If We’re All Created in God’s Image, Why Must Gays Change? (Conclusion)

DSCF0641

So, I repeat: was John Paulk correct when he said, “We [gays] are not broken, damaged, inferior or throwaways. We are created in the image of God—just like everyone else?”

First, are gays created in the image of God, just like everyone else?

Before our salvations, gays and straights alike are created in the image of God in that we can think, make decisions, have emotions, can love and interact with others, have creative ideas, can even create life through procreation, and are eternal beings.

But because of Adam’s fall, unredeemed humans can not readily converse with God or walk with Him, like Adam did in the Garden of Eden. We are separated from the life of God and will remain that way unless we are redeemed by the Lord Jesus Christ.

At salvation, gays and straights alike are redeemed and then can enjoy the life of God living in and through them.

Are all gays broken, damaged, inferior or throwaways?

Yes, they are, but so are straights. We all have to be changed into the image of Christ after our salvations. We all have to put off our old selves, have our minds renewed, and put on our new selves, created in the likeness of God.

Plus, we all, with the help of the Holy Spirit, have to put to death our sins and desires of the flesh, which are hostile and not pleasing to God. The sins of the flesh include sexual immorality, idolatry, adultery, homosexuality, and so forth.

What if a gay gives his life to Christ, but stays in his gay lifestyle?

I believe his salvation is eternally secure through grace, but there are at least two scriptures which will haunt him at the Judgment Seat of Christ:

For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. (Mark 8:38)

So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. (Matthew 5:19)

Thus, why must gays change after accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior?

So, they don’t feel the shame of Christ when they meet Him in His glory and are not considered the least throughout eternity.

We straights have to change, too.

Thus, let’s all repent and change today.

Tuesday’s Prayers for America (9/9/2014)

Untergang der Titanic ("Sinking of the Titanic") by Willy Stöwer, 1912

Untergang der Titanic (“Sinking of the Titanic”) by Willy Stöwer, 1912

If today’s Christians had manned the lifeboats at the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, they would have joined hands in a prayer meeting and prayed 2 Chronicles 7:14, hoping the ship would rise from the depths of the sea. So, they could return to the comforts and good times aboard the luxurious ship.

But the Titanic’s pride in its size and supposed unsinkability,  its bad leadership, and poor planning sent the ship to its doom in the North Atlantic waters in less than three hours. Two thirds of the ship’s passengers and crew perished on that night.

Hello! Wake up! Yahoo! We have the same problems in America today.

And I am not talking about our government’s leaders in Washington, D. C. or at the state and local levels. I am referring to our supposed spiritual leaders and to ourselves. We are looking in our rearview mirrors and not seeing what’s heading toward us.

We need to drop everything and seek the Lord.

Today, I prayed:

Lord, I pray that we Americans who are members of the Laodicean church will open our ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to our churches. (Based on Revelation 3:22)

What do you think and has the Lord spoken to you today?

Join with me on Tuesdays to fast and pray for America.

Learning How to Pray Effectively in 59 Seconds or Less (Part 10)

IMG_0011

Two men stood in the Temple praying.

The one had a wide metal box looped around his arm with a leather strap and also had extra long fringes on the edge of his cloak. He was fasted up, tithed up, prayed up, studied up, dressed up, and belonged to the religious party, which many recognized as the “Hope of Israel.” He was a Pharisee.

The other man was considered the scum of Israel and a turncoat who had committed treason by conniving with Rome to rip off God’s people: the Jews. He was a tax collector.

It would have been only natural for the Pharisee to look around and notice the tax collector. He opened his mouth and prayed:

“I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else. For I don’t cheat, I don’t sin, and I don’t commit adultery. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! (Luke 18:11 NLT)

At the same time, it would have been perfectly normal for the tax collector to notice the Pharisee. He knew the Pharisees followed the Law and the Tradition of the Elders to the nth degree, and also knew what everyone said about tax collectors. So, he prayed with his head bowed down and beat his chest with sorrow:

‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ (Luke 23:13 NLT)

Jesus taught this happening as a parable and said:

I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luke 23:14 NLT)

Okay, okay, I’m guilty.

I can’t say that I have ever compared myself to tax collectors, but I sure have compared myself to Baptists, Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians, Pentecostals, Charismatics, Messianic believers, Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons, and everyone who doesn’t agree with me on all of my personal doctrines.

Do you know what sin I have committed when I compare myself to others? Pride.

Pride leads to disgrace… (Proverbs 11:2 NLT)

I often ask the Holy Spirit to search my heart for pride. It doesn’t take much for it to sneak into my life and ruin my prayers…maybe yours, too.

What are other hindrances?

If We’re All Created in God’s Image, Why Must Gays Change? (Part 6)

DSCF0641

What must gays, like John Paulk, do to be saved?

Actually, they have to do the same thing everyone else has to do.

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. (Romans 10:9-10)

As many have said over the years: “Grace plus faith plus nothing equals salvation.  Period.

The Lord has no special scriptural requirements about changing our life styles, confessing our sins, cleaning ourselves up, studying scripture, or anything so that we are readied to be saved. We just come as we are to Him. It’s His free gift, which is offered to all of mankind.

Okay! Okay! There’s a little more, but even that is done by Him.

No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. (John 6:44)

Think of this: the Father draws us by His Spirit to His Son for eternal salvation. By His omniscience, the Father saw us on our worst days committing our worst sins, and yet He wanted us to be His children.

Thus, this means the Father saw gays giving their lives to the Lord and then some of them still continuing in their gay lifestyles. Yet, the Father still chose to draw them to His Son for eternal salvation.

Grace is mind-blowing stuff, right? And thank God for that!

So, I repeat: was John Paulk correct when he said, “We [gays] are not broken, damaged, inferior or throwaways. We are created in the image of God—just like everyone else?”

Chapter 44: No Longer A Slumdog

the hunt for larry who 33

In 1995, Janelle told me about K. P. Yohannan and his ministry, Gospel for Asia. She loaned me a book, Revolution in World Missions by Yohannan, which I quickly forgot about until New Year’s Day, 1996. Since I had nowhere to go on that holiday and no TV to watch football bowl games, I hunkered down and read the book.

Yohannan wrote in one part how overwhelmed he felt by the size of India and his meager resources. He cried out to the Lord and eventually the Lord spoke the following to his heart:

“I am not in any trouble that I need someone to beg for Me. I made no promises I will not keep to you. It is not the largeness of the work that matters, but only doing what I command. All I ask of you is that you be a servant. For all who join with you in the work, it will be a privilege − a light burden for them.” (Revolution in World Missions by K. P. Yohannan)

The Lord’s response so blessed me that I wrote the words in my Bible. Although Carol and I began sponsoring a GFA missionary in 2006, I paid little attention to the ministry, except for a few glances at the words written in my Bible.

Fast forward until 2011 when we received a free copy in the mail of No Longer A Slumdog by K. P. Yohannan. The title caught my attention because of the movie by a similar name. I sat down and began reading it. I wept often and asked forgiveness again and again of the Lord as the book uncovered my selfishness.

There were stories about Muttu, Asha, Lata, Vichy, Tusli, and other names of poor children I couldn’t pronounce. I read about a mother who sold her baby for ten pounds of rice. I learned about India’s caste system and how the lowest rung, the Dalits, comprise twenty percent of India’s population or nearly 300 million people. The Dalits are considered subhuman, worthy of being treated like dogs.

Every word acted like a rock thrown against my plastic Western Christianity, creating cracks in it. Yet, it was this specific sentence on Page 31, which penetrated my heart:

“In India alone, there are 11 million children like Asha who have been abandoned, and 90% of them are girls.” (Revolution in Missions by K. P. Yohannan)

All I could think about were the 9.9 million abandoned little girls. If I closed my eyes, I saw little children, but their faces resembled my daughter, Susan, when she was four years old. I could not ignore my heart this time.

My wife and I now sponsor six children in Gospel For Asia’s Bridge of Hope program. I am a volunteer advocate for Bridge of Hope, a Gospel For Asia blogger, and a member of their prayer team.

In the foreword to No Longer A Slumdog, Francis Chan wrote:

“I am very thankful for the book you are about to read. It has stirred my heart once again. Living in the West with all of its influences, it is easy to forget about others…”

I recommend this book to everyone, and who knows? It may change your life, too.

(The above is Chapter 44 from my memoir: The Hunt for Larry Who)

Tuesday’s Prayers for America ((9/2/2014)

dolly 13

Solomon’s temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BC. The Jews were either killed or carried off into captivity to Babylonia.

The Jewish exiles than returned under Ezra and Nehemiah in 537 BC to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and to begin building a new temple, which was labeled Zerubbabel’s temple. This temple was completed and dedicated in 515 BC.

Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes? Haggai 2:3)

The older Jews who remembered Solomon’s glorious temple wept with a loud voice when they looked at Zerubbabel’s much smaller and more ordinary temple.

Yet, the Lord said, “The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the former…”

Today, I prayed:

Lord, help us American believers to quickly forget what lies behind us in our nation and to reach forward to what lies ahead. So that we continually press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ, never weeping over our yesterdays and embracing You as our Ancient of Days each moment of our lives. (Based on Philippians 3:13-14 and Daniel 7:22)

What do you think and has the Lord spoken to you today?

Join with me on Tuesdays to fast and pray for America.

Learning How to Pray Effectively in 59 Seconds or Less (Part 9)

IMG_0011

Charlie Peace was a criminal. Laws of God or man curbed him not. Finally the law caught up with him, and he was condemned to death. On the fatal morning in Armley Jail, Leeds, England, he was taken on the death-walk. Before him went the prison chaplain, routinely and sleepily reading some Bible verses.

The criminal touched the preacher and asked what he was reading. “The Consolations of Religion,” was the reply.

Charlie Peace was shocked at the way he professionally read about hell. Could a man be so unmoved under the very shadow of the scaffold as to lead a fellow-human there and yet, dry-eyed, read of a pit that has no bottom into which this fellow must fall? Could this preacher believe the words that there is an eternal fire that never consumes its victims, and yet slide over the phrase without a tremor? Is a man human at all who can say with no tears, “You will be eternally dying and yet never know the relief that death brings”? All this was too much for Charlie Peace. So he preached. Listen to his on-the-eve-of-hell sermon:

“Sir,” addressing the preacher, “if I believed what you and the church of God say that you believe, even if England were covered with broken glass from coast to coast, I would walk over it, if need be, on hands and knees and think it worthwhile living, just to save one soul from an eternal hell like that! (Why Revival Tarries, Leonard Ravenhill, p. 32)

Like the prison chaplain, we American believers are hindered by our own apathy. Oh yes! We may toss a few prayer darts toward heaven for our children and family, but that’s about it. Our neighbors, friends, fellow citizens, people in foreign nations− they’re on their own. God helps those who help themselves, right?

Even though we are under grace, there are spiritual laws. One of them is:

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. (Galatians 6:7)

In the years ahead, when tough times slam America, we will each reap what we sow. If we have sown prayerlessness and apathy, we will reap the same in our desperate hours of need. But if we have been zealous and prayed for others, we will reap the prayers of many when we need them the most.

Make up your mind what you want to reap in the future now.

What are other hindrances?

Friday’s Prayers for Prisoners (8/8/2014)

gospel-for-asia-RT13-00124

First, I listened to a radio program a few years ago when a former Army Sergeant talked about IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) in the Iraqi War. The IEDs were planted on roads and then usually set off by a cellphone when a Humvee drove over them. IEDs killed hundreds of American soldiers during the war.

“I can tell you how to stop IEDs,” said an Iraqi to the Sergeant.

“Really? How?”

“All you have to do is tie an Iraqi kid to the grill of each Humvee. IEDs will no longer be a problem for you.”

The Sergeant shook his head. “That won’t work. We won’t fight like that.”

“Sadly, IEDs will continue to be a problem for you,” said the Iraqi citizen.

Then, last week’s Inside Israel had an eye-opening testimony from a wounded Israeli soldier in the Gaza conflict:

“We went into Shuja’iya, to discover and destroy the Hamas’terrorist tunnels…The Hamas fighters started sending towards us 13- and 14-year-old Palestinian children, running at us, wearing explosive-laden suicide-bomber belts. Those children were death-trapped, and became human bombs…We were trained to fight adult soldiers or any other skilled adults, enabling us to defend our families and countrymen.  But this?  We had no other option but, in self-defense, to shoot them at as far a range from us as we could, before the adult that sent them used his mobile phone to detonate the belts, and kill us.”

Whoa Nellie! We don’t think like they do.

This has been coming to me over and over again over the last few weeks about how we believers don’t think like our enemies think. And because of that, we Americans are prisoners of the kingdom of darkness. Hey! We’re at war, with lives at stake. How we pray and act may determine what happens in our cities and regions in the near future.

But first of all, we need to change our thinking.

Today, I prayed:

Lord, help us American believers in our battle against the kingdom of darkness so that Satan does not outsmart us. Help us, Lord, to be familiar with Satan’s plans and schemes. (Based on 2 Corinthians 2:11)

What do you think and has the Lord talked to you today?

Join with me on Fridays to fast and pray for prisoners, according to Hebrews 13:3.

Tuesday’s Prayers for America (8/6/2014)

Dolly who

A few years ago, a young girl asked me to pray for a miracle for her. She had just graduated from high school and wanted to attend college, but lacked the funds to do so. Her parents were divorced. She lived with her mother, but her father was a deadbeat and would not help with finances at all. She mentioned her upcoming graduation party.

“Will your dad be invited to your party?” I asked.

“No,” she replied, “I try not to be around him at all.”

“If you want a miracle from God, you need to find ways to honor your father.”

I opened my Bible and read:

“Honor your father and mother (this is the first commandment with a promise), that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” (Ephesians 6:2-3)

She struggled with what I advised her to do, but ended up inviting her dad to the graduation party.

The end result: a few weeks later, a new scholarship fund chose her as the lone recipient. She received her miracle from God.

Today, I prayed:

Lord, help us Americans to honor Your word so that it is a lamp for our feet and a light for our paths; and so that we believers are no longer taken captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. (Based on Psalm 119:105 and Colossians 2:8)

What do you think and has the Lord spoken to you today?

Join with me on Tuesdays to fast and pray for America.
